I have a couple of shows I listen to: The Leadoff Spot on MLB Network Radio (Steve Phillips, Eduardo Perez, Xavier Scruggs) and the SiriusXM Blitz (Bruce Murray, Rich Gannon, Kirk Morrison, Alex Smith). Neither of them is a shoutfest or a hot take party.
Estrellas' losing streak went to three, as they fell to Escogido 6-1. Lewin Diaz was 2-for-4. Johnny Cueto started and pitched 2.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks. Estrellas is now tied for first with Licey in the round-robin playoff, with a record of 8-4. There appear to be six games remaining.
Only thing sports related I listen to is the Poscast and Effectively Wild, but even that's decreasing over time. Well, and WGOM radio!
I suppose it qualifies, but I don’t think of Effectively Wild as sports talk. I think I associate the genre with football fans grudgingly acknowledging baseball for two months until they can shout about training camp. I find myself wishing more of my non-sports podcasts were as thoughtful & amusing as EW.
Or the WGOMPTHPB!
btw, I pronounce that W G O M *raspberry*
When I get a new podcast recommendation, I like to sample it and then if I like it, I go back to the original and start listening. I’ve never actually listened to EW … take a look and see it’s been available for 11 years, 2111 episodes, and quickly decide that I’ll never get to it all if I start it, so I dejectedly passed on the sample.
I listened to every episode from like 430 to 1600, but I just don't have the commute I used to in order to keep up. Now I just listen to spots that catch my interest. There's a list out there of the "best" episodes, too.
I started with the Jeff Sullivan era at episode 1000, in part because I had a commute where I could listen to something. EW is a news-ish podcast so older episodes will date themselves quickly. The offseason episodes are slightly more timeless because there is much less news to cover so the "topics" that come up remain relevant longer.
If you wanted a sample now, start with 2105 (last episode of 2023) and listen through 2107. If you want to fill in older episodes, I would start the catchup at the beginning of the 2023 season in episode 1988.
Thank you both!
I nearly broke my mouse button smashing the 'no' option so hard. I got a friend who listens to some bad sports talk radio and I don't understand why he does that to himself.
Smash that mouse button like Hrbek nearly atomizing the batboy’s arm after launching his Game 6 grand slam.
I haven't consumed sports media outside a very small, carefully curated podcast rotation since...grad school? At least 15ish years
I live in the New York/Boston media market(s) so that is a firm no. On the other hand, it could be amusing to listen to them bash the Yankees but I would probably be driven insane by the arguments.
I put "no" because it isn't "appreciable" but it also isn't 0. Sometimes I can't tune in too many radio stations on my drives, but the local rebroadcast of KFAN carries pretty well in the area, so sometimes that gets a little play.
And sometimes when the Twins are doing well I enjoy listening in and hearing them talk about... the Vikings. Stupid sports radio. All football, all the time.
I started listening to Jomboy's podcast just before the Twins Blue Jays series (featuring Plouffe!).
But other than that, I really don't keep up with the sports world much at all.
I also find myself slipping on podcasts in general. I find it too hard to concentrate on work when listening to podcasts vs. listening to music.
I suppose I wasn't really including podcasts in the question, more your daily TV/radio squawk stuff. The question was inspired by all this nonsense with that ex-punter.
Good grief.
Since at least 2010, ESPN inserted fake names in Emmy entries, then took the awards won by some of those imaginary individuals, had them re-engraved and gave them to on-air personalities.
Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso, Chris Fowler, Desmond Howard and Samantha Ponder, among others, were given the ill-gotten Emmys, according to a source briefed on the matter, who was granted anonymity because the individual is not authorized to discuss it publicly. There is no evidence that the on-air individuals were aware the Emmys given to them were improperly obtained.
what? how did a fake name win an emmy? what kind of categories are these?
Also, do we need to rename it to Fielding Emmy?
“Emmy” is a 4ltr word.
It was probably team effort technical stuff -- Best Editting of a Live Event, with a half dozen people listed
For some reason I'm reading a story about the top candidates to replace Nick Saban, and I was blown away in the comments that someone wrote
After a Cornholer football loss I like to tune in to the Big Red Overreaction, just for the schadenfreude.
I think I hit no on the survey accidentally but I do listen to the SkorNorth guys pretty regularly. Phil Mackey can be a pain in the ass but I tend to agree with his takes and Judd's a lot more than disagree. Also much better than the "Rah Rah Vikings" can do no wrong from Paul Allen or Barriero's "I've never turned down a strawman argument" schtick.
