Yep, that explains it pretty well. In our orbit we are going very fast sideways relative to the Sun, and if you don’t slow down, you will keep going sideways and not be able to hit the Sun.
You need to get rid of a lot of angular momentum in order to hit the Sun, and that takes a lot of rocket fuel.
This is also why planets can exist, and therefore why we are here. If it was easy for orbiting material to fall into the Sun, the gas cloud that formed our solar system would have all collapsed into the Sun. Because of angular momentum, some material stayed in a disk around the forming Sun, and that disk eventually became the planets.
With the right kind of flattery, you might be able to convince Elmo that he should be the first human on Mars.

I take more joy over Packers losing than Vikings winning so NFL playoffs already a net positive for me.
I had a real hard time with the Steelers v. Ravens game. I've hated the Steelers a lot longer, more than half a century, but I hate the Ravens with the wolverine intensity of a scorned woman.
I was hoping for the Packers to win if only because the Vikings would get them at home if they win tonight (I think that's how it works). I didn't feel good about it, but that was my hope.
If Packers had won yesterday, they'd play at Detroit next week. Vikes could've hosted Pack in the NFC championship game if both teams had won out.
