May 20, 2015: Wake Up

Two nights ago I ran a chaperone thing through work where we take a bunch of video game systems to a high school graduation party with tons of food, candy and soda, and not so much drugs. It's fun enough every year that I wonder why I wasted so many years wasted.

  1. From yesterday's gamelog:

    Nolasco (3-1, 6.38 ERA, 4.85 xFIP)

    After yesterday (fangraphs):

    Nolasco (4-1, 6.00 ERA, 4.25 xFIP)

Goin' the right direction! 3.22 FIP. .413 BABIP. Wow on that last one.

    1. Huh. His strikeout rate is solid (his walk rate's a bit high). He's getting lucky on his fly balls, but that BABIP. That's crazy. That has to come down, right? Is he just giving up screaming screaming line drives every time they manage to put the bat on the ball?

      1. Does that account poor defense? Last night either Dozier or Mauer botches a play and the scorer ruled it a hit instead of an error.

        1. It was Dozier with the bases loaded and two outs in the second inning right after the Twins had their big inning. Mauer also had an error that led to a run later in the game.

  2. Heard on the radio at the dentist's office that Yes' bassist Chris Squire has acute leukemia and won't be touring with the band for the first time since 1968. Damn.

    1. That's a bummer. The Yes Album was on the vintage reel-to-reel at my buddy's house growing up. We used to crank that sucker up while we partied, belting out "I've seen all good people turn their heads each day So satisfied I'm on my way!" and wailing on our air guitars in sync with Yours Is No Disgrace.

  3. I'd give a backstory, but that might break HIPAA. So, presented without further comment:

    1. It looks like you used the LINK button. Use the IMG button instead and it should work.

        1. I'm not quite sure what you're asking. The WGOM buck is special. The URL for it is hard to remember so I added a shortcode to shortcut the process. Any image pulled from the media library has to be input via the IMG button or the <img> HTML tag.

        2. Your links didn't have any text in them. Looked like
          <a href="URL"></a>
          instead of
          <a href="URL">Link Text</a>

  4. The roommate is a baseball fan (already a big plus, I know). After the Reds-Royals last night, I showed her all my favorite Billy Hamilton highlights and now she's a fan of him in particular. If only I could get her to kick being a Yankees fan.

    1. Maybe a few trips to Target Field will help. Tickets can be had for cheap, especially during the week.

      1. Download the Gametime app, buy on the fly, electronic delivery, scan the barcode on your phone at the gate. It's a can of corn.

  5. I probably shouldn't care about rumors like this, but if the Phillies trade Ben Revere, he could end up with the Angels (Boo!) or Twins (Yay!).
Or maybe the goodness of Ben's heart will break Scioscia's evil heart and he'll repent for his past ways and quit baseball altogether.

    1. As we move closer to the July 31 trade deadline, teams with outfield holes like the Blue Jays, Rays and Twins could turn to Revere as a potential addition.

      (Emphasis mine.)
Uh, I don't think the Twins are going to trade for Revere.

          1. do we have to re-acquire Vanimal to make this happen, or can we send them Nolasco?

      1. I don't think Revere's .662 OPS is going to fix anything. Hicks is at .653 and is reaching base at a higher rate. If anything, trading for Revere would give the Twins an excuse to keep Buxton in the minors longer than needed. And since he's a veteran, Molitor might be more tempted to bat him in the top spot just because he's fast with no power.

  6. The other day the roommate mentioned as we drove by the Amherst Wilder Foundation that working there would pretty much be her dream job. So I was wondering if anyone here had any contacts within that organization that might help the missus? Thanks.

      1. Update: I know people who know people there, so I can hopefully get some names of people she can talk to. Do you know which department she'd want to work in?

  7. Finally fixed the 2014-15 EPL Prediction sheet. Here's the current standings going into "Championship" Sunday. 9/13 people correctly predicted Chelsea to win the title (plus JeffA's random.org entries and Beau's alphabetical picks)

    1. I... I'm having a pretty good showing! Two years in a row! Look out Free, I'm coming for you!

      1. You are. After that Arsenal match today I dropped to 28 points and you moved to 26.

I'm not goi g to go through scenarios but it truly will be Championship Sunday here at the WGOM.

Also 3rd year my "buy a Tottenham kit" bet will go unfulfilled.

    1. I have to wonder if it was really necessary for the cop to wrestle her to the ground.

  8. Our offer: accepted.
    Pre-existing offer: withdrawn.

Now to pay for the dang thing...

      1. Ditto. I have friend who moved his family to St. Louis last fall for work and the Twins play an interleague game there in 3 weeks. Unfortunately, game one is on a Monday evening and, more importantly, time & money are a bit tight this summer.
        Thanks for sharing socal.

        1. It also sucks to be recovering from surgery during that interleague visit. A neighbor had already told me he had tickets for one of the games.

I'd love to take a jaunt to Chattanooga (6½ hours, or even Cedar Rapids, 4 hours), except because wife.

            1. I'm feeling like usual; hopefully that will change a week from tomorrow when the surgery is scheduled 😉 Thanks for asking, though.
