WGOM Fitness: 14 January 2013, Tomorrow is Resolution Day

First of all, I want to thank Philosopher for his post. My whole purpose of re-booting the fitness feature was to get people going and involved. If you want to post, let me know and I'll make sure that I don't clobber your post.

A couple of weeks ago, we talked about resolutions, which is the traditional thing to do on the first day of the year. By this time, most people have forgotten about their New Year's resolutions and have gone back to the same old, same old. To combat this, I am going to have monthly resolutions around here. I report at work on the 15th of every month, so we're going to have monthly fitness resolutions on the 15th. I will unveil mine tomorrow and I will invite you to add yours, if you are so inclined.

After a terrific workout plan over Christmas break, I kind of stumbled when I got here to ND. I was just so damned tired the first few days I was here that it was easy to rationalize away the exercise. Plus, I kind of got off of the diet, with the result being that I weighed in at 217 this morning. I don't really trust that scale, of course, but my weight loss has stalled out with the end in sight. So, part of what I am going to do over the next month is to set a modest weight loss goal and a workout goal. Then, I will work to try and accomplish it.

Let's just say that I felt what was six days elapsed since my last workout. It was hard for me to get loose and I just felt crappy. But, I put in 30 minutes on the AirDyne bike. So, that happened and I'll get back on it tonight.

  1. At the beginning of the year I challenged 5 of my friends to a contest. Whoever entered their calories into MyFitnessPal for the most days in a row would win $100 from me. It's a good challenge for them, but is really designed as motivation for me to keep my money. I'm proud to report that all 6 of us have stuck to our new years resolution for at least two weeks. Fifty to go.

  2. Glad to take one of the posts... one of my goals will be to post a WGOM fitness entry once a week. Sharing about my approach seems to help. I don't know about a specific day of the week, but we could try to work that out if you want.

    1. Doc* told me that mine likely wasn't the flu. He then told me that my daughter likely did have pneumonia! Go in for a possible cold-related ear infection, come home with antibiotics and a nebulizer!

    “There still remains the widespread perception that a little stigma can be a good thing, that it might motivate weight loss,” said Dr. Puhl, a clinical psychologist. (Medical doctors, too, fall prey to this misconception.) But research done at the Rudd Center and elsewhere has shown that even well-intentioned commentary from parents and other adults can trigger disordered eating, use of laxatives and other dangerous weight-control practices, and depression.

    I've been caught in the vice a few times, accused by my daughter of nagging her about her weight. Which has never been true -- I've nagged her about her eating a healthy diet, but never, ever about her weight (she's never been a skinny minny like many of her peers; instead, she has a, umm, "athletic" build), 'cause I think she's Just Fine. (apple of my eye and all that)

    That said, I suppose that even nagging about eating a balanced diet is easily interpreted as nagging about weight. Better to just continue to offer up balanced meals and STFU.

  4. A good weekend here - two doubles (relaxed swim on Sat and 9 mi long run, outside 16 mi bike on Sun and long swim at race pace), and workout on a travel day (which is always challenging).
