I saw three ships sailin', they were all heading my way
I asked the captain what his name was and how come he didn't drive a truck
He said his name was Columbus, I just said, "Good luck"-Bob Dylan

Looking ahead this week a bit, is anyone going to see Franz Nicolay do a book tour stop at Subtext in St. Paul on Thursday evening?
Kids are at that age:
We're taking a quick trip out to the Badlands & Mount Rushmore this MEA - our kids have never been, and the past few years our trips have all been entirely within the state, so this seems like a nice little getaway. But Aristotle (7th grade) is whining non-stop about how she's being forced to go on a trip with her family. (I'm trying to figure out what other kinds of trips she's been taking). I remember my siblings being like this; I'm sure I never was. Except that one time when we went to Yellowstone, which ended up being my favorite trip.
Anyway, I'm planning to still have fun, but I imagine there'll be a few rocky moments on the drive.
If you have any rocky moments, you've gone too far west.
Dark skies -- try spot our latest comet while you're there.
I still remember a bunch of rocks at Badlands.
I bet the comet will be faint by next week but actual dark skies might make it visible? I recommend binoculars nonetheless. I'm hoping for clear skies tonight to spot it.
tonight it should be almost exactly between Venus and Arcturus, so that'll help with binocular orientation
Haha, what a classic 7th grader complaint! One thing that may (or may not) help is to involve her a little in the planning and let her pick one activity that you can all do on the trip so that it doesn't feel like it's all stuff that other people decided on. (Of course, you may have already tried this!)
We're heading up to Grand Marais for the 3rd year in a row. It's not so far that the drive is a big issue and of course once you get beyond the suburbs, there's lots of great scenery along the way. We always go to Drury Lane bookstore and hit up the donut shop (which shuts down for the season after this Saturday), and otherwise it's a variety of hikes and fishing spots. It's nice because we have a good idea of what to expect (and where I can find vegetarian food) while also being able to keep exploring new places/activities.
It's been my intention to try that, but she's been so busy that finding time to plan anything has been basically impossible (cross country, theater, dance, various doctor appointments, makeup homework from missing school, regular homework, religion class - it's been 2 weeks of insanity). Maybe Wednesday evening she can figure something out.
“Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream” is unironically one of my favorite tunes written by the Bard from Hibbing.
So many gems in those verses.
The man says, "Get out of here, I'll tear you limb from limb"
I said, "You know they refused Jesus, too", he said, "You're not Him."
I said for the Pope of Eruke
I was employed;
They let me go right away,
They were very paranoid.
This past week, after 44+ years, we lost the first from our graduating class of fifty five people. She had an immune deficiency diagnosed in 2007 when she was given months to live, and still ended up outliving her husband by a couple years. I really wish I could have kept better contact.
That's amazing that only one person has passed away after 44 years. Just last September we had three people pass over the course of like 10 days. That's from the class of 1981 (290 grads).
I lost three former (contemporary) coworkers in a short amount of time ~20 years ago, and that was a serious wakeup call.
Our class didn't even make it to graduation, we lost Jeff in a car accident junior year.
I think everyone who graduated is still around, but I wouldn't swear to it
My graduating class was 700+ so I suppose statistically someone hasn't survived, but I am in regular contact with exactly zero people from the class so I'll never know.
Mine was a little over 400. We've lost a few, but none in my circle yet.
I'm hoping to run into some of my circle next weekend since they, at one time, curled out of Frogtown.
There were twelve in my graduating class. Two of us are gone.
We've lost over 10% in 43 years. 30 out of 290!
Mets off to a strong start today.
Dodgers had a 33-inning scoreless streak.
My close personal friend has another script. This one is getting very close to a finished deal. Fingers crossed.
Rally cap time in the Bronx.
