FMD: 9/5/14

I've been to Canada and back. Their accent seems a lot closer to Minnesotan than, say, Texan does.
Muchmusic was celebrating 30 years and showed its "100 greatest videos" off and on.
I caught bits of that. I was surprised it wasn't all Barenaked Ladies and Kardinal Offishall. Whenever things showed up that seemed unlikely to count among "10,000 greatest videos", the only explanation we could ever figure out was that it was Canadian.
I never did see "Northern Touch".

Here are two new music videos that I liked in part:
Zola Jesus, Peaking Lights.

    Notes:
    9. This is one of those obscure little GBV songs that just blows me away. Most bands would kill for a song like this and it's buried on the 6th disk of a series of 100-song outtake compliations.

B1. Jayhawks at the Turf Club was as wonderful as it sounds. Great set, great location, great crowd. Actually the highlight was a Golden Smog tune: Until You Came Around. The whole place was just beaming during that song. They played for about 2 hours and I think eveyone could have easily gobbled up another hour.

  2. CC to Can of Corn: you've got mail at the hotmail address I have. Let me know if you aren't able to print it.

    9. This song hits a spot I didn't know I had. I think if someone had played this song for me when I was single I would have fallen for them without regard to anything else.
    10. I once saw these guys at the 9:30 club in D.C. The bass player looked like a muppet, both in appearance and movement.

      1. I was not aware of the original.

But this is cool: Architecture in Helsinki also played at that show (also, it was the Black Cat, not the 9:30 club, as previously reported)(Oct. 7, 2005).

        1. That AIH song led me to listen to dozens of other songs by them, only to realize that what I wanted was more of "Heart It Races" that I was frustrated by those other songs not being "Heart it Races" so I gave up.

    a. So, we can call New-World Warblers "Warblers" and New-World Flycatchers "Flycatchers", but no member of the genus Turdus can be called a robin except Turdus migratorius? Somewhere, a taxonomic pedant is planning on forcing Americans to call our familiar robins "American Thrushes". Expect that to go over worse than sub-planetary status for Pluto. Why stop without going for "Clay-coloured"? I, for one, should I ever see one of these, will call it a "Clay-colored Robin".
    4. AJR was almost named "SMR", but not after this song. We ditched that plan after she was born. Glad that we did so.
    5. LL's birthday was yesterday. HBD, LL!

    d. My first day exploring Vancouver's Stanley Park, I heard a few Ravens but didn't see them (trees there are tall!). Over the next two days, I saw a few but never heard them, and never more than a passing glimpse. I wanted more of this bird that's taken a mythical importance in my household because it's 4-letter banding code is "CORA".
