February 15, 2025: Shocker

We were having issues with our ancient power box. Thankfully the electrician was able to get it going with a few simple switches. Having half of the outlets (and dishwasher) in your house out definitely helps you to appreciate it once they're back.

    1. Last weekend I cleaned out the dishwasher drain screen because it was leaving a lot of water in the tub at the end of the cycle. I did get a bunch of gunk out but it didn't fix the problem. I can manually set it to the last couple of drain cycles and that does the job. I figure it's a problem in the control panel for me, too, since the pump is working just fine. If that's the case we'll get a new one since there may be a kitchen remodel in our future this year anyway. A lot will depend on HELOC rates.

      1. All the d@mn appliances aren't built to last anymore, which sucks: the GE we've got is quiet, does a good job using minimal water, etc, but the problems are common enough that I found a plethora of YouTube videos in how to replace it.

    2. I disassembled the dryer yesterday, gave it a good cleaning, lubed the wheels teh drum rides on, and put it all back together. Works as it did before, very happy with the unit. It was old when we moved into this house 8+ years ago and I've been able to keep it going with minimal cost.

  1. I know a little late for AOG's, but...
Last storm I was trying to add gas to the snowblower with my mittens on. The gas can spout has a sliding black plastic dealie where you have to both twist it (to get it to be able to slide into the sleeve, then push it in to release the opening to let the gas flow. I hate it. It's hard to get to work, worse when wearing mittens, which ended up getting gas on them. It's a disaster designed by a guy/gal who will end up in that Dante circle of hell where the guy/gal who invented car alarms will be.
So later, I'm in Lowes with NBBW looking at gas cans, and they all have this green safety gizmo on the top to make it safe, I guess. The next day at lunch, without prompting, my buddy Max tells me the same story. We will wait for a tag sale to buy an older, simpler gas can.

    1. I have a battery powered snow blower and it surprisingly does a better job than the gas one I used for 20 years. Easier to start? Check. Quieter? Check. Throws snow farther? Check. Lighter to maneuver? Check. The only gas powered thhings I have are my vehicle and my riding lawn mower. I see myself going to an electric vehicle (not a Tesla)next time i am looking

      1. I want to get an Ego snowblower (because I already have the battery for the lawnmower) but they're do damn expensive that I can't justify it until the gas blower dies. I look forward to one day not having to rebuild the carburetor every winter.

        1. I wouldn't mind replacing mine; the cable for the impeller keeps coming loose and it's annoying to fix it multiple times. But switching to electric would require investment in switching everything else to match the battery system.
