   1. Lots of good stuff here. My wife and I were just talking about the Adele CD yesterday. I went into it expecting something akin to her first album, some good stuff here and there, but lots of filler. It's a damn strong CD front to back with some crazy high points.

      I also love 'Helena Beat', 'Midnight City', and 'Down By the Water', so that's enough common ground to where I'll have to check out the rest of your list when I get home.

10. Ridiculous!
    I just signed in to take advantage of the presale for the Black Keys show. Tickets were to go on sale at 10:00 AM. I was logged in to my ticket purchasing account and at the stroke of 10, I began to attempt my purchase. The "Best Available" in the two lower price ranges was halfway back (away from the stage) and at least halfway up (Row M or higher - A is front row) at Target Center. What's the point of planning part of my day in order to be available to purchase "presale" tickets if all that's available less than a minute after they go on sale is garbage?
    2nd.
    Tickets were listed as $37 - $53 but with all of the associated surcharges and fees, even 2 tickets in the upper deck ($37) would cost me more than $100! I really want to see these guys, but this is ridiculous. I opted not to buy and (hopefully) I can get some off that list of Craig's or the Hub of tix for cheaper. Perhaps I may even be able to get 'em on the street before the show for face value...but I'm not holding my breath. I'm kind-of irritated.

    1. As far as super giant bands go the Black Keys are pretty good. With that said, the Black Keys are not a $100 get-in-the-door band good.

       1. But really who is a 100 dollar get in the door band?

          1. For two tickets? I think my wife and her mom paid somewhere in the range of that to catch that abbysmal NKOTBSB concert last year. Might have even been more.

             I'm thinking my Oasis tickets would've been about that much, had I had to pay for them, but I won them free (though I was strongly considering going, anyway).

             I might drop quite a bit of money to see Sigur Ros.

          2. I had a couple of tickets to see Black Keys in fall of 2010. I paid 30 a head, maybe. They were going on craigslist for $125 the day of the show. As you can imagine, I did not go to see the Black Keys that night.

             As for who is a $100 band? Well, I have no idea.

             1. Here is a nice little write up about the Black Keys from the AV Club. I think what confuses me about the Keys is that they sure are talking a lot of about style lately. I know that whatever hipster garbage I listen is just as, if not more, concerned about their image but it have it laid out so cleanly just leaves me a little confused.

          3. Basically no one. Now that At the Drive-In and Refused are playing again, if they went on a tour together, I'd probably pay absurd amounts of money to go. Pretty much any show I'd pay that much for isn't going to happen for one reason or another.

          4. My thinking is that an outstanding live performance could be worth $50 to me and I love going to concerts. Provided it gets me 2 tickets, I would probably pay $100 to see:

             I think I did pay $100 to see U2 & the Foo Fighters last year.
             In this instance, I most recently saw the Keys at First Ave and paid like $30 for 1 ticket...I've enjoyed every album and concert of theirs thus far, but it irked me to go from $37 face value to well over $100 for no reason. The computer is doing all the work - why a "convenience charge". The venue should be part of the ticket price, not an additional charge, ect. etc...

    2. The service charges Ticketmaster charges on tickets is completely outrageous. I bought tickets to some show at First Ave years ago (Blonde Redhead maybe?), and I was charged an $8 "convenience fee" on a $16 ticket. Seriously?

    3. When I saw the Black Keys in Des Moines, I think it was right around $30. Totally worth it at that price.

       I don't go to a lot of concerts I would otherwise attend because I refuse to pay those extra charges. A lot of local venues here use IowaTix or MidwesTix, which have like $0.50 service fees or something, not 50% of your ticket price, so I go to a lot more local shows.

    4. Speaking of concerts, anybody else interested in going to see The Joy Formidible in March at the Fine Line? I've talked Sheenie into it. Should be well worth the $15 (plus any limited fees which I don't think have existed in the past when I bought them there) and I bet they'll be at a much larger venue next time they're around.

12. Car's in the shop, so the wife drove me to work. I was lilted by the sweet stylings of Bruno Mars. This is fortunate, because I had forgotten just how much I detest the sweet stylings of Bruno Mars.

       1. Yup. The only stipulations are "no boy bands in my car, as long as you dont play the Hold Steady when I'm in your car."

    2. Someone needs to at least tell him that he can't write music. His lyrics are head scratchers and forehead slappers.

    *Notes:
    1. Photek was my favorite jungle producer of the late 90's, daylight second. His style was clinical placement of each sound, often with beats just a split-second after they were expected (maybe just a particular brand of syncopation, but it kept me intrigued), a limited palette of sounds, very little reaching outside of that palette (one song had creaking floorboards, another the sound of empty brass clinking to the ground), and tons of space.

    He produced one phenomenal album Modus Operandi and EP Risc vs. Reward, one great compilation Form & Function, and a varied bag of remixes (Top: EBTG "Single", Bottom: Bowie "I'm Afraid of Americans"). Then his second album is half garage, though only a third garbage with still some decent jungle tracks. And then he basically disappeared for a decade. (My guess was that he began recording dubstep as "Burial" until it appeared that was not the case.)

    He came back with two EPs this year which, while not the same as his late 90's production, do sound like something he could make. They're not really jungle nor dubstep, but definitely influenced by both. (This is not among my favorite tracks from those EPs though.) And now he has a Grammy nomination for a remix of Daft Punk's "Tron" theme.

    2. I think I saw this mentioned in a review of Demdike Stare. Dubby drum sequences with dark, SOTL-type string drones, but it's not doing that much for me. It might work on an album between harder-hitting stuff, but this is the single.

    3. I don't listen to DJ-mixes much, but this is an exception. I pretty much love every mid-90's techno track on this, and Young mixed it live, with some beat juggling and cuts like he was a hip-hop DJ. To me it feels like he's just barely holding on, that things could fall apart at any second.

    5. Free download from Amazon a while back. Go get it if just for Perfect's "Hand Cart Bwoy," the top song from the last decade that makes me regret not keeping up with Reggae.

    E. This is the show at which I first saw Ha Ha Tonka perform (they opened). That someone recorded this gives me hope that there's a tape of HHT's set. Meat Puppets weren't bad either. You can download the whole set at Archive.org.

    1. I don't get the Nicolas Jaar love. You'll find plenty of people on both sides with him, but I just don't like it.
