      1. Sanchez not taking a mound visit to say something (which means, I assume, he didn't know) tracks with my memories of his catching abilities when he was with the Twins.

      1. I've heard speculation he's Dombrowski-esque so the limitations placed on the Twins by ownership eliminate any possibility of big signings or big trades. He can't move up within the org, and might not be allowed to interview for other GM jobs, so might as well quit and become a proper free agent.

  1. Today is our second day in Barcelona. Walked down to the beach after lunch and stumbled into The Americas Cup. So, that was pretty neat. So far we are batting .333 in terms of great food experiences, so we are taking some measures (and loosening the purse strings) to raise that average. Doing a fixed Waygu experience at Vic Braseria tonight and then tomorrow we hired a guide to take us on a walking tour of local favorite restaurants.

I terms of sightseeing, the trip as been incredible. We are taking a train on Sunday to Madrid. I wish we had better passenger train infrastructure in the states.

Yeah, my trips to Japan always reinforce this. My first real rail experiences were over there, and ever since Amtrak and the El are always disappointments. (Pausing for R_R to put in his two cents.)

      1. I'm all-in on this sentiment. Frecciarossa in Italy was magnificent, and next summer we'll be sampling some Scandinavian and Baltic rail experiences. We're way behind the curve here in the US, but it is nice to see the infrastructure bill has spurred on development.

        1. As I am sure you know, there are huge hurdles to meaningfully expanding Intercity passenger rail in the U.S., particularly high-speed rail. Starting with right-of-way.

Everything about passenger rail expansion in the U.S. is hugely expensive. I'd love to see it happen, but I don't think it likely in our lifetimes. The U.S., outside of the Acela corridor, just doesn't have enough population density to justify the investment.

California has already spent $billions and will spend many $billions more just to build a small portion of an envisioned HSR system.

          1. The California end of Brightline’s planned Vegas to SoCal high speed train is going to be right down the road from our house. If that ends up being cheap (perhaps a big if there), it’ll make it very easy to head there.

          2. The U.S., outside of the Acela corridor, just doesn't have enough population density to justify the investment.

I won't quibble much with the rest, but this is demonstrably false because many areas had interurban rail a century ago and ripped it out. That from an era where the majority (in the 51% sense of the word) of the country's population was "rural".

  2. I only learned this week that there are many many miles of abandoned railroad tracks in American and you can ride them on a bicycle or ebike with an adaptor kit that keeps the front wheel engaged and aligned to one rail and has an outrigger that rides on the other rail for stability and now I want to do this.

      1. Sounds right, drilling into the descriptions and histories some note that they are down to the beds and used as recreation trails now. I know they converted a lot of old rail bed to bike trails around Brainerd.
