March 6, 2025: Wotcher

I recently and randomly switched my VPN to England for no particular reason. I was later looking for a recipe when I realized: Oh no, all the recipes results are British! TURN IT OFF! TURN IT OFF!!

  1. Managing yesterday's e-learning day was so disruptive I ended up taking a half-day off work. But on the plus side, I definitely think I can ace both the 6th grade math test and the 9th grade algebra test today!

    1. I was in the office but Philosofette and the kids clearly had a stressful day of e-learning. I think Aristotle (7th grade) ended up with more work than she'd have had during a normal day.

        1. Hmm, don't know that one. Which one in Osaka*? I've gone to about 3 different places there. Okonomiyaki certainly isn't my favorite dish, but done right, it can be quite tasty. Preferably made right in front of, then stuffed into your face.

*I'm know I said this here before, but other than my curling club/brewpub, one of my lottery dreams is to open a little 9-seat bar in Namba.

          1. Just a joint off the street in Dotonbori - yes, made right in front of us.

Also had a skewer of yakitori that kinda freaked me out, and later I found out it was strips of chicken neck.

            Yes, Namba rocks!

    1. I had my first okonomiyaki in London last summer.

My in-laws have lived in Japan for years, so it was kind of surprising to be introduced to a Japanese dish I hadn't seen before in the 20 years of interacting with them.

I liked it, and also it's probably not in my "top Japanese dishes" list.

      1. After visiting Koyasan, I'd have to put on the top of my N. food list the Buddhist vegetarian meal we had at a shikubu: Shojin ryori .

And I found out later, it's on the UNESCO intangibles list. Cool concept - five methods: boiling, baking, steaming, frying, and raw; five colors: red, yellow, green, white, black; five flavors: sweet, sour, spicy, bitter, and salty.
