Mazatlan Recap: Game Twenty-six

MAZATLAN 7, HERMOSILLO 6 IN MAZATLAN

Batting stars:  Isaac Paredes was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs.  Anthony Giansanti was 2-for-4 with a double.  Hector Mora was 2-for-4.  Ricardo Valenzuela was 1-for-4 with a home run, his fifth.

Pitching stars:  Marco Antonio Rivas pitched a perfect inning and struck out one.  Jesus Pirela pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Norberto Obeso was 3-for-5.  Yadiel Hernandez was 3-for-5.  Jasson Atondo was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.  Julian Leon was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk.

The game:  Mazatlan scored in the first when Paredes singled, Oscar Munoz walked, and Giansanti delivered an RBI double.  Hermosillo came back to take the lead in the second.  Singles by Fernando Perez and Luis Alfonso Cruz were followed by a fielder's choice, loading the bases with two out.  Atondo then hit a two-run single and Obeso had an RBI single, putting Hermosillo ahead 3-1.

Mazatlan had a three-run inning of their own in the third to get the lead back.  Jose Augusto Figueroa singled, Maxwell Leon was hit by a pitch, and Paredes doubled home the first run.  A sacrifice fly tied the score, a hit batsman put men on first and third, and an error brought home the go-ahead run.

In the fifth Paredes singled and scored on a Munoz double.  A single and a ground out brought Munoz home to make it 6-3.  Valenzuelan homered leading off the sixth and Mazatlan appeared to have a comfortable 7-3 advantage.

However, things are sometimes not as they appear to be.  Atondo walked leading off the seventh, went to second on a ground out, and scored on Hernandez' single to make it 7-4.  In the eighth, and error and Leon's two-run homer cut the lead to a single run at 7-6.  Hermosillo went on to get a pair of two-out singles, but a popup ended the inning.  They also got a leadoff single in the ninth but could not advance the runner past first base.

Notes:  Paredes is batting .424.  Figueroa was 1-for-5 and is batting .388.  Munoz was 1-for-1 and is batting .340.  Giansanti is batting .314.

Rivas' ERA is 2.77.  Roberto Espinosa gave up an earned run in two-thirds of an inning and has an ERA of 2.40.  Juan Ramon Noriega retired the only batter he faced and has an ERA of zero.

Rios started and pitched five innings, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk and striking out four.

Record:  Mazatlan is 12-14, in seventh place, eight games behind Obregon.  They are a half-game behind sixth place Jalisco.

Mazatlan Recaps: Games Twenty-four and Twenty-five

MAZATLAN 6, LOS MOCHIS 5 IN MAZATLAN

Batting stars:  Hector Mora was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs.  Carlos Munoz was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, his second.  Jose Augusto Figueroa was 2-for-5.

Pitching stars:  Fernando Burgueno pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.  Alejandro Soto pitched a perfectinning.

Opposition stars:  Amilcar Gomez was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer, his second.  Hector Villalobos pitched 4.1 innings, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks and striking out two.

The game:  Los Mochis took the early lead with four in the second inning.  Two walks and a ground out put men on second and third.  Rodolfo Amador hit an RBI single and Gomez hit a two-out three-run homer to make it 4-0 Los Mochis.

Mazatlan chipped away at the lead.  In the third Mora doubled and Maxwell Leon tripled to make it 4-1.  In the fourth Anthony Giansanti walked, took second on a balk, and scored on a Ricardo Valenzuela double to make it 4-2.

Mazatlan took the lead in the seventh.  Mora doubled and went to third on a balk.  A hit batsman put runners on the corners.  A sacrifice fly scored one and Munoz' two-run homer put Mazatlan up 5-4.

They did not hold the lead.  In the eighth Josuan Hernandez singled, Esteban Quiroz walked, and Leandro Castro had a run-scoring single to tie it 5-5.  But Mazatlan triumphed in the ninth.  Isaac Paredes hit a two-out single and scored from first on a single-plus-error by Munoz to win the game.

WP:  Soto (1-0).  LP:  Fabian Cota (1-2).  S:  None.

Notes:  Figueroa is batting .439.  Paredes was 1-for-3 and is batting .385.  Munoz is batting .326.  Giansanti was 1-for-3 and is batting .308.

Burgueno has an ERA of 1.80.  Roberto Espinosa gave up a run in one inning and has an ERA of 1.88.

There were two balks in the game.  Both led to runs.

MAZATLAN 5, LOS MOCHIS 1 IN MAZATLAN

Batting stars:  Carlos Munoz was 2-for-4 with a home run (his third) and two runs.  Maxwell Leon was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Edgar Torres pitched seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk and striking out six.  Jesus Pirela pitched a perfect inning and struck out one.

Opposition stars:  Isaac Rodriguez Salazar was 1-for-3 with a walk.

The game:  Each team scored once in the fourth.  In the top of the inning Esteban Quiroz walked, went to third on a Leandro Castro single, and scored on a ground out.  In the bottom of the inning Munoz homered, making the score 1-1.

Mazatlan took the lead in the sixth.  With one out, Isaac Paredes walked, Munoz singled, and Anthony Giansanti hit a two-run triple, putting Mazatland up 3-1.  They got a couple of insurance runs in the seventh.  With two out Jose Augusto Figueroa walked, Leon singled, and Paredes hit a two-run double, increasing the lead to 5-1.  Los Mochis threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with two out, but could not change the score.

WP:  Torres (2-2).  LP:  Cristian Castillo (0-1).  S:  None.

Notes:  Figueroa was 0-for-3 and is batting .409.  Paredes was 1-for-3 and is batting .379.  Munoz is batting .333.  Giansanti was 1-for-4 and is batting .305.

Juan Ramon Noriega pitched two-thirds of an inning scorelessly and has an ERA of zero.  Marco Antonio Rivas struck out the only man he faced and has an ERA of 3.00.  Parela's ERA is 1.17.

Los Mochis was 0-for-5 with men in scoring position.

Record:  Mazatlan is 11-14, tied for seventh place with Mexicali, eight games behind Obregon.

Mazatlan Recap: Game Twenty-three

MAZATLAN 7, LOS MOCHIS 4 IN MAZATLAN

Batting star:  Anthony Giansanti was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Marco Antonio Rivas struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.  Alejandro Soto struck out two in a perfect inning.  Roberto Espinosa struck out two in a perfect inning.  Jesus Pirela pitched a perfect inning, striking out one.

Opposition star:  Isaac Rodriguez Salazar was 3-for-5.

The game:  Mazatlan jumped out to the early lead.  Jose Augusto Figueroa and Ramon Rios led off with walks.  Isaac Paredes had an RBI double and Carlos Munoz hit a two-run single to make it 3-0 Mazatlan.

It stayed 3-0 until the fifth, when Los Mochis struck back.  With one out, Josuan Hernandez and Carlos Soto singled.  A fly out made two down, but Amilcar Gomez singled to load the bases, Esteban Quiroz singled home two, Darick Hall was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, and Leandro Castro delivered a two-run single, making it 4-3 Los Mochis.

It stayed 4-3 until the seventh.  Ricardo Valenzuela led off the bottom of the inning with a walk, but there was still a runner on first with two out.  Then Figueroa delivered an RBI double, tying the score 4-4.  Mazatlan then regained the lead in the eighth.  Isaac Paredes walked and an error put men on first and second with none out.  There was then a double error on a pickoff attempt, putting Mazatlan ahead.  Ricky Alvarez had an RBI double and with two out, Maxwell Leon singled home a run, putting Mazatlan ahead 7-4.  Los Mochis went down in order in the ninth.

Notes:  Figueroa is batting .444.  Paredes is batting .391. Italo Mota is batting .348.  Munoz is batting .321.  Giansanti is batting .307.

Espinosa and PIrela each have an ERA of 1.35.

Carlos Morales started for Mazatlan.  He pitched 4.2 innings, giving up four runs on six hits and a walk and striking out three.  Rafael Ordaz started for Los Mochis.  He pitched five innings, giving up three runs on four hits and two walks and striking out three.

Los Mochis made three errors.  They were all in the eighth inning and came within the space of two batters.

Record:  Mazatlan is 9-14, in eighth place, eight games behind Obregon.

Mazatlan Recap: Game Twenty-two

MAZATLAN 9, JALISCO 7 IN JALISCO

Batting stars:  Italo Mota was 3-for-5 with a triple.  Ramon Rios was 3-for-6 with a home run, a triple, a double, three RBIs, and two runs.  Anthony Giansanti was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.  Ricardo Valenzuela was 1-for-4 with a home run (his fourth), a walk, and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Gabino Avalos pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up two walks and striking out two.  Marco Antonio Rivas pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.  Juan Ramon Noriega pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two walks.  Ramon Espinosa pitched a perfect inning, striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Henry Urrutia was 2-for-3 with a double and two walks.  Japhet Amador was 2-for-5 with a home run (his fourth), a double, three RBIs, and two runs.  Manny Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs.  Amadeo Zazueta was 2-for-5 with a double.

The game:  Jalisco scored in the first inning when Rodriguez singled and scored from first on Amador's double.  Mazatlan came back with four in the second.  Giansanti led off the inning with a single and Valenzuela walked.  They both scored on a single-plus-error by Edson Garcia.  Mota singled to put men on first and third, a double play scored a run, and Rios homered to make it 4-1 Mazatlan.

Jalisco came back with five in the third.  With one out Carlos Figueroa and Zazueta singled, Rodriguez doubled home a run, an error made it 4-3, Urrutia had an RBI double to tie it, and Dariel Alvarez delivered a two-run single to make it 6-4 Jalisco.

The scoring continued in the fourth.  Garcia reached on an error, but the next two men grounded out, leaving him on third with two down.  But Rios tripled and Isaac Paredes doubled, tying the score 6-6.  In the fifth, Valenzuela homered to put Mazatlan up 7-6.  Garcia walked and Mota singled, putting men on first and third.  Figueroa then singled and Rios doubled, making it 9-6 Mazatlan.

Jalisco got two walks in the seventh, but did not score again until Amador homered in the ninth.  They got the tying run on base, putting two on with two out, but a ground out ended the game.

WP:  Avalos (1-0).  LP:  Dario Gardea (0-2).  S:  Jesus Pirela (2).

Notes:  Figueroa was 1-for-5 and is batting .455.  Mota is batting .421.  Paredes was 1-for-3 with two walks and is batting .381.  Carlos Munoz was 1-for-4 and is batting .321.

Despite his batting average, this is the first time Mota has started all year.  I don't know why.

Matt Gage started for Mazatlan.  He pitched 2.2 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits and no walks and striking out two.

Jose Oyervides started for Jalisco.  He pitched 3.2 innings, giving up six runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks and striking out one.

The game took four hours and three minutes to play.

Record:  Mazatlan is 8-14, tied for eighth place, 8.5 games behind Obregon.

Mazatlan Recap: Game Twenty-one

JALISCO 12, MAZATLAN 10 IN JALISCO

Batting stars:  Isaac Paredes was 4-for-5 with a grand slam.  Jose Augusto Figueroa was 3-for-5 with a two-run homer, a double, and two runs.  Carlos Munoz was 2-for-4 with a double.  Ricky Alvarez was 2-for-5 with a home run, his third.  Ricardo Valenzuela was 1-for-5 with a home run, his third.

Pitching star:  Fernando Burguena struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Henry Urrutia was 3-for-5.  Manny Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two runs.  Julian Ornelas was 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs, and two RBIs.  Agustin Murillo was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Daniel Alvarez was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs, and two RBIs.  Amadeo Zazueta was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

The game:  It was a game of big innings.  Jalisco started it with five in the second.  With one out Alvarez reached on an error and Murillo walked.  Ornelas had an RBI single, Santiago Chavez had a run-scoring double, an error scored two runs, and Rodriguez hit an RBi double, making it 5-0 Jalisco.

That lead lasted until the fourth, when Mazatlan scored six.  Anthony Giansanti singled, but was still on first with two out.  But then Figueroa singled, Hector Mora had a run-scoring single, Maxwell Leon walked to load the bases, Ramon Rios walked to force in a run, and Paredes hit a grand slam, giving Mazatlan a 6-5 lead.  It went to 8-5 in the fifth on solo homers by Alvarez and Valenzuela.

But in the bottom of the fifth Jalisco went ahead to stay.  With one out Rodriguez singled and scored on Japhet Amador's single-plus-error.  Urrutia singled to put men on first and second, Alvarez had a run-scoring double, Murillo and Ornelas had RBI singles, Santiago Chavez walked to fill the bases, and Zazueta had a two-run single.  It was 11-8 Jalisco.

Mazatlan got back into it in the seventh when Giansanti walked and Figueroa hit a two-run homer, making it 11-10.  But that was as close as Mazatlan would get.  They put two on in the eighth, but a double play took them out of the inning.  Jalisco got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Rodriguez walked, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an Alvarez single.  Mazatlan went down in order in the ninth.

Francisco Rios started and pitched 1.2 innings, allowing five runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks, striking out none.  Burgueno has an ERA of 2.16.

Orlando Lara started for Jalisco.  He pitched four innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits and two walks and striking out one.

Record:  Mazatlan is 7-14, in tenth (last) place, 9.5 games behind Obregon.

Mazatlan Recap: Game Twenty

JALISCO 4, MAZATLAN 3 IN JALISCO

Batting stars:  Isaac Paredes was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Edgar Torres pitched six innings, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks and striking out four.  Juan Ramon Noriega gave up an unearned run on no hits and one walk.  Roberto Espinosa pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Luis Ivan Rodriguez pitched 6.2 innings, giving up one run on five hits and a walk and striking out six.  Agustin Murillo was 2-for-3 with a double.  Brennan Bernardino struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.

The game:  Mazatlan started the scoring in the third when Edson Garcia doubled and scored on a single by Jose Augusto Figueroa.  Jalisco came right back with three in the bottom of the third.  Doubles by Murillo and Julian Ornelas put men on second and third.  Alan Espinoza doubled them both home to put Jalisco in front and a Manny Rodriguez single made it 3-1 Jalisco.

It stayed 3-1 until the seventh, when Jalisco scored again.  Ornelas walked and stole second.  He went to third on an error and scored on a ground out, making it 4-1.

Mazatlan got back into it in the eighth.  Figueroa drew a one-out walk and Ramon Rios singled.  Isaac Paredeas had an RBI single to make it 4-2.  With two out Ricky Alvarez delivered an RBI single, but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double.  The score was 4-3, but the threat was over.  Mazatlan got a one-out walk in the ninth but did not advance the man past first base.

WP:  Rodriguez (3-0).  LP:  Torres (1-2).  S:  Bernardino (1).

Notes:  This was the first game for Mazatlan in a week and a half, as the league took a COVID-related pause.

Figueroa was 1-for-3 and is batting .478.  Italo Mota was used as a pinch-runner and is batting .385.  Carlos Munoz was 0-for-4 and is batting .315.

Noriega has an ERA of zero.  Espinosa's ERA is 1.59.

The game-time temperature was 73.  Today's high where I live is predicted to be 64.  Let's play ball!

Record:  Mazatlan is 7-13, in ninth place, 9.5 games behind Obregon.  My understanding is that eight teams make the playoffs, although I could be wrong about that.

Next game:  Mazatlan is again at Jalisco tonight.

Mazatlan Recap: Game Nineteen

GUASAVE 3, MAZATLAN 1 IN GUASAVE

Batting star:  Carlos Munoz was 3-for-4 with a double.

Pitching star:  Irwin Delgado pitched seven innings, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk and striking out three.

Opposition stars:  Fernando Miranda pitched 5.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits and no walks and striking out three.  Jesse Castillo was 1-for-3 with a home run (his second) and a walk.  Yosshel Hurtado retired all four men he faced, striking out one.  Rafael Cordova pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.  Geno Encina struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

The game:  In the second, Yadir Drake and Emmanuel Avila singled and Keven Lamas walked, loading the bases.  Samar Leyva singled home one run and a sacrifice fly brought in another.  A double play ended the inning, but Guasave had a 2-0 lead.  Castillo homered in the third to make it 3-0.

Mazatlan got on the board in the sixth.  Hector Mora singled, stole second, went to third on a ground out, and scored on a Munoz single to cut the lead to 3-1.  That's where it would stay, though.  Mazatlan got only a pair of singles after that and did not advance a man past first base.

Notes:  Jose Augusto Figueroa was 1-for-3 and is batting .500.  Munoz raised his average to .333.

Delgado has an ERA of 3.00.  Jeff Ibarra pitched a third of an inning without giving up a run and has an ERA of 2.08.  Hurtado's ERA is 1.69.

Each team stranded four runners and was 1-for-5 with men in scoring position.  Each team also struck out six batters.

Mazatlan Recap: Game Eighteen

MAZATLAN 7, GUASAVE 6 IN GUASAVE

Batting stars:  Anthony Giansanti was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.  Ricardo Valenzuela was 1-for-2 with a three-run homer (his second), two walks, and two runs.  Isaac Paredes was 1-for-2 with two walks.

Pitching star:  Roberto Espinosa pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Emmanuel Avila was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Miguel Guzman was 2-for-4 with a triple and three runs.  Yadir Drake was 2-for-5 with three RBIs.  Yosshel Hurtado pitched a perfect inning and struck out one.  Manuel Chavez pitched a perfect inning and struck out one.

The game:  Guasave scored in more innings, but Mazatlan had the big innings.  In the first, Guzman hit a one-out triple and scored on a sacrifice fly.  In the third, Jose Herberto Felix singled, Leo German walked, and Marco Jaime singled, loading the bases with none out.  Guzman then hit into a double play, scoring a run but taking Guasave out of the inning.  It was 2-0 through three.

Mazatlan took the lead in the fourth.  Carlos Munoz singled and Paredes walked.  A double play made it two out with a man on third, but Ramon Rios walked and Valenzuela hit a three-run homer to make it 3-2.

Mazatlan had another big inning in the sixth.  Paredes walked and Ricky Alvarez singled.  A bunt put men on second and third with one out and an intentional walk loaded the bases.  Jose Luna then hit a two-run double, and with two out Giansanti hit a two-run single, making the score 7-2.

Guasave did not give up.  With two out in the bottom of the sixth, Drake and Avila singled and Alejandro Ortiz walked, loading the bases.  Samar Leyva walked to make it 7-3, but that was all Guasave got.  In the seventh, a hit batsman and two walks loaded the bases with one out and Drake delivered a two-run single, cutting the margin to 7-5.  In the ninth Guzman singled and went to third on a Jesse Castillo double.  A ground out made it 7-6.  A wild pitch moved the tying run to third.  A hit batsman put the winning run on base.  But the next two batters struck out, and Mazatlan held on to win.

Torres pitched 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and three walks and striking out none.  Espinosa lowered his ERA to 1.74.

Guasave pitchers struck out ten.  Mazatlan pitchers struck out only two--the last two batters of the game.

Guasave stranded ten and was 2-for-11 with men in scoring position.

Record:  Mazatlan is 7-11, in seventh place, nine games behind Obregon.

Mazatlan Recap: Game Fifteen

MEXICALI 3, MAZATLAN 1 IN MAZATLAN

Batting stars:  Edson Garcia was 2-for-3 with a double.  Carlos Munoz was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Marco Antonio Duarte pitched five innings, giving up one run on five hits and three walks and striking out four.  Ivan Zavala struck out two in a perfect inning.  Alejandro Soto pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk and striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Miguel Pena pitched six innings, giving up one run on five hits and three walks and striking out none.  Luis Juarez was 2-for-3 with a home run (his second) and a walk.  Eric Aguilera was 2-for-4 with a double.  Fabricio Macias was 2-for-4.  Edgar Gomez pitched a perfect inning and struck out one.  Greg Mahle pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.  Jake Sanchez pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.

The game:  It was scoreless until the fourth.  Ricardo Valenzuela walked, went to second on a ground out, and scored on Chris Roberson's single to put Mazatlan up 1-0.

That was as good as it got, though.  Mexicali tied it in the next half-inning.  Macias singled, stole second, and scored on a pair of wild pitches to make it 1-1.  In the seventh, Javier Salazar walked and Juarez hit a two-run homer to make it 3-1 Mexicali.

And that was it.  Mazatlan got a man on in each of the last two innings, bringing the tying run to the plate, but each time a double play ended the inning.

WP:  Pena (1-0).  LP:  Roman Pena (0-2).  S:  Sanchez (2).

Notes:  Munoz raised his average to .333.

Duarte's ERA is 1.17.  Zavala's ERA is 2.57.

Mazatlan has now lost four consecutive games.

OBREGON 2, MAZATLAN 1 IN MAZATLAN (11 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Jose Augusto Figueroa was 3-for-5.  Anthony Giansanti was 2-for-4 with a double.  Edson Garcia was 2-for-5 with a double and a walk.  Ricardo Valenzuela was 2-for-5.

Pitching stars:  Irwin Delgado struck out five in five innings, giving up one run on two hits and two walks.  Ivan Zavala retired all four men he faced, striking out one.  Roberto Espinosa pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk and striking out one.  Ryan Newell pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Dallas Martinez pitched six innings, giving up one run on eight hits and a walk and striking out three.  Paulo Orlando was 2-for-4.  Sebastian Valle was 1-for-4 with a home run (his third) and two RBIs.  Fernando Sanchez pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and striking out one.  Felipe Gonzalez struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up three hits.  Miguel Aguilar pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and striking out one.

The game:  Alonso Gaitan led off the game with a double, went to third on a ground out, and scored on an error to put Obregon up 1-0.  Mazatlan tied it in the fourth on singles by Valenzuela, Carlos Munoz, and Figueroa.

And that's where it stayed until the eleventh inning.  Valle led off the inning with a home run, and that was that.  Obregon got men to first and second with two out in the bottom of the eleventh, but Garcia struck out to end the game.

Notes:  Figueroa is batting .571.  He also has all the vowels in his last name.  Italo Mota is batting .385.  Despite that, he was pinch-hit for by Jose Luna, who is batting .357.  Munoz is batting .320.  Giansanti is batting .300.

Delgado's ERA is 2.57.  Marco Antonio Rivas pitched two-thirds of an inning without giving up a run and has an ERA of 2.84.  Gabino Avalos hit the only batter he faced, but the man did not score, so his ERA remains zero.  Zavala's ERA is 3.00.  Espinosa has an ERA of 1.35.

Mazatlan stranded thirteen men and was 2-for-14 with men in scoring position.  Obregon stranded ten and was 1-for-13 with men in scoring position.

The plate umpire's name was Socrates Marin.  It seems like Socrates is a good name for an umpire to have.

Obregon has swept the series.
