  1. While I'm posting about the office, I might as well put this somewhere:

Last year was my biggest year ever as a solo attorney, and I came into the year feeling like if I just maintained I would be doing well. I just ran some numbers and, though this doesn't tell the whole story, my cases opened went from 150 to 175, and I'm at about 10% more billable hours on the year. Growth continues. Too much growth probably.

On another note, if anyone knows anyone looking for a paralegal or office position and wants to work in my area...

    1. I have a niece starting a six-month gig in Tulsa for a new TV series being filmed there (w/ Steve Buscemi and Ethan Hawke). Since we've been talking for years about making a trip back to OK that's not for a funeral, looks like we'll be going in late February to visit her and see as many of my relatives as possible in five days. My brother is near OKC and I have lots of cousins and a niece in Tulsa as well. Also one uncle and one aunt. Turns out hotel rooms are pretty cheap. Still deciding about driving vs. flying. There are no direct flights so we're talking about anywhere from 6 to 8 hours of flying with layovers, plus travel to and from airports, security check-in, etc. Probably a ten hour day flying and I can drive it in twelve with a lot less hassle as long as the weather cooperates. And no need for car rental if we drive. We'll see how things shake out when I start doing pricing and budget.

  2. No.

More seriously, work has always shut down for the the Christmas through New Year's week. Previous employer had the financial calendar end with the regular calendar, so there were always some unlucky souls forced to grind for the last bit of revenue (it was usually a big chunk for the company) but that is no longer the case. This year they only required working a half day on Monday (???) so I took it all off and padded it to include the first three days of 2025. I will get a pair of truly quiet days once school resumes.

  3. Yeah, the week between Christmas and New Years is always our busiest week of the winter months. Lots of gift cards rolling back in, no school, etc. I scheduled and extra manager, so I am in my office updating pricing on our inventory sheets as we will do a physical inventory of all food and beverage on Sunday night for end of year.

    1. Selfishly, I hope you’re busy, but not too busy. We’re participating in our first Squirt hockey travel tournament this weekend, heading to Alexandria tomorrow for the Big ‘Ol Tournament at the Runestone Community Center. Games are tomorrow night, two on Saturday and possibly one on Sunday. Hoping to visit your spot for a meal and maybe an in-person greeting at some point!
paging nibbish too - perhaps an adult beverage?

    1. Ugh. Also have an employee in crisis. Always when I’m out of the city, state, country things seem to fall apart. No one is there for support because our holiday pay is Xmas Eve, Xmas, nye, ny day, which makes for a continent 5 days of pto = two actual weeks off. I’m in peterville through nye and then off til the 6th.

  4. I had a court of appeals brief due today, so yup. (But I got it filed by 215, and then skedaddled to catch the end of the Liverpool- Leicester City match)

  5. One big benefit of the academic calendar is that I’m off until January 6. I did respond to some student emails today, and will need to have all my class materials up and ready for students by early morning in the 6th. But, that can all be done on my own schedule at least.
