October 28, 2024: Nodding Politely

I'm definitely a fruit themed mobile technologies kind of guy. I have the headphones which will automatically read notifications that you receive on your phone. They introduced a new feature where you can respond to prompts by nodding or shaking your head. The problem is you seem to need to do fairly exaggerated head movements to get it across, something that looks weird when someone who was quietly sitting there starts vigorously shaking their head out of nowhere.

  1. The ability to watch a show on the nice LG OLED at night after the rest of the household is asleep by streaming the audio to my earbuds is one of my favorite tiny life improvements of the year. I've been knocking out an episode of The Old Man, The Bear, and Shōgun in recent weeks after ceasing homework for the evening.

  2. Well, I'm invoking Joe Schultz. Got in a three car collision on 169 when traffic went from 60 to 0 in about three seconds. Front end caved in a bit but the airbag deployed so it's a total loss. No other injuries, we had slowed down quite a bit before the impact, but I have a pretty good bruise on my arm from the airbag. Now I have to find a new vehicle before the snow starts to fly. As much as I like cars, that's how much I dislike car shopping.

    1. I had something similar happen on 169 a year ago. Car behind me hit me without even hitting the breaks at about 60. His front bumper was touching my rear tire. Caused a 5 car accident. Of course, he had no insurance.

    2. Ugh.

      Glad you are ok.

My only experiences with car accidents:

      (1) Running a green light in suburban Va in 1987. Woman made a left turn into my late-1970s Civic. Her insurance tried to claim my car was only worth a couple hundred bucks. My soon-to-be FiL (then a DC lawyer who knew the Va insurance commissioner) wrote them a nice letter on firm stationary. I got an almost-reasonable $1,000 settlement.

      (2) Wife's beemer got rear-ended at a red light by a kid who was texting. I don't recall the settlement now, but she still misses that car.

    3. Glad you are ok Twayn. One of our friends has a son who is 17. This summer he was stopped on a 2 lane highway waiting to take a left turn. An oil truck ran into his mid-size car going 60 MPH. Never hit his brakes until after the collision. The pictures are horrific, but he managed to come out of hit with a concussion and a few broken ribs. A true miracle in my opinion. He plays on our high school golf squad. About 4-5 weeks after the accident he decided to enter our club championship (under 18 division). He shot under par and won his division after playing no practice rounds since the accident.

  3. Congratulations to Salvador Perez for winning the Roberto Clemente award. Been a fan of his for a long time, not surprised he's an All-Star off the field as well.
