Can I just state for the record how incredibly tired I am of the awful starting pitching? That's been covered? In depth? Good.

I probably won't see much of this one, because I'll be raking and planting grass in the front yard (had a sewer line put in last fall). I expect to come back and see that Hughes struck out 12 in 5 innings before giving up 4 home runs in the 6th. We'll still win, though, because the offense voted "least likely to amount to anything" has turned out to be chock full of overachievers.

  18. MLB gobots: That was pitch number 75 for Phil Hughes; his effectiveness may start slipping, as he holds opposing hitters to a .280 average in the first 75 pitches but they hit .467 off him after that.

    80 of Hughes' 107 pitches were strikes. 19 of them were first-pitch strikes. Impressive performance for a staff that needed one.

    1. You know, I'm kind of ok with this Pinto guy. I would really enjoy seeing him catch more often with some sort of legitimate power bat being brought in (Willingham?) to DH.

        1. That's a good point. Maybe I should have said Arcia instead. Either way, I know there's at least one or two hitters somewhere's in the system ready to, or close to ready to come in and DH while Pinto catches and Suzuki veterans. I know Suzsy is hitting pretty good to star the year, but with as many walks as this team is taking it seems to me power would be awesome to have.

  25. First of all, congrats to Spooky on that movie business.

    Second, good to see Hughes had a good game. Of all the starters to get off to a crappy start, I feel best about Phil going forward (something about strikeouts.)

  27. Glen, dammit, just because Nathan is in the stadium doesn't mean you have to honor our perceptions...

  28. Random observations from the game:

    1. Pinto really can't throw. All of his throws between innings were wildly off-target.
    2. That was insanely cold. It looked like it should be warm (it was about 15 degrees warmer outside my house both before and after the game than at Target Field).
    3. In the seventh inning, a few people tried to start up an "Over-Rated" chant when Joe came up. Yup.
    4. There were quite a few people around talking about Hunter's "great play" in the first inning when he got a comically awful jump off the bat before catching Plouffe's soft line drive.
    5. Why is Gardy bringing Burton into that situation and why was Gardy letting him face Cabrera? For the second Burton appearance before, it hasn't bit him, but WHY?!
    6. Dozier's at bat when Sanchez got hurt was incredibly unlucky as he first had a bunt land six feet fair and spin foul and then had to other balls drift barely foul. He almost had three hits that time up before walking.
    7. The fifth inning worked out, but the fourth was infuriating. That reliever had no control, walks Mauer, hits Plouffe, and then Colabello, Kubel, and Pinto are up hacking rather than making him throw a strike. Not one of them took a strike.

    1. I must have been in a section with a higher baseball IQ. Even the Tiger fan who was trying to convince the section that Torii Hunter was the best Twins player in history had a chuckle at the "jump" on that diving catch.

      Remember last year/this spring training when the talk is that Pinto needed more time in Rochester to work on the defensive side of catching? How do the Twins balance the "he needs to play because his bat is a HR threat" and "he ant play because Prince Fielder can steal bases on him"?
