We've had similar discussions lately about pets, but our old cat will be 18½ in the very near future. He's arthritic as hell (which is tough since we have a split level) and hasn't been eating much lately. Still, I haven't really entertained any "final" options. I hope I know, for his sake, when the time is right.

Timing on this topic is appropriate for me - which is kind of weird, because I've never been a pet person. But my office admin didn't come into work yesterday as a visit to the vet became an unexpected final visit to the vet. Her kids were in school and didn't even get a chance to say goodbye, which must have been very tough.
If/when you find yourself in that position, the services where someone comes to your home to help end things are much more peaceful (for the pet and for the family) than in a vet's office.
Concur. We were one day away from putting Harper to sleep when she died on her own, but we used that service to pick her up and do the cremation. Made things a lot easier on us, but damn, that was just a hard couple of days.
I saw that old friend Rooker got himself a payday and Little Nicky Punto is now a member of the Padres' coaching staff.
Five years, $60 million. There's a vesting option for a sixth year that could go as high as $90 million total. Good for him.
Hadn’t thought of him in a very long time, but this is now twice in the same day I’m reminded of LNP! From Gleeman’s Kepler retrospective in The Athletic:
