October 13, 2024: Floodgates

One of the campaigns somehow got a hold of my email address in the past few days and my inbox is getting absolutely stuffed with their emails. I hope the weather's nice in the spam folder.

  1. The Democrats have my phone number and I have to delete a dozen or more begging texts every day. But I have donated more to candidates this year than in any previous election.

  2. Living in a swing state means being bombarded with bad faith political ads. I’ve “blocked” the same ad from one SuperPAC on YouTube nearly a dozen times, with Google claiming each time I’ll never be shown that ad again.

I used to be really against publicly financed elections (on the basis of not wanting to reward career grifters “public servants” ), but post-Citizens United and considering the leverage of really toxic political financiers, I have come to think political campaigns need to have resource scarcity and resource management forced upon them.

    1. SCOTUS won't allow constraints on spending because free speech, but we could limit the amount of time you have to campaign and spend all your patronage money. Our endless campaign cycles are exhausting and caustic.

  3. I was surprised to see a Ted Cruz ad during the Texas-Oklahoma game yesterday. I suppose large portions of the state of Texas were watching, but it still seems odd to pay for a national commercial for a non-national election.

  4. I agreed to be a hill runner for the National Restaurant Association (the other NRA) and have been assigned to Michelle Fischbach. She is in the US house of representatives. Since I have had some communication back and forth with her office, I now get assaulted hourly for money or support. As I have also donated to the other side in the past, I am getting hit from both parties for my money and support. I am tired of this election cycle in particular. That and living in an area that hosts thousands of people who buy into many of the silly conspiracy theories I have been unfriending and muting sooooo many people on social media. One of my favorite employees is such a good kid, but the other day he was telling other cooks that the earth is flat and that NASA is fooling us all. Sigh.
