Minor Details: Games of May 6

ST. PAUL SAINTS 6, BUFFALO BISONS 2 IN ST. PAUL

Carson McCusker hit a two-run homer in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie.  The Saints added three more in the eighth as McCusker and Mickey Gasper homered.  McCusker was 3-for-4 with two home runs (his eighth and ninth) and three RBIs.  Gasper was 2-for-4 with a home run (his third) and two runs.  David Festa struck out seven in 5.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits and no walks.  Travis Adams struck out four in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up three hits.

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS NATURALS 5, WICHITA WIND SURGE 4 IN NORTHWEST ARKANSAS

Wichita led 4-2 after six, but Jac Caglianone hit a three-run homer in the seventh to give Northwest Arkansas the victory.  Aaron Sabato was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Darren Bowen pitched three innings, giving up two runs on one hit and four walks and striking out one.  Pierson Ohl pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits.

CEDAR RAPIDS 8, BELOIT SKY CARP 0 IN BELOIT

Cedar Rapids scored single runs in the first and third, then took control with a four-run fifth.  Brandon Winokur had a two-run single in the inning.  Winokur was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.  Danny De Andrade had three RBIs.  Chase Chaney struck out six in six shutout innings, giving up seven hits and no walks.  Samuel Perez struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two hits.  Jacob Wosinski pitched a perfect inning, striking out one.

FORT MYERS MIGHTY MUSSELS 13, DUNEDIN BLUE JAYS 12 IN FORT MYERS (11 INNINGS)

Fort Myers led 6-0 after two, but by the top of the fifth it was 6-5 and after seven it was tied 9-9.  Each team scored one in the tenth.  Bryce Arnold hit a two-run homer in the top of the eleventh, but Fort Myers scored three in the bottom of the eleventh.  They had one hit, a single, but got two walks, an error, and a passed ball, with the deciding run scoring on a sacrifice fly.  Jay Thomason was 3-for-5 with a walk and three runs.  Yohander Martinez was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.  Dameury Pena was 2-for-3.  Poncho Ruiz was 2-for-5 with a double, a walk, two runs, and three RBIs.  Byron Chourio was 2-for-6 with a home run and three runs.  Ben Ross struck out four in three innings, giving up one run on one hit.  Hunter Hoopes pitched 1.2 perfect innings, striking out one.

FCL TWINS 7, FCL PIRATERS 3 AT TWINS

The Twins scored two in the third on three walks, a hit batsman, and a sacrifice fly to take a 4-3 lead.  They added two in the fourth and one in the fifth, scoring seven runs on three hits and ten walks.  Eduardo Beltre was 0-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs.  Miguel Cordero pitched 3.2 innings, giving up three runs on four hits and no walks, striking out three.  Ruddy Gomez struck out all four men he faced.  Will Armbruester struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

ST. PAUL SAINTS 3, COLUMBUS CLIPPERS 2 IN COLUMBUS (10 INNINGS)

Finally able to get a game in, the Saints decided to play a little extra to make it worth their while.  Petey Halpin singles home a run in the second and Will Brennan homered in the third to make it 2-0 Columbus.  But our own Will, Will Holland, homered in the fifth to get St. Paul on the board and Mike Ford singled home a run in the sixth to tie it 2-2.  It stayed there until the tenth, when a sacrifice fly plated Manfred Man Anthony Prato.  Columbus was retired in order in the bottom of the inning and the good guys won.  Columbus has twelve hits, but stranded thirteen and went 1-for-12 with men in scoring position.

Batters:  Ryan Fitzgerald was 2-for-4.  Will Holland hit a home run.

Pitchers:  Zebby Matthews struck out five in four innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks.  Michael Tonkin (remember him?) struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Darren McCaughan pitched three shutout innings, giving up four hits and a walk and striking out two.  Brady Feigl struck out two in a perfect ninth.

Opponents:  Johnathan Rodriguez was 4-for-5 with a double.  Will Brennan was 3-for-4 with a home run (his third) and a walk.  Kody Huff was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and a run.  Petey Halpin was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Parker Messick struck out nine in five innings, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks.  Zak Kent struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

FRISCO ROUGHRIDERS 6, WICHITA WIND SURGE 1 IN FRISCO

Keyber Rodriguez singled home a run in the first and tripled one home in the third to give Frisco a 2-0 lead.  Rubel Cespedes had an RBI single to get Wichita on the board.  It was all Frisco from there, however, as they got two in the sixth and Luis Mieses hit a two-run single in the eighth.  As Mr. Jinx used to say, "I hate those Mieses to pieces!"

Batters:  Tyler Dearden was 2-for-3.  Rubel Cespedes was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Pitchers:  Christian MacLeod pitched three innings, giving up two runs on five hits and no walks and striking out one.  John Stankiewicz struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings.

Opponents:  Keyber Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs, and a run.  Luis Mieses was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.  Sebastian Walcott was 2-for-4 with two runs.  Florencio Serrano pitched three perfect innings, striking out one.  Ryan Lobus struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Larson Kindreich pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.

Stats:  Tyler Dearden is batting .327 with an OPS of .858.  Kyler Fedco has an OPS of .989.  Aaron Sabato has an OPS of .876.  Mike Paredes has an ERA of 0.77.  Christian MacLeod has an ERA of 2.00.  John Stankiewicz has an ERA of 3.18.  Angel Macuare has an ERA of 3.27.

CEDAR RAPIDS KERNELS 9, SOUTH BEND CUBS 1 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Carter Trice put the Cubs ahead in a trice, delivering a first-inning RBI single.  Kaelen Culpepper homered in the third to tie it 1-1 and Kevin Maitan doubled home a run in the fourth to give Cedar Rapids the lead.  The Kernels then scored five in the fifth on six singles to take control of the game.  Jose Salas hit a two-run double in the eighth.

Batters:  Khadim Diaw was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.  Nate Baez was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run.  Kaelen Culpepper was 2-for-5 with a home run (his second) and two runs.

Pitchers:  Jeremy Lee pitched five innings, giving up one run on five hits and no walks and striking out four.  Spencer Bengard pitched four shutout innings, giving up four hits and no walks and striking out two.

Opponents:  Carter Trice was 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Ivan Brethowr was 2-for-4.  Reginald Preciado was 2-for-4.  South Bend doesn't win much, but they have some players with cool names.

TAMPA TARPONS 12, FORT MYERS MIGHTY MUSSELS 4 IN TAMPA

It started well.  Fort Myers took a 4-0 lead in the second on two-run homers by Miguel Briceno and Jefferson Valladares.  But Tampa matched them with a four-run third, took the lead with two in the fourth, added one more in the fifth, and put the game out of reach with a five-run seventh.  Each team made four errors, but Fort Myers went 2-for-17 with men in scoring position.  Twins Baseball!

Batters:  Jay Thomason was 2-for-5 with two doubles and a run.  Miguel Briceno was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk.  Jefferson Valladares was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer.

Pitchers:  Starter Dylan Questad struck out five in three innings, but allowed four runs on six hits and a walk.  Xavier Kolhasser struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

ST. PAUL SAINTS AT COLUMBUS CLIPPERS (2)

Both games were canceled due to rain.

FRISCO ROUGHRIDERS 5, WICHITA WIND SURGE 2 IN FRISCO

Aaron Zavala led off the bottom of the first with a home run and Frisco led the rest of the way.  They scored two in the second and one in the third to build a 4-1 lead.  Ben Ross homered to give Wichita a run in the fourth and Jorel Ortega homered in the ninth.  It was the second home run of the season for each.  Ricky Castro pitched 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk and striking out one.  Michael Martinez struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.  Jarret Whorff struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

CEDAR RAPIDS KERNELS 8, SOUTH BEND CUBS 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

RBI singles by Gabriel Gonzalez in the first and Kyle DeBarge in the second gave Cedar Rapids a 2-0 lead.  South Bend got one back in the third, but Cedar Rapids scored three in the fourth and got a two-run single from Gonzalez in the fifth to go up 7-1.  Kaelen Culpepper was 4-for-5 with two runs.  Gonzalez was 3-for-4 with four RBIs.  Danny De Andrade was 2-for-5 with a triple, a double, a run, and an RBI.  Jose Olivares struck out six in three innings, giving up one run on two hits and four walks.  Logan Whitaker pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out one.  Paulshawn Pasqualotto struck out two and walked two in two shutout innings.

TAMPA TARPONS 12, FORT MYERS MIGHTY MUSSELS 5 IN TAMPA

A pair of bases-loaded walks gave Fort Myers a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.  Owen Cobb homered in the bottom of the third to put Tampa on the board, and Dillon Lewis hit a three-run homer to cap a four-run fifth that put Tampa in the lead to stay.  Fort Myers never got closer than two runs after that.  Maddux Houghton was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Dasan Hill pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a walk, but then was removed due to injury.  We could not quickly find out any details.

FCL TWINS 4, FCL RED SOX 3 AT RED SOX (7 INNINGS)

The Twins scored all of their runs in the sixth to overcome a 1-0 deficit in the 2025 debut of the FCL.  The runs came on a grand slam by Eduardo Beltre.  The Red Sox came back with two in the seventh and had the tying run on third when the game ended.  It does not appear to have been a rain-shortened game--perhaps seven-inning games are a thing in the FCL this year.  Joel Garcia struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Mitch Mueller struck out four in four innings, giving up one run on five hits and a walk.

ST. PAUL SAINTS 6, COLUMBUS CLIPPERS 4 IN COLUMBUS (GAME 1–5 INNINGS)

Jeferson Morales hit a two-run homer in the first.  It was 3-1 after two, but Columbus got three in the third to take a 4-3 lead.  Not to worry, though, as Mike Ford led off the fourth with a homer to tie it.  Morales struck again in the fifth, again leading off the inning with a home run, and Anthony Prato had an RBI single for an insurance run.  Rain came in the top of the sixth, and the game was over with a Saints win.

BattersMike Ford was 2-for-2 with a home run (his sixth), a walk, and two runs.  Jeferson Morales was 2-for-3 with two home runs (his third and fourth) and three RBIs.

PitchersMarco Raya pitched three innings, allowing four runs on three hits and five walks.  Travis Adams struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up three hits.

Opponents:  Petey Halpin was 2-for-3 with a run.

FRISCO ROUGHRIDERS 3, WICHITA WIND SURGE 2 IN FRISCO

Abimelec Ortiz hit a two-run homer in the third to give Frisco a 2-0 lead.  Noah Cardenas singled home a run in the fourth to get Wichita on the board, but Frisco got the run back in the fifth.  Jake Rucker singled home a run in the sixth to again cut the margin to one.  Wichita had the bases loaded with one out, but a line drive double play ended the inning.  They would again get a man into scoring position with one out in the eighth, but a pair of fly outs ended the inning.  Wichita had thirteen hits, but only two runs.  They stranded ten and went 2-for-9 with men in scoring position.  Twins baseball!

BattersBen Ross was 3-for-4 with a double.  Ricardo Olivar was 3-for-5.  Kala’i Rosario was 2-for-4 with a run.

PitchersConnor Prielipp pitched 2.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk.  Aaron Rozek struck out five in 4.1 innings, giving up one run on four hits and no walks.  Cody Laweryson struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opponents:  Alejandro Osuna was 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Cameron Cauley was 2-for-3.  Abimelec Ortiz hit a home run, his fourth.

SOUTH BEND CUBS 8, CEDAR RAPIDS KERNELS 4 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

South Bend scored two in the first and two in the second to take a 4-0 lead.  Kyle DeBarge hit a two-run homer in the third to cut the lead in half.  But South Bend added two more in the fifth and one in the seventh to go up 7-2.  An error gave Cedar Rapids two in the eighth, but that was as close as they could come.

BattersKhadim Diaw was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Nate Baez was 2-for-4.  Gabriel Gonzalez was 2-for-5 with a run.  Kyle DeBarge hit a two-run homer, his fourth.

PitchersTanner Hall struck out three in 1.2 innings, but allowed four runs on four hits and three walks.  Samuel Perez pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, striking out one and walking three.

It was scoreless through two, but Fort Myers scored either one or two runs in each of innings three through eight.

Jonathan Rodriguez hit a two-run homer in the first, but St. Paul came back with one in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie it.  Mike Ford then hit a two-run homer in the sixth for the deciding runs.  Carson McCusker was 2-for-3 with a home run (his seventh) and two runs.  Anthony Prato was 2-for-3 with a home run (his second).  Mike Ford hit a home run, his fourth.  David Festa struck out seven in six innings, giving up two runs on three hits and no walks.  Richard Lovelady pitched a perfect inning, striking out one.

Ricardo Olivar hit a two-run single in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie and added two more in the eighth.  Frisco scored one in the eighth and two more in the ninth and had the tying run on base with two out in the ninth.  Ricardo Olivar was 2-for-5 with a double, a run, and two RBIs.  Christian MacLeod pitched three shutout innings, giving up no hits and two walks and striking out two.  Jarret Whorff struck out three in three innings, giving up one run on one hit.

Carson McCusker hit a two-run double in the first inning to give St. Paul the early lead.  A sacrifice fly made it 3-0 after two.  It stayed there until the fifth, when Nick Yorke got Indianapolis on the board with a two-run single.  Mike Ford singled home a run in the seventh to make it 4-2, but Indianapolis responded with a pinch-hit home run by Nick Solak in the eighth to cut the lead to one again.  Ryan Fitzgerald doubled home a run in the bottom of the eighth, however, and this time Indianapolis had no answer.  They did get the tying run up to bat with one out in the ninth, but their last two men went out.

BattersRoyce Lewis was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.  Anthony Prato was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs.  Ryan Fitzgerald was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, a run, and an RBI.  Carson McCusker was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Jeferson Morales was 2-for-5.

Jeremy Rivas hit a three-run homer in the first to put Springfield up early.  Wichita tied it in the third on a bases-loaded walk and a two-run single by Rubel Cespedes.  An RBI single and a sacrifice fly in the fourth put Springfield back in front 5-3.  Andrew Cossetti homered in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-4.  From there, however, it was all Springfield.  Ramon Mendoza homered in a two-run sixth, Miguel Ugueto hit a two-run homer in a four-run seventh, and Carlos Linares singled home a run in the ninth.

Danny De Andrade homered in the second to put Cedar Rapids on the board, but a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth tied it 1-1.  In the bottom of the fifth, however, Kaelen Culpepper hit a three-run homer to put Cedar Rapids in the lead to stay.  A ground out scored a run in the seventh, and Culpepper hit a two-run single in a three-run eighth that sealed the victory.

Fort Myers scored early and often, getting all ten runs in the first three innings.  Three of them came in the first, as Byron Chourio led off the game with a triple, Jose Salas followed with an RBI single, and Jay Thomason followed that with a three-run homer.  A wild pitch and a sacrifice fly brought home two in the second.  Clearwater got their lone run in the bottom of the second on a Raider Tello homer, but Fort Myers responded with five in the third.  Maddux Houghton singled home one, and later in the inning Salas hit a grand slam.  Three Fort Myers pitchers took it from there, limiting Clearwater to just four hits for the game.

OMAHA STORM CHASERS 5, ST. PAUL SAINTS 3 IN ST. PAUL

Omaha scored one in the second, but Emmanuel Rodriguez hit a two-run double to put St. Paul ahead 2-1 in the third.  The lead held up until the eighth, when Omaha plated four on two walks, an error, a double, and a single.  St. Paul got one back in the ninth but did not get the tying run on base.

Batters:  Emmanuel Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Pitchers:  Darren McCaughan pitched four innings, giving up an unearned run on six hits and two walks and striking out three.  Anthony Misiewicz pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit and striking out one.  Richard Lovelady pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk and striking out one.  Ryan Jensen pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, walking one and striking out one.

WICHITA WIND SURGE 5, MIDLAND ROCKHOUNDS 2 IN WICHITA

Brennan Milone homered in the top of the third, but Allan Cerda tripled and scored in the bottom of the third to tie it 1-1. Again a four-run inning decided things, as Wichita then scored four in the fifth to take control of the game.  Cerda doubled to lead off the inning, but he was still on second with two out.  Then came an infield single, a walk, and a wild pitch to give Wichita the lead.  Jake Rucker followed with a two-run single and Andrew Cossetti delivered an RBI double.  Midland scored one in the eighth but did not threaten to get back into the game.

Batters:  Jake Rucker was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.  Allan Cerda was 2-for-4 with a triple, a double, and two runs.  Kyler Fedco was 2-for-4.

Pitchers:   Darren Bowen struck out four in four innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk.  Mike Paredes struck out three and walked two in three shutout innings, giving up no hits.

Opponents:  Colby Halter was 2-for-4.  Brennan Milone was 1-for-5 with a home run.  Junior Perez was 1-for-3 with a homer and a walk.  Wander Guante pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out one.

CEDAR RAPIDS KERNELS 10, BELOIT SKY CARP 7 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Cedar Rapids scored seven runs in the first inning.  Two singles and a walk loaded the bases, Gabriel Gonzalez hit a two-run single, a balk moved the runners up, Khadim Diaw singled home a run, an error brought another run home, Danny De Andrade had an RBI double and scored on a Misael Urbina single, a hit batsman and a Kyle DeBarge RBI single rounded out the inning.  It was 9-3 after four and stayed there through seven.  Beloit closed to 9-6 in the eighth, and each team scored one more run after that.  Beloit stranded fifteen runners and went 2-for-15 with men in scoring position.  Cedar Rapids stranded fourteen and went 5-for-19 with men in scoring position.

Batters:  Brandon Winokur was 2-for-4 with two walks, a run, and an RBI.  Danny De Andrade was 2-for-5 with two doubles, a run, and an RBI.  Kyle DeBarge was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs.

Pitchers:  Starter Tanner Hall pitched three innings, allowing three runs on five hits and five walks and striking out one.  Samuel Perez pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks.

TAMPA TARPONS 4, FORT MYERS MIGHTY MUSSELS 2 IN FORT MYERS

Again a big first inning decided things, but this time it went the wrong way.  Tampa scored all four of their runs in the first and made them hold up.  Parks Harber parked one, hitting a three-run homer, and Dillon Lewis followed with a solo shot.  Fort Myers scored one in the sixth and one in the ninth.  They brought the tying run up to bat with one out in the ninth, but a pair of strikeouts ended the game.

Batters:  Peyton Carr was 1-for-4 with a home run.

Pitchers:  Starter Xavier Kolhasser struck out six in three innings, but allowed four runs on three hits and three walks.  Devin Kirby struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks.  Zander Sechrist struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk.  Hunter Hoopes struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opponents:  Parks Harber was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer (his second) and a triple.  Dillon Lewis was 2-for-4 with a home run.  Brian Sanchez was 2-for-5 with a double.  Gage Ziehl pitched 4.1 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and no walks and striking out two.
