Twins: Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was used as a pinch-hitter and was 1-for-1. Daniel Ortiz (Mayaguez) was 0-for-3.
Santurce: Edwin Maysonet (Cincinnati) was 3-for-5 with a double. Neftali Soto was 3-for-5. David Harden pitched five shutout innings, giving up three hits and no walks with four strikeouts.
Mayaguez: Luis Figueroa was 2-for-4 with a double. Randy Ruiz was 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homer, scoring twice.
The game: Santurce scored both its runs in the fourth. Ruiz tied it with a two-run homer in the sixth. In the eighth, a pair of walks and a three-run homer by Jerry Sands (Pittsburgh) put Mayaguez in the lead to stay.
CAGUAS 7, CAROLINA 1 IN CAGUAS
Carolina: Robinson Cancel was 2-for-3 with a run. Ruben Gotay was 2-for-3. Jose Castro was 2-for-4.
Caguas: Juan Silva (Dodgers) was 3-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once and driving in three. Johnny Monell (San Francisco) was 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, and a home run (his second), driving in two. Michael Nix pitched 5.1 innings, allowing one run on eight hits and no walks with three strikeouts.
The game: Doubles by Silva and Monell sandwiched a walk and gave Caguas a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Carolina's lone run came in the fourth and made the score 3-1, but a three-run Caguas sixth, highlighted by a two-run Silva single, put the game out of reach.
