Minor Details: Games of 7/21

A sweep for Elizabethton.  Kyle Gibson continues his comeback.  Another wild game in the DSL.

ROCHESTER AT DURHAM

Rained out.  The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

HARRISBURG 5, NEW BRITAIN 0 IN HARRISBURG

Batting starDeibinson Romero was 2-for-3.

Pitching starDaniel Turpen struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up one hit and walking two.

Opposition stars:  Justin Bloxom and Sean Nicol were each 2-for-4.  Trevor Holder allowed only three hits and no walks in seven innings.

Key inning:  The fourth.  Leading 2-0, the Senators had two on with two out.  Brian Goodwin drove both runners home with a double, and later scored on a Chris Rahl single to put the game out of reach.

FORT MYERS 6, LAKELAND 5 IN LAKELAND

Batting stars:  None.

Pitching starsMichael Tonkin struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and two walks.  Miguel Munoz struck out two and walked one in a scoreless inning.

Opposition stars:  Marcus Lemon was 4-for-5 with a double.  Daniel Fields was 3-for-5 with a double.  Victor Larez threw two shutout innings.

Key inning:  The sixth.  The score was tied at four.  Jonathan Goncalves and Andy Leer opened the inning with walks.  Angel Morales doubled to score one and Daniel Santana hit a sacrifice fly to bring in another.  In the bottom of the inning, Tyler Collins hit a two-out RBI triple to make the score 6-5, but the next batter flied out to end the threat.

Other:  The Miracle was out-hit 13-5, but drew ten walks.  The teams combined for 34 at-bats with runners in scoring position.

GREAT LAKES 7, BELOIT 2 IN BELOIT

Batting starWang-wei Lin was 2-for-2 and was hit by pitches twice.

Pitching starSteven Evans struck out five in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and walking two.

Opposition stars:  Scott Shebler was 3-for-5.  Gustavo Gomez struck out nine in five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks.  Joel Lima struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up only one hit.

Key inning:  The fifth.  Leading 3-0, the Loons scored three more times.  A double, an error, two singles, and another error produced the runs.  JaDamion Williams hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the inning, but the Snappers never really got back into the game.

ELIZABETHTON 10, JOHNSON CITY 1 IN ELIZABETHTON (COMPLETION OF SUSPENDED GAME)

Batting starsJhonatan Arias was 3-for-4 with a double and home run (his first), scoring three times.  Romy Jimenez was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run (his sixth), driving in six.  Candido Pimentel was 2-for-4.

Pitching starsTaylor Rogers struck out ten in six innings, giving up a run on three hits and a walk.  Tyler Herr allowed only a walk in two shutout innings.

Opposition stars:   None.

Key inning:  The fourth.  It was a scoreless tie.  A single, a walk, and a single loaded the bases with none out.  Walks to Jimenez and Max Kepler forced in two runs.  Adam Walker then singled to drive in two and give the Twins a 4-0 lead.

ELIZABETHTON 4, JOHNSON CITY 2 IN ELIZABETHTON (GAME 2—SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting starJoshua Hendricks had the only extra-base hit for the Twins, a double, going 1-for-3.

Pitching starHudson Boyd gave up one run on five hits and a walk while striking out four in five innings.

Opposition stars:  Ildemar Vargas and Jeremy Schaffer were each 2-for-4.

Key inning:  The sixth.  In a 1-1 tie, an error and a single put two on with one out.  Romy Jimenez singled to put the Twins ahead by one.  A run scored on a fielder’s choice, and Kelvin Mention delivered an RBI single to give Elizabethton a 4-1 lead.

GCL RED SOX 5, TWINS 1 AT TWINS

Batting starsKelvin Ortiz was 3-for-3 with a double.  Logan Wade was 2-for-4 with a double.  Kelly Cross hit a home run, his first.

Pitching starJose Berrios threw three perfect innings, striking out three.

Opposition stars:  Miguel Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a double.  Jeremias Pineda was 2-for-5 with a triple.  Mario Alcantara worked five shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks.

Key inning:  The ninth.  Leading 2-1, the Red Sox scored three times to put the game out of reach.  A single and a triple scored the first run with none out.  A one-out single scored the second, and a two-out triple brought home the third.  Pineda and Keaton Briscoe delivered the triples.

OtherKyle Gibson started and pitched one inning, allowing one hit but no runs.

DSL PADRES 11, TWINS 10 AT PADRES (12 INNINGS)

Batting starsJorge Andrade was 2-for-4.  Rafael P Valera was 2-for-5.  Francis Mateo was 0-for-2 but walked four times.

Pitching starsJose Abreu struck out four in four shutout innings, allowing only one hit and no walks.  Fernando Romero struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Jonas Lantigua was 3-for-4 with a double.  Yorky Diaz was 3-for-5 with a double.  Franmil Reyes was 2-for-4 with a double.

Key inning:  The twelfth.  The score was tied at eight.  Joel Polanco hit a two-run triple to put the Twins ahead 10-8, but was thrown out trying to make it an inside-the-park home run.  In the bottom of the inning, the Padres but two on with none out and Christhofer Martinez hit a three-run walk-off homer.

Other:  The Twins led 6-0 after six innings and 7-3 after 7 ½.  Each team made four errors.  Twins pitchers walked eight and Padres pitchers walked thirteen.
