  1. I had a dream last night where I was at some high-society party in Indianapolis. Meat was there, and he looked like a scrawny frat-boy with glasses. He talked a mile a minute, and he was showing off to everyone that he could chase after Indy cars, grab them by their spoilers, and make them crash into the ocean (yes, there was an ocean in Indianapolis). He did it, and instead of getting arrested, he got muffled cheers and an admonishment by police.

    1. Awesome. However, I look more like drew carey than a skinny frat boy.

no one wants to hear what you dreamt about unless you dreamt about them

        1. I carried on an e-mail exchange with Doug several years ago and I can say that he he's a quality dude.

    1. Just saw the highlights. Two of the homers were off lefties and two were opposite field homers.

  2. Really? AP:

Holmes does not appear to be part of any terrorist or criminal network; officials say his purchases were legitimate and raised no red flags. Until Friday, he did nothing to bring him to the attention of law enforcement.

In the post 9/11 world, buying certain books will arouse suspicion, but buying assault rifles, armor, and thousands of rounds of ammunition does not arouse suspicion.

    1. from my hometown rag this morning, the above-the-fold headline: Father's emotion shows pain of Batman tradegy

      Oy.

  3. On another topic, I see that Penn State has removed the JoePa statue.

Comedian Albert Brooks said the school should leave the Paterno statue up but "have him look the other way."

    1. His infomercials have continuously aired on average every 30 minutes, 24 hours a day somewhere in North America since their initial introduction in April 1989, the website says.

I have never seen a Tony Robbins infomercial. But I have seen a lot of 'make your own taco boat' infomercials this past week.

      1. But I have seen a lot of 'make your own taco boat' infomercials this past week.

        ...go on.

        1. its this mold where you can take any tortilla, cook it in the over for 5 minutes, and then you have a nice crisp taco boat!

    2. Mythbusters proved showed this is science, not supernatural. From Mythbusters Wikipedia:

The Build Team first tested how much heat could be transferred into a bare foot by walking over coals with heat-resistant silicone. They then theorized that feet do not get burned due to three factors: the foot does not stay in contact with the coals long enough to get burned, and both the coals and the resulting ash form an insulating layer to lock in the majority of the heat. They then tried coal walking, and easily crossed them. The team noted that they felt confident because of their faith in physics. For a more complete result, the Build Team had Adam, who was not aware of the physics involved, cross the coals. When Adam tried, he had his feet burned, though this was attributed to Adam using the incorrect technique. Adam walked too fast and had hot coals stuck under his toes, meaning they stayed in contact with his skin longer than normal.

  4. I look forward to spoons' review of Magic Mike. Here's a preview:

In Munn’s defense, though, I saw her topless scene – which came at the same time as Channing Tatum’s completely unnecessary ass shot – as a message from Steven Soderbergh: “Here’s your man ass and here are your tits. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a story to tell.” At least that’s what I hope he tells the audience when he accepts Best Director.

      1. I have no idea what the context of that clip is, but it confirms to me that I need to watch this show.

            1. I bust out an "Are we having fun yet?" on Sheenie at least once a week. It's a hilariously great show.

    1. Yeah, I watched the last couple of holes (forgot the time difference). I don't know that it's Van De Velde-ian, since Scott lost three shots over four holes, instead of all on the 72nd, but that was painful to watch. The second he bogied 17, I knew he was toast (and he still almost came back with that great approach shot on 18).

      1. My brother says I got the reference wrong. It was more Greg Norman like since both Norman and Scott are Aussies.

      2. It felt like your tag description from last night's recap, "death by papercuts". I wasn't watching it live, but the video recap of 15 - 18 was pretty brutal.

        1. It really was. Nothing catastrophic like the 18th on Carnoustie, just a lot of slightly awry shots that added up to a really disappointing result (though it was nice to see Els get back to the top. It feels like that's been a long time coming.)

          1. I hadn't realized Big Easy was that close to start the day - didn't catch much of the coverage from Round 3. I'm with you though, don't mind seeing him take it.

            1. He wasn't really that close. He was six strokes back at the start of play. They did mention this is the second biggest deficit overcome on the final day at the Open Championship. Number one was Paul Lawrie when he came back from ten (!!) strokes to beat Van De Velde in the '99 playoff.

              1. I was thinking close as in "Top 5" to start the day...six strokes does make it all the more epic.

                1. Ah, that makes sense. I guess I hadn't really been paying attention to that, either. I always get excited when I see an Els or someone from the late 90's/early 2000's making a charge, though.

  5. The paper of record with a interesting write up on take-backsies. I wonder if the Ethics board at the Times will weigh in here.

    1. I don't really understand why those things are the property of the players to begin with. Do their contracts specify that they are to be provided uniforms that are to be their property?

  6. Wes Johnson's dominance is Summer League play makes me think he would be a good D-Leaguer.

      1. I think they are called points in this corner of the basement, no?

  7. I bought Dr. Chop a nice urban commuter bike for our 6th anniversary. She got me a box of boston baked beans candy. She really knows how to hit my sweet spot.

      1. A helmet is an absolute must down there. Seriously. One of Sheenie's sister's friends was in a coma for more than one year after a bike accident and I've seen a few others in my limited time visiting. The drivers suck and the roads have potholes the size of sinkholes. Just make sure Dr. Chop is staying safe.

        1. The new bike came with a new helmet for sure. She's not going to be biking down Napoleon / Claiborne / any major street as we've already seen some close calls.

  8. Just got back from The Dark Knight Rises. I greatly enjoyed it. Not always a fun movie, but a very good one.

Seriously though, I don't know what vendetta Nolan has against easily distinguishable voices. It sounded like half of the movie's lines were whispered (or shouted) through a box fan and ten feet of mud.

    1. Haven't seen it, but that's the most common complaint I've heard...not described nearly that eloquently of course. 🙂

  9. Not a great performance by Team USA vs Argentina today. They couldn't hit a jump shot, other than Durant. And almost no love for Love. What's up with that?

I wish Coach K had the nerve to phase Melo out. This team doesn't need a volume shooter.

    1. I think it would be terrific if this team fell on their face because of 'Melo and Coach K.

  10. Let's see:
Team USA features Carmelo (---), Coach K (---------------------------), Love (+++), Kobe (--), LeBron (+), Durant (++), Harden (+), the Brow (+), and a bunch of guys to whom I am neutral.

Team UK features Pops (++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++), Deng (- for being a dookie), and a bunch of guys no one knows.

Looking at my scientific scoring scale, I'm definitely taking UK as my team.

  11. Wow. Penn State hit with 60MM fine and all wins from 1998 to 2011 vacated. Which means Paterno no longer winningest coach in D-1 history. (Bobby Bowden step up to the podium to receive your tarnished crown).

Also the NYT has a good article on JoePos' JoePa book. Basically they've not marketing it like they would normally and Posnanski isn't doing a lot of interviews for the book.
