We hit up the apple orchard last weekend. What are your favorite activities in the brisk (rainy here) autumn air?

My favorite fall activity is keeping track of the Arizona Fall League!
Glendale lost to the Scottsdale Scorpions 8-7 in ten innings. Kala'i Rosario was 0-for-4. Andrew Cossetti was 0-for-4. No Twins pitchers got in the game.
Finally did the long overdue system upgrade for the WGOM last night and the site was not happy about it. We have a number of old plugins that used now removed PHP functionality so it took some time to fix and re-enable each plugin. The sidebar will be missing for a while until I rewrite it because it's the largest and one of the oldest.
Thanks for doing this work!

Yeoman's work, citizen. A sincere tip of the hat to you.
Y’all. Been a tough couple weeks with my fil. He’s in bad shape. Has been in bad shape for a long time now. The story is too long and too depressing to get into, but the end result is that he lives alone in the woods (around a large lake in the center of the state) and is into capable for caring for himself. He has in home health assistance, folks who help cook, clean, and make sure he’s not dead, and a very dedicated nurse who has gone above and beyond to care for him. His son, a real piece of work, has thus far refused to help because he can’t get time off and has been calling dr. Chop asking her to fly to mn to deal with the situation because she’s “so much better at dealing with stuff like this”. Ugh.
The question, he needs to be in an assisted living facility or nursing home but is too obstinate and defiant to hear it. Do any of you have experience getting a relative into assisted living? He’s got VA benefits, medicaid and disability. Any advice would be helpful.
Oof. I feel for you and Dr. Chop.
No advice to offer, unfortunately.
I'm currently at the Northwoods homestead, trying to help them sort through shit (dump/donate/move to Bloomington).
It is a painful and slow process. He thinks almost all of their furniture should be donated, but some is 50-year old junk. They are too far for Salvation Army to come pick it up, which means I have to wait for my brother and nephew to come up with a truck and trailer. (It would be much easier with a rental moving van, but my brother insists on driving up with a trailer, which will be a PITA to load).
My dad has multiple, large tools as well. Brother is apparently taking the radial arm saw, but not the planer or drill press. Because he's too cheap to get a 220v line installed in his garage.... 🤷♂️
Anyhoo, we need to get rid of a dresser with mirror, two other dressers, three desks, two bookcases, and at least one bed frame, box springs and mattress. Plus a lot of clothes, some books, dishes, pots and pans.
Oh, and three cameras: a Polaroid Automatic 350 Land Camera (with original box and a Polaroid Flashgun #268), Brownie Star flex camera with flash attachment, and a Kodak Pony I35 Model B camera with case and light meter.
Give me a price on the cameras, my daughter collects them.
And if she doesn’t want them I know of a good home.
My nephew's wife has first dibs. If she's a no, I will get back to y'all.
I could probably talk you through the ultimate legal process, if it came down to that, but that's a last resort. No advice beyond that, other than best wishes. But if you want the gaurdianship/conservatorship 411, drop me a line.
The way we got my dad into a nursing home is that he had to be hospitalized, and the doctor didn't give him a choice. That way, the doctor got to be the bad guy and not me. That may not be any help in your situation, though.
CoC may be able to help on the VA benefits. The psychological side is difficult to deal with. I knew a guy that went through $20k/month in at-home care because he refused to leave his house. His kids were having to sell his cars, boat, etc.
If he’s amenable to Dr. Chop checking to make sure all’s well on the VA side of things (and to ensure she’s NOK contact), it’d be good to contact his County Veterans Service Officer. Once Dr. Chop is on the books as his responsible party, she should be able to help make sure he’s as squared always as he can be.
Minnesota’s Department of Veterans Affairs operates five Veterans Homes; sometimes living amongst other vets can help ease the transition from at-home life to living somewhere with more support. (I’m weighing whether this is my own preferred route for care before my hopefully distant, yet inevitable, dirt nap.)
I wish I had more (& more helpful) advice.
The CVSO idea is excellent.
My wife and I will be descending upon the St. Paul area on Friday next weekend. We are meeting another couple on that Saturday for dinner at Apostle and then we catch the Wild game. Anything fun going on Friday night down there?
