September 25, 2024: Sore

Getting to that age where, despite not doing anything strenuous, I wake up and everything hurts. Going on my second day of strong back pain without really doing anything to earn it. Good times!

  1. We had a team-building bowling event yesterday, and more than one person just watched, concerned about back or shoulder potential problems. I hadn't bowled in years, but managed a 92/120/122 series, which I'll happily accept.

    1. I've been thinking about trying bowling again. I really enjoy it, and I bowled regularly until the spring of 2020, when COVID hit. A few months later, I was diagnosed with bulging discs in my back. I do exercises for that, and the back is much stronger than it was, which is what's tempting me to try it. My heart says go for it, but my mind reminds me that one wrong move could leave me in pain for a week or more. So we'll see.

    2. I bowled in high school and was pretty good at it. Family and kids had me move away from it as I got older, but I still enjoy playing when I get the chance. I have entertained the occasional thought about joining a league, but I too have noticed that I don't have the stamina to throw 3 games anymore (though I think I could gain it back quickly enough). But also, family life is still fairly busy, and much of my free time now is spent board gaming, which I quite enjoy, and it much easier on the muscles. I don't think I'd want to give that up for a bowling league.

  2. I am persuaded that the Twins making the postseason would simply validate (in the Pohlads’ eyes), the decision to cut payroll. That places me in the odd position of wondering whether it would be best to hope the Twins continue to demonstrate they cannot paper over the limitations self-imposed on this roster. I don’t exactly hope for a corrective reinvestment in the team’s payroll, but as the bar for rewarding mediocrity across the league swings ever lower, I really feel like the only clear signal the ownership is going to get that they kneecapped this team is not clearing the hurdle at all.

But I also know they don’t really care as long as they’re “competitive” for a postseason appearance, so then I wonder why I’m devoting brain space to this organization when even the regular season “ride” isn’t fun because the roller coaster crumbles before reaching the station.

    1. Attendance cratering for the final week is about the only signal the fans have. Missing the postseason, especially with it being a near lock a month ago, is a strong on-field signal. Media criticism, something Gleeman and Hayes have not shied away from, would also help.

    2. I had a nice discussion this past weekend with a family member, and we are both pessimistic that making or missing the playoffs will have any effect whatsoever. It may result in front office/managerial changes, but obviously not ownership changes. Given the way the product has been so quickly screwed up - the TV stuff, the on-field stuff, the roster, etc. - it seems like, at best, ownership needs a wakeup call but no one knows how to reach them, and, at worst, they're awake and either apathetic or incompetent.

  3. The jalapeno became interested in joining a gym back in May, so I joined with him and we've been working with a trainer, mostly focused on lifting weights. (Since I didn't think either he or I had anywhere near enough knowledge to navigate it on our own.) I'm sore pretty regularly, but thankfully I have stronger muscles to go with the soreness!
