  1. My grandparents were big rockhounds. I'd be put to work carrying boxes in and out of shows for their exhibition booths. My grandpa loved teaching me about that stuff. I remember once as a grumpy teenager being dragged around Western North Dakota to lift any cannonballs he found. Definitely didn't appreciate it at the time but thinking back, it was pretty cool. I think I have a box of minerals at my parents' place somewhere, I'll have to check it out next time I'm there.

  2. Many years ago one of my coworkers has a book identifying places around the StL area where fossils could be found between the right layers of limestone, and Runner daughter and I brought home a few small shell and trilobite imprints

    1. i saw there was a fairly famous region for hunting geodes near the IL/IA/MO border, but it doesn’t appear to be as easy as just walking around down by the river.

      1. For the last two years my wife and I have watched everything that got a nomination (though I fell asleep the first time I tried to watch it, and only made it halfway through before the ceremony started). Of the 23 categories, only 4 of my personal picks won: Da'Vine Joy Randolph in supporting actress, American Fiction for adapted screenplay, Poor Things for costume, and Zone of Interest for sound. Most winners were ones I didn't prefer, but could at least see where they were coming from and have no issue with, considering judging art by voting is a subjective and largely ineffective way to find excellence.

The only winners I really disagreed with were War is Over! and The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. I thought those were each easily the worst of the nominees in their category. And I know this is my own personal opinion/bias and can understand the artistry behind it, but I did not like Boy and the Heron at all.
