  1. On our way to the new Raising Cane's in Janesville last night I stopped to fill up the van. After filling up, damn thing wouldn't start, so we had to call a friend to come to jump it. I nearly got frostbite trying to connect to the ground bolt, but we got it running and I was able to pop over to O'Reilly's and get a new battery, which I get to try to install today in the cold, albeit warmer weather.

Moral of the story: probably a good idea to have a battery tester handy to check it each winter.

      1. I'm sure O'Reilly's would do that as well, but it was 8:00 at night and I have the ability to swap them out, so just getting the battery and getting the van home was my goal. Of course, after I installed it today I realized it was the wrong battery, but was good enough to get me back to the store to swap it out for the correct one. We're all good now!

        1. I wasn't suggesting for last night, just saying if wanting to check pre-winter. Those auto stores have lots of helpful tools for the asking -- they even can tell you which tire pressure sensors have failed, if for example your wife's car doesn't identify WHICH tire is low and might have, say, three bad tire pressure sensors.

            1. We bought a new vehicle with all the fixings a few years ago. I was so excited to finally have a tire pressure indicator that should me which tire was low. Alas, they decided to keep that feature for…no other available packages.

    1. I gave my Subaru a “glow-up” back in October. My mechanic switched it over to running diesel engine oil and I installed a new battery in a Farm & Fleet parking lot on my way home from his shop. The old one lasted 80,000 miles and definitely would have not survived this cold snap.

      1. Our Subaru wouldn't start the other day when we were below zero. Fired right up with the portable battery charger (boy, those things are handy), but won't hold a charge. Headed to O'Reillys at lunch to get a new battery. Car still has the original Subaru battery, only got about 10 years out of it.

      1. We noticed the range difference for our year in Minnesota compared to California, too. It was still plenty to get where we wanted to go, but definitely needed more frequent charging.

Our current “cold” weather (lows in the mid 40’s) doesn’t make enough of a difference for me to notice when driving locally, but even that temp is enough to see a range drop on long road trips.

    2. I've started replacing batteries proactively with a calendar reminder every 5 years. The reminder for our van came up this fall and I decided to kick the can another year. So now I'm biting my fingernails for the next couple months. 😬

  2. Franz Ferdinand has a new album out called The Human Fear . I've given it a couple listens and its pretty good! The second half kind of loses pace but finishes strong. If you like Tonight: Franz Ferdinand or Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action you'll probably like this offering.
    The Doctor

    1. That 3 year wait was loooooong. I rewatched the last episode of season 1, figuring that was enough to jog my memory. When they did the recap before the first episode of season 2, there were a whole bunch of story lines I didn’t remember at all, so perhaps a full rewatch would have been better.
