As I used to smoke long ago, I notice these things, so I realized for the first time since I've started here (and almost surely back to the founding of the company), we weren't employing any smokers; the last one left last week. But, the tarred gods in the heavens wouldn't stand for that, so a new smoker just started today.

Dueling Cups by the same author. Nice.
So I'll spoiler the rest in case there is anyone who waits for the series to see how they do (May 15 premier), but Wrexham FC:
What about Zynners? I am shocked by how many people our age have fallen for “What if snuff pouches, but Jolly Rancher flavored?”
My daughter and son-in-law were supposed to move into their apartment two weeks ago but the place smelled like cigarettes so bad they didn't move in. They complained and the managers basically blew them off with just an offer to do another cleaning, so they consulted a lawyer. Two emails later they got a commitment for a full, professional smoke remediation, cleaning of the HVAC unit, etc. If it's not satisfactory after that, they'll give them a different unit. They hope the place is ready for move-in by this weekend, but I wouldn't hold my breath. But they did learn one of the basic lessons of life in America - lawyers are leverage.
If it smells like cigarettes you probably should hold your breath...

Couldn't agree more, I have numerous examples but the best was when my oldest had an employment issue and one letter from an attorney that they were taking up the case got an immediate, company wide change in a policy.
So, I am blaming whoever raised the "Google is killing older Nest models" recently for the flood of articles I am now seeing.
We have two 2nd Gen Nests that came with the house. I guess they must be about 10 years old, as the immediately previous owners were only in the house about 4-5 years and we are now at 5.5.
So the things are approaching end-of-life. Rhu, tell me again about Ecobee?
My guess is that we will deal with the Nests as dumb(ish) thermostats for awhile. My longer-term plan is to replace our furnace/AC units with heat pumps. I'd really rather not invest in thermostats that end up being incompatible with new HVAC equipment.
On the plus side, heat pumps are popular so many new thermostats will already support them.
The Ecobee we got is the first smart 'stat we've had, so I don't have anything to compare it to. With that in mind, we have been quite happy with it. The app is pretty user friendly, it looks nice enough on the wall and it was really easy to install with guidance on wire connections through the app. Its also a product from a company that isn't Google.
Man, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is really scrapping the bottom of the barrel if Bad Company and Chubby Checker can get in.
