Claude Debussy – Syrinx

Let's wrap things up with a piece for solo flute that I have fond memories of playing. This is Andreas Blau performing; recorded at the Berlin Philharmonie, 22 March 2014.

A little interesting backstory courtesy of the LA Philharmonic: "Syrinx is the Greek name for the widespread folk instrument made of end-blown reeds, more commonly called 'panpipes.' Both names come from the Greek myth about the nymph Syrinx, who escaped the pursuit of the lecherous satyr Pan by turning herself into a bunch of reeds. Pan, hearing the sound of the wind blowing through the reeds, turned them into the instrument associated with him."

Anyway, thanks for putting up with me and my musical selections this week!

Victor Borge – Clair de Lune

Obviously not a song I sing to my kids, but one I'll often play as they're drifting off to sleep. It has become one of my favorite pieces, and I think this performance nails it (minus the coughing audience members). Right about 2 minutes in, when it almost seems like the song could be winding up, but then it shifts into an other-world quality... perfectly dream-like. I haven't stopped being wowed by that, despite hearing the song probably a hundred times.
