Captain Jack Sparrow has at least one first-choice vote in the Minneapolis mayoral election.
(BTW, thanks to freealonzo for sharing David Brauer's thoughts on the Book of Face the other day. It was for reassurance to me that I wasn't the only one picking up on Hoch's dog-whistling.)
Gimenez also outrighted. I think that makes Garver the designated backup.
Gimenez was the loss I was referring to!
Sean missed his coffee this morning, obviously.
And every previous morning of my life.
I'm guessing you never really "missed" it, then. I know I don't
Day two of my new schedule, which involves solo daycare drop–off and a return to a solitary bus ride. My mornings are shaping up to be a bit less frantic, simply because drop-off is happening about a half-hour later. They’ll also be more lonely; Mrs. Hayes and I have been commuting together for three years now. Even on days when there wasn’t much to say, it was nice to have her there next to me. We’ll still get to go home together in the evenings, though I suspect losing a half-hour of my mornings might have me staying later occasionally.
Happy Election Day!
I wont vote today....because my town has literally zero things on the ballot. Next year is the biggie, with mayor and two council seat along with all the others (Senator, Governor, ect)
Also, next year I am going to be an Election Judge, would have been this year, but again zero things on the ballot.
I've been an election judge now for a few years, and I LOVE it. I mean, the pay isn't great, but I love doing the civic duty, and love seeing all the people come out to vote. And honestly, I don't care who you vote for. I just love seeing good turnout.
Earlier this year I was placed at a precinct with a couple friends of mine, and because it was a lesser election (mostly local), we even got a couple board games in. Was pretty sweet. Probably won't be able to do that in a general election.
No election for me today, though. No voting in our area.
I've actually considered becoming an election judge. Every time I vote it seems like they could use some new blood.
Just applied. Actually, I applied for Equipment Manager (with a fallback as Election Judge). Seems more interesting. And lucrative!
Equipment Manager?
I call Dibs on "Water Boy"!
My town has lost 3 election judges in the last year. I felt a pull of civic duty to join.
No election down here, either. I feel like I'm missing out since everyone I know is getting a sticker, it seems.
I think elections are perhaps the only time a Participation ribbon is meaningful.
My ballot has a school board election and 2 school referendums. Both candidate sites are blocked by my work's filter, so I know basically nothing about them and we homeschool anyway... I'm undecided if I care enough about the referendums to show up and vote against them.
Just remember that even if you home school your kids, having other kids well educated helps you. Plus if your community has good schools, your home will retain and improve it's market value.
Our "village" has excellent schools. While purchasing a home this summer, I was shocked by the disparities in value between it and the city right next door. Like, from the very first street.
How did the demographics between the two compare? We ended up not leaning heavily on school ratings because of their negative correlation to other things we considered more important.
School rankings are misinterpreted by many. The avg ACT score at school x may be higher than school y, but that doesn't mean my kid's ACT score would be higher if going to school x.
We need a better way to judge schools.
I didn't phrase that particularly well. I'm not contemplating voting against the referendums because I'm homeschooling. Instead, it's a reflection on how the district I am in is using their money. I have issues providing lots of extra money when there isn't good demonstration that they can allocate the resources they have effectively.
I voted to raise my taxes today so that somebody else's children can benefit from a good public education. I have no problem investing in my neighbors.
NOICE!!
Baseball Reference Facebook stumper for the day: The only #BlueJays P with more WAR in a season than today's PotD was Clemens. (the link takes you to their page for Rick Porcello)
I enjoyed Napoleon Dynamite quite a bit back in the day. The absurdity of the humor clicked in a big way. I really have no idea how it's aged. I probably shouldn't ever find out.
That's probably it right there. I didn't find it funny at all, but the amount of "OMG, how can you not like it?" comments I'd get pushed me well into hatred territory.
I had the benefit of having no expectations for it, and it clicked so well. That said, it's absolutely the type of movie that I can understand it not working for people. It's freaking quirky. That's the nature of quirks, right?
Same here. I saw it about a month before it went supernova. My friend said he thought I'd like it, but didn't go crazy with the hype.
I thought I would hate it, so having it be enjoyable was a happy surprise.
Typical love it or hate it movie. Personally, I loved it. Great exaggeration of uncomfortable and awkward teen life. I get why people don't like it or don't get it, but I do love technology, always and forever.
1. Carrie (I was looking everywhere BUT the blood soaked dress)
2. Napoleon Dynamite (d'oh)
3. Grease
4. Where the Wild Things Are
5. Scream
6. Caddyshack (the golf trophy on the desk gave it away)
7. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
8. Black Knight
Amélie. Didn’t see the dress as blood soaked, but Tautou wears red throughout the film. The moon/stars seemed to fit the production design of that flick.
I still do these every week. I only had #1, 2, 3, 4, and 7 this week, and was too lazy to look up #8.
Nibbish: I have 3 spots for teams left in next Monday's Bad Luck Cribbage tournament. Play to lose. Shoot me an email if you want in before it fills up. You need to come up with a loser team name. "Skunk Twins, Team 19, No runs, Live to Lose are already taken".
I'll chat with Brad to see if he wants in. Otherwise, I might be able to play with my aunt or maybe even my mom.

Man, this comment makes me miss being near my relatives in a big way.
you realize they're talking about cribbage via internet, right?
Speaking of.. aren't we due for another tournament 'round these parts?
Dec. 5 is shaping up to be a fun day. Looks like during my December work trip to Omaha, my team will be having a holiday lunch and playing "hallway golf", and that evening the IT department is hosting a holiday gathering at a local bowling alley with free bowling, laser tag, go carts, buffet, etc. I'd been curious how the new hips do bowling, so looks like I'll get a chance to find out.
A plane registered to Roy Halladay crashed into the Gulf of Mexico with one confirmed dead. Story developing...
It's him. 🙁
We are saddened by the tragic news that Roy Halladay, 2-time Cy Young Award winner & 8-time All-Star, has died in a plane crash. He was 40. pic.twitter.com/SOFv3bOLyt
I keep telling my dad flying the Icon A5 low over the water is like flying a fighter jet! His response..... I am flying a fighter jet!! pic.twitter.com/30eVjz9eS6
and everywhere they're saying it's Roy that died 🙁
Man, that's way too soon. I remember watching his playoff no-hitter on the scoreboard during Yankee batting practice before game one of the 2010 ALDS. All the Yankees were trying their hardest to watch while avoiding any balls hit by whomever was in the cage.
Posthumous Hall of Fame induction now.
He had a pretty compelling modern case, of course, but I can't think about it right now. He had two kids.
Yeah, definitely a surprise for Buxton considering both Kinsler and Pedroia had won in the past. Both had down years, so I guess they wanted to reward the other guy? Dozier did have the best fielding percentage, fwiw.
uh huh

A devastating loss for the Twins’ bullpen.

Been a while since we did an Invisibles Quiz.
I got 3, but feel like I should have been able to get more.
I've got 6. Can't figure 1 and 2.
edit: Oh, duh. Just #2 now.
Wow.
Well, there we go. That seems really, really obvious in retrospect.
This list has two of my least favorite movies of all time.
Same here on #8. I figured there were a very limited number of options, though. And it wasn't the one with the kid from Rookie of the Year.
The rookie of the year kid was the one I guessed.
That was my first guess for it, too.
I had the benefit of having no expectations for it, and it clicked so well. That said, it's absolutely the type of movie that I can understand it not working for people. It's freaking quirky. That's the nature of quirks, right?

Man, that is awful.
One week ago.
Not the first fatal crash involving that aircraft this year.
and everywhere they're saying it's Roy that died 🙁

That was the first thing I looked up.
Michael Baumann's tribute to Halladay is perfect.
Bux and Dozier with Fielding Grammies.
I get Bux and am happy for Dozier. But, Dozier?
It's the dongers, duh.
Yeah, definitely a surprise for Buxton considering both Kinsler and Pedroia had won in the past. Both had down years, so I guess they wanted to reward the other guy? Dozier did have the best fielding percentage, fwiw.
Surprise for Buxton...? 😉
Dozier. Oops.
I'm thinking Bux was surprised about Dozier, too
