Minor Details: Games of May 17

Ryan Wheeler makes a big debut in a Red Wings win.   The Lookouts waste a good performance by Tyler Duffey.  Kohl Stewart and Chad Christensen lead the Miracle to victory.  The Kernels come back twice, but can't do it a third time.

ROCHESTER 5, LEHIGH VALLEY 3 IN LEHIGH VALLEY

Batting stars:  Ryan Wheeler was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Josmil Pinto was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Nate Hanson was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Taylor Rogers pitched six innings, giving up one run on four hits and no walks with four strikeouts.  A. J. Achter pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Chase d'Arnaud was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Brian Bogusevic was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Jason Berken struck out three in three shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk.

The game:  Hanson put the Red Wings on the board with an RBI single in the fourth.  In the fifth they added four on only two hits, being aided by three walks and a hit batsman.  The IronPigs got one in the sixth and two in the eighth to cut the lead to 5-3.  They had the tying run on base with two out, but their last four batters were retired.

Of note:  Eric Farris was 0-for-5.  James Beresford was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Eric Fryer was 2-for-4 with a run.  Danny Ortiz was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.

MONTGOMERY 2, CHATTANOOGA 1 IN CHATTANOOGA

Batting stars:  Max Kepler was 2-for-2 with two walks.  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-4.  Carlos Paulino was 2-for-4.

Pitching star:  Tyler Duffey struck out twelve in seven innings, giving up one run on seven hits and three walks.

Opposition stars:  Joey Rickard was 3-for-4 with two doubles.  Boog Powell was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.  Jaime Schultz struck out six in three innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits and three walks.

The game:  An error, a single, and two walks brought home the lone Lookouts run in the first inning.  It looked for a while like that might be enough, but in the fifth Powell tripled and scored on a Johnny Field double to tie the score.  In the ninth Thomas Coyle singled, went to second on a bunt, took third on a ground out, and scored on a Richie Shaffer single.  The Lookouts stranded eight men and were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

FORT MYERS 5, JUPITER 3 IN JUPITER

Batting stars:  Chad Christensen was 3-for-4 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in two.  Marcus Knecht was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Jason Kanzler was 2-for-5 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Kohl Stewart pitched five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  Brian Gilbert pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and two walks.  J. T. Chargois pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  J. T. Riddle was 4-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Yefri Perez was 2-for-4 with a run.

The game:  It was tied 2-2 after six.  In the seventh, Christensen had an RBI double and Michael Quesada had a run-scoring single, both with two out, to put the Miracle up 4-2.  The Hammerheads loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh but could only score one, cutting the lead to 4-3.  The Miracle got an insurance run in the eighth on a wild pitch.  The Hammerheads got a single and two walks in the bottom of the eighth but failed to score, and they went down in order in the ninth.

Of note:  Zach Granite was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Niko Goodrum was 0-for-4 with a walk.

QUAD CITIES 6, CEDAR RAPIDS 5 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Tyler Kuresa was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.  T. J. White was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Pat Kelly was 2-for-5 with a triple and a run.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Bobby Boyd was 3-for-5 with three doubles and two runs.  Jacob Nottingham was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in two.  Sean McMullen was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his third.

The game:  The Kernels scored twice in the third to take a 2-1 lead, but a two-run River Bandits sixth tied it 3-3.  A wild pitch put the Kernels up 4-3 after six but McMullen's two-run homer in the seventh made it 5-4 River Bandits.  Trey Vavra homered in the eighth to tie it 5-5, but in the ninth Boyd hit a leadoff double, went to third on a bunt, and scored on Nottingham's single.  Kuresa doubled with one out in the ninth but was stranded on second.

Of note:  Tanner English was 1-for-4 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.  Vavra was 1-for-4 with a home run, his fourth.  Max Murphy was 0-for-5.  Zack Larson was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Jared Wilson pitched six innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
