Mark Maron told me to listen to Mr. Vile, and now I'm making you listen to Mr. Vile. I'm not entirely sold on his sound, but I will say that he's got an interesting mix of dylan and lou reed in his voice.

  1. lotta Lou Reed in his voice. But this one went on about two minutes too long, I think. And is it just me, or did he have a lot of weird (amateurish?) transitions in his guitar-playing? the song was pretty enough, but it just seemed to my untrained ears that it would have been much better in the hands of a more skilled guitarist.

      1. hmm, i'll agree on the strange transitions. this is my first exposure so i can't comment too much, but, yeah, a lot of wonkyness going on here. it's a bit too jarring to say it's intentional, but i can't say for sure. as someone that's written songs that are too difficult for me to properly play, i can't deny that that's might be what's going on here.

    2. I've known him for a long time and am quite biased. He's pretty skilled, but it sure does look choppy here. 🙂 Keep listening! 🙂 John

  2. Mr. Vile was on Bootsy's 'best of' a few years back and his voice resonated enough to pick up Smoke Ring. Have to be in the right frame of mind, but I do enjoy it.

    Haven't heard the new album yet, but if this is any indication, I will be listening more soon.

    1. Yeah, I'm a pretty big Kurt Vile fan, though I must say the electric version on the LP of the same name of is far superior. Here's a better (and much shorter) version with his band the Violaters on Letterman.

      I think the person he most reminds me of is J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr, though he has a whole host of classic rock influences, including the aforementioned Dylan and Reed. His stuff grows on you with repeated listens. (Also, I know meat and Buffalo are fans of The War on Drugs, a band that Kurt co-founded before breaking off solo.)

  3. I think I'm doomed to confuse him with the late Jay Reatard, based on monosyllabic first name and last names seeming to offend.
