Minor Details: Games of May 24

NORFOLK TIDES 12, ST. PAUL SAINTS 1 IN ST. PAUL (GAME 1)

It was scoreless until the fourth, when Mike Ford homered to give St. Paul a 1-0 lead.  That must have woken Norfolk up, because they scored twelve runs in the next three innings.  Four walks, a hit batsman, and two singles produced four runs in the fifth.  Fernando Peguero hit a two-run double in a three-run sixth.  Vimael Machin hit a three-run homer in a five-run seventh.  Norfolk only out-hit St. Paul 8-6 but drew nine walks.

Batters:  Mike Ford was 2-for-3 with a home run, his eighth.  Mickey Gasper was 2-for-4.  Emmanuel Rodriguez was 0-for-0 with three walks.

Pitchers:  Starter Marco Raya had by far his best game of the season, striking out seven in four perfect innings.  Infielder Anthony Prato came on to get the last out of the seventh.

Opponents:  Jordyn Adams was 2-for-3 with a walk, three runs, and an RBI.  Francisco Peguero was 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs.  Coby Mayo was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Vimael Machin was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer (his fourth) and a walk.

ST. PAUL SAINTS 6, NORFOLK TIDES 4 IN ST. PAUL (GAME 2)

T. T. Bowens doubled home a run in the top of the first, but Mickey Gasper homered in the bottom of the first.  Chadwick Tromp hit a two-run homer in the top of the second, but Patrick Winkel singled home a run in the bottom of the second and Gasper homered again in the third to make it 3-3.  Tromp homered again in the fourth, but Anthony Prato hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to put St. Paul in the lead to stay.  Ryan Fitzgerald singled home an insurance run in the sixth.

Batters:  Edouard Julien was 2-for-2 with a walk.  Patrick Winkel was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Mickey Gasper was 2-for-4 with two home runs, his eighth and ninth.  Anthony Prato was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, his third.

Pitchers:  Starter Andrew Morris pitched six innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and one walk and striking out five.  Richard Lovelady pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and striking out one.

SAN ANTONIO MISSIONS 5, WICHITA WIND SURGE 2 IN SAN ANTONIO

All the runs were scored in the sixth inning.  Wichita got two in the top of the inning, but Marcos Castanon hit a two-run double to tie it, an error scored the go-ahead run, and San Antonio scored two more for insurance.  Wichita got a hit in each of the last three innings but could do nothing with it.

Batters:  Kala'i Rosario was 2-for-4.

Pitchers:  Christian MacLeod struck out five and walked three in four shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Jarret Whorff struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.  Joel Cesar pitched a scoreless inning, striking out one.

Opponents:  Francisco Acuna was 2-for-4 with a triple, a walk, a run, and an RBI.  Romeo Sanabria was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Devin Ortiz was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Emmanuel Pinales pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk and striking out four.

CEDAR RAPIDS KERNELS 12, FORT WAYNE TINCAPS 4 IN FORT WAYNE

Fort Wayne scored two in the third, but Kaelen Culpepper delivered a two-run single in a three-run fourth to put Cedar Rapids up 3-2.  The Kernels then got a touchdown and an extra point, scoring seven times in the fifth.  They drew four walks and hit three singles and a double in the inning.  That put them ahead 10-2 and essentially decided the game.

Batters:  Kaelen Culpepper was 2-for-4 with two walks, a run, and two RBIs.  Nate Baez was 2-for-4 with a double, two walks, a run, and two RBIs.  Jaime Ferrer was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

Pitchers:  Starter Chase Chaney struck out seven in six innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and three walks.  Spencer Bengard pitched a perfect inning, striking out one.  Gabriel Yanez struck out three and walked one in a scoreless inning.

FORT MYERS MIGHTY MUSSELS 5, LAKELAND FLYING TIGERS 4 IN LAKELAND (10 INNINGS)

Fort Myers scored two in the top of the first, but Bryce Rainer hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to tie it.  Jose Rodriguez homered in the third, but Lakeland scored in the fourth to tie it.  Maddux Houghton homered in the seventh, but Carson Rucker delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to tie it.  Dameury Pena singled home a run in the tenth, and this time Lakeland couldn't tie it, as they never advanced the Manfred Man beyond where he was placed.

Batters:  Maddux Houghton was 2-for-3 with a home run (his third) and a walk.  Jose Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth), a walk, and two RBIs.

Pitchers:  Starter Dasan Hill struck out five in 2.2 innings, but gave up two runs on two hits and two walks.  Jason Doktorcyzk struck out six in four innings, giving up two runs on five hits and no walks.  Zander Sechrist pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.  Hunter Hoopes pitched two shutout innings, striking out one and walking one.

FCL RED SOX 5, FCL TWINS 3 AT TWINS (7 INNINGS)

Johanfran Garcia singled home a run in the third and Yohander Linares hit a two-run single in the fourth to give the Red Sox a 3-0 lead.  The Twins scored one in the fifth, but the Red Sox got it back in the sixth on a Jhoan Peguero home run.  Jayson Bass hit a two-run double in the sixth to cut the lead to 4-3, but that was as much as the Twins could do.  The Red Sox got an insurance run in the seventh and that was that.

Batters:  None.  The Twins had three hits.

Pitchers:  Starter Joel Garcia struck out four in three innings, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks.  Aiberson Ventura pitched a perfect inning.

Opponents:  Yohander Linares was 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs.  Jhoan Peguero was 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk, and two runs.  Yoelvin Chirino struck out four in 3.2 innings, giving up one run on one hit and two walks.

It was 1-1 through eight, as Mickey Gasper singled home a run in the third and Iowa tied the score in the sixth.  Will Holland hit a two-run homer in the ninth to win it for St. Paul.

WICHITA WIND SURGE 15, ARKANSAS TRAVELERS 7 IN WICHITA

Wichita scored three in the first and one in the third to take a 4-0 lead.  Arkansas came back, scoring one in the fourth and getting a two-run double from Jared Sundstrom in a three-run fifth to tie it 4-4.  Wichita then took control of the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring a touchdown plus the extra point.  Tanner Schobel hit a three-run double and Kyler Fedco hit a two-run homer in a seven-run inning that put the game out of reach.  The lead went to 14-4 before Arkansas put up three in the eighth to make the final score look a little better

Ian Petrutz hit a two-run homer in a four-run first that put Peoria in control of the game early.  It was 5-0 when Cedar Rapids finally scored on a double by Brandon Winokur in the eighth.  Peoria added two more in the ninth.

Batters:  None.  Cedar Rapids had five hits.

Pitchers:  Chase Chaney settled down after the first, pitching five innings and giving up five runs on nine hits and a walk and striking out three.  Eston Stull pitched a perfect inning, striking out one.  Gabriel Yanez struck out five in two perfect innings.

Dameury Pena hit a home run in a three-run first.  Jupiter scored single runs in the first and third to cut the lead to 3-2, but Fort Myers put up another three-spot in the fifth.  Jupiter got two back in the sixth to cut the margin to 6-4, but that was as close as they would get.  Fort Myers scored single runs in the seventh and eighth.

Batters:  Rayne Doncon was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs.  Daniel Pena was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, and two RBIs.  Dameury Pena hit a home run, his second.

Pitchers:  Jason Doktorczyk pitched 4.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks and striking out three.  Devin Kirby pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.

Carson McCusker hit a two-run homer in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie.  The Saints added three more in the eighth as McCusker and Mickey Gasper homered.  McCusker was 3-for-4 with two home runs (his eighth and ninth) and three RBIs.  Gasper was 2-for-4 with a home run (his third) and two runs.  David Festa struck out seven in 5.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits and no walks.  Travis Adams struck out four in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up three hits.

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS NATURALS 5, WICHITA WIND SURGE 4 IN NORTHWEST ARKANSAS

Wichita led 4-2 after six, but Jac Caglianone hit a three-run homer in the seventh to give Northwest Arkansas the victory.  Aaron Sabato was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Darren Bowen pitched three innings, giving up two runs on one hit and four walks and striking out one.  Pierson Ohl pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits.

Rained out.  Will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

SPRINGFIELD CARDINALS 5, WICHITA WIND SURGE 2 IN WICHITA

Springfield just eased out to a lead, scoring one in the first on a force out, one in the second on a Chase Davis RBI single, and two in the third, one a Dakota Harris RBI single and the other on a double play.  With the score 4-0, Wichita finally got on the board in the sixth on a run-scoring double by Rubel Cespedes.  Each team would score once more, with Miguel Ugueto knocking in a run with a single in the eighth and Tanner Schobel bringing one home with a single in the ninth.  Wichita had the bases loaded with two out, but a ground out ended the game.

Batters:  Rubel Cespedes was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Kyler Fedco was 2-for-4 with a run.

It looked good early.  Nate Baez drove in two with a single and Kaelen Culpepper followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0 after two.  Wisconsin responded with a Matthew Wood grand slam in the third to take a 4-3 lead.  Danny De Andrade singled home a run in the bottom of the third, and we were tied 4-4.  It stayed there until the eighth, when run scoring singles by Yhoswar Garcia and Eduardo Garcia put Wisconsin up 6-4.  They then put the game away with a seven-run ninth.  They had a triple, a double, two singles, three walks, a hit batsman, and a balk in the inning.

BattersDanny De Andrade was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and an RBI.  Billy Amick was 2-for-4 with a walk, a run, and an RBI.  Kaelen Culpepper was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Gabriel Gonzalez was 2-for-5 with a run.

Well, maybe not this one.  Iowa led 6-0 after three.  It was 7-1 after six, but Iowa scored nine in the seventh.  Iowa hit eight home runs in the game.  Carson McCusker was 2-for-4 with two home runs, his third and fourth.  Armando Alvarez hit a three-run homer.  Jeferson Morales was 1-for-2 with a home run and two walks.  Starter Andrew Morris pitched 3.2 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits and a walk, striking out six.

TULSA DRILLERS 5, WICHITA WIND SURGE 4 IN TULSA (14 INNINGS)

It was 1-1 through eight.  Each team scored two in the ninth and one in the eleventh.  Yeiner Fernandez singled home the deciding run.  Tyler Dearden was 4-for-6.  Kyler Fedco was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer (his second) and two walks.  Chase Chaney pitched 4.2 innings, giving up an unearned run on six hits and no walks and striking out one.  Angel Macuare struck out four in 2.1 perfect innings.  John Stankiewicz pitched 2.2 innings, giving up an unearned run on no hits and three walks, striking out two.
