  1. We're hosting most of the in-laws Thursday. There was already annoying drama about what time we should have everything ready with my SIL wanting us to have things ready by 11:30 so they could go to her boyfriend's parent's place that afternoon. So, since that is insane, they just aren't coming and I'll have the turkeys ready by 1:30, thank you very much. I was planning to smoke one of them, but it might be too cold for that to really work so I may just end up grilling it and tossing some wood chunks on the coals.

  2. First Thanksgiving in Indiana in...9 years? Last one was 2015 right after my grandpa died.

My brother is out of the AF and they moved back to Iowa where Indiana is a reasonable option again.

Not jazzed about 14 hrs in the car, but there are also not too many more chances for this in the future.

  3. For the first time in many years both daughters will be here and will have their menfolk with them, so we're having a quiet, calm immediate family dinner. Turkey and ham, cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese (elder daughter's request), green bean casserole, deviled eggs, dinner rolls, relish tray, pumpkin and pecan pie.

  4. We typically just have the 4 of us for Thanksgiving. My son is bringing his girlfriend and we are without our daughter, who is in Spain. I will brine, then smoke a boneless turkey breast. We will probably play some mexican train dominoes, primarily because I always lose in that stupid game.

I offered to my staff that if people needed hours/tips, I would open at 5pm as there is definitely a demand in our area. There was not much interest, which is what I hoped. I didn't really want to work on an overstuffed belly.

  5. We never travel for Thanksgiving. This year we’ll be repeating last year by ordering 50 pieces of Popeyes and all the sides and not cooking a thing. Okay, not technically cooking, but we are baking a pie.

    1. Awhile ago we gave the Minnesota family a choice between Thanksgiving and Christmas, because we weren't coming back for both anymore. It's usually Xmas unless we're traveling. In that case we'll come up and do Xmas at Thanksgiving.

  6. So when the year ends, Microsoft support for Windows 10 will terminate and my trusty old IBM Thinkpad T61 will no longer be able to run a supported version of Windows. With a Core 2 Duo processor and 8GB of ram, a 250GB SSD drive (with an 8GB swap file) and a docking station with an ATI Radeon graphics card in it, she still has life left. I could go Linux or Chrome, but I'm tempted to reload XP so I can replay all of my old games. Or maybe I'll set it up for dual boot and just fart around with it all winter before retiring it for good. I have an old PC in the closet I'd like to resurrect, too, just to see what the hell is on there from 15 years ago that make me hang on to it.

    1. I'd probably stick with XP. Emulators of old operating systems and hardware work very well but maintaining old hardware remains the best way. If you keep it unconnected to any networks, it's perfectly safe despite being wildly vulnerable.

      1. Yeah, I wouldn't suppose there are any multiplayer servers for those games, I'm just looking for some single player nostalgia. I think I'll partition and do a dual boot with a Linux distro, though, just for kicks.

  7. We're just heading up to my folks' for Thanksgiving, so a quick trip to the north suburbs. I think it's a small group this year - just 40 or so, I'd guess. We're in charge of charcuterie.

  8. We are currently in our camper trailer just outside Joshua Tree, with our immediate family of 2 adults, 2 kids, and 2 dogs. We got here last night, and will head home by Saturday at the latest. We’ll probably do some hiking in Joshua Tree, maybe Anzo Barrego, too, but we’ll mostly just hang out and relax. No one but me cares about the turkey feast, so we’re sticking with easy camper foods for the week.

  9. Going to have a house full. MiL, BiL, SiL and significant other and neice, daughter and significant other, and a couple of friends.

I only got a 13.8 lb turkey. It was the biggest I could find at Costco of their 99 cent per pound natural birds. Lots of sides, desserts, etc.

I have my hip replacement on Monday, so....
