  1. Just got home from car shopping with Younger Daughter. We picked up a 2011 Subaru Outback, black with a tan interior and 157,000 miles up in Princeton. I got it for $7250, paid cash, and the daughter owes me 5 Large (she put $2K down). I gifted her the $500 tax, license and fees. Now we get to sell her 2004 Forester to bring the total deal price down even further (the dealership gave us a lowball offer on a trade-in so we passed). That's the one I just did a front brake job on - rebuilt the calipers, replaced hoses, the whole nine yards. The big bonus on the Outback is working A/C that blows nice and cold, and a cargo cover still neatly stowed in the spare tire compartment and never used. Also has a trailer hitch and sunroof, Harmon Kardon speakers, and original rubber floor mats in front and the cargo area.

    1. I love our ‘08 Outback. It’s the closest thing to a modern Volvo 240 I could find — agricultural but dependable engine, durable drivetrain, surprisingly decent handling, excellent safety, and some nice features. I liked the upright style & more nimble handling of the ‘08 Forester I test drove more, but the rear legroom was on the penalty box side. That ‘11 Outback is going to feel extremely spacious by comparison to the second-gen Forester! Wouldn’t mind having the extra space myself.

    2. Same year as my Forester but with double the miles. I passed 70k about two weeks ago. Not having a commute keeps the wear and tear as low as the mileage. I am surprised about the original rubber floor mats because while I do have mine, it doesn't quite count as a bonus because the driver's has a big hole in it.

      1. No kidding, I'm only driving to the ballpark and back and little errands around town these days. At the end of August we're flying out to Portland and helping Elder Daughter and her hubby drive their cars back here. They're driving the Toyota pickup, we're getting stuck driving the Cadillac. A three-day haul across Oregon, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota and Minnesota, and I'm actually looking forward to it. Because mountains, Gandalf. Mountains.
