Minor Details: Games of May 13

ST. PAUL SAINTS 6, IOWA CUBS 4 IN IOWA

Carson McCusker hit a two-run double in the fifth to break a 2-2 tie and put St. Paul in the lead to stay.  They added single runs in the sixth and seventh.  McCusker was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.  Edouard Julien was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two walks, and three runs.  Mike Ford was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Mickey Gasper was 2-for-5 with a run.  Andrew Morris pitched five innings, giving up three runs on nine hits and two walks and striking out one.  Jacob Bosiokovic struck out two in a perfect inning.  Brady Fiegl pitched a perfect inning.

ARKANSAS TRAVELERS 6, WICHITA WIND SURGE 5 IN WICHITA

Wichita had leads of 2-0, 4-2, and 5-4, but Arkansas finally scored two in the ninth to go ahead.  It was their only lead, but the only one they needed.  Noah Cardenas hit a home run, his third.  Trent Baker struck out five in five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and no walks.

PEORIA CHIEFS 13, CEDAR RAPIDS KERNELS 10 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Cedar Rapids scored two in the second and led all the way through the seventh.  It was, as Dolly Parton sang, nine to five when Peoria scored eight runs in the eighth to win it.  There were eight singles, a double, and an error, which has to be one of the most frustrating ways to give up eight runs (not that there's a good way to do it).  Jose Salas was 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs.  Misael Urbina was 2-for-2 with a triple, three walks, a run, and an RBI.  Khadim Diaw was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.  Jaime Ferrer was 2-for-5 with a run.  Brandon Winokur was 1-for-5 with a home run (his second) and two runs.  Alejandro Hidalgo struck out six in five innings but gave up four runs on seven hits and no walks.  Juan Mercedes pitched a perfect inning.

JUPITER HAMMERHEADS 5, FORT MYERS MIGHTY MUSSELS 4 IN JUPITER

Carlos Sanchez singled home a run in the sixth to put Jupiter ahead to stay.  An error gave them an extra run in the seventh which turned out to be the difference in the game.  Poncho Ruiz was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two walks, and two runs.  Miguel Briceno was 2-for-4 with a home run (his second), a walk, two runs, and two RBIs.  Jay Thomason was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Adrian Bohorquez struck out five in 3.1 innings but gave up three runs on five hits and two walks.  Cole Peschi pitched 4.2 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk and striking out three.

FCL RAYS 7, FCL TWINS 3 AT TWINS

The Rays took the lead with three in the second and led 7-1 after four.  Merphy Hernandez was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.  Yoel Roque started and pitched a perfect inning.  Leonardo Rondon pitched 3.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits and three walks and striking out three.  Aiberson Ventura pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.

ST. PAUL SAINTS 8, BUFFALO BISONS 7 IN ST. PAUL

Will Wagner hit a two-run single in the third to put Buffalo up 2-0.  Will Holland doubled home a run in the fourth and the Saints scored two in the fifth to go up 3-2.  The lead lasted until the next half-inning, when Joey Loperfido hit a two-run single to make it 4-3.  That lead also lasted until the next half-inning, when Edouard Julien hit a two-run single-plus-error to give St. Paul a 5-4 lead.  In the eighth, homers by Loperfido and Davis Schneider put Buffalo back in front 7-5.  Not to worry, because Mike Ford hit a three-run homer in the ninth to give the Saints a walkoff victory!

Batters:  Ryan Fitzgerald was 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, and two runs.  Mickey Gasper was 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, and two runs.  Jeferson Morales was 2-for-4 with a run.  Edouard Julien was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Mike Ford was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer and two walks.

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS 6, WICHITA WIND SURGE 5 IN NORTHWEST ARKANSAS

Rubel Cespedes hit a two-run homer in the first and Wichita scored two in the second to take a 4-0 lead.  It stayed 4-0 through six, and it was looking good.  But Gavin Cross hit a two-run homer in the seventh and did it again in the ninth, tying the score.  A bases-loaded walk scored on for Wichita in the tenth, but Carter Jensen delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the tenth to walk it off for Northwest Arkansas.

Batters:  Tanner Schobel was 4-for-6 with a double, two runs, and an RBI.  Rubel Cespedes was 3-for-4 with a home run (his third), a double, two walks, and three RBIs.  Ben Ross was 2-for-5 with a walk and an RBI.  Kala'i Rosario was 2-for-6 with an RBI.

Pitchers:  Trent Baker struck out six and walked three in five shutout innings, giving up one hit.

Opponents:  Gavin Cross was 2-for-4 with two home runs (his second and third) and four RBIs.  Rudy Martin was 2-for-4 with a run.  Ben Sears struck out three and walked three in two shutout innings, giving up two hits.  Ryan Ramsey struck out five in five innings, giving up an unearned run on six hits and two walks.

CEDAR RAPIDS KERNELS 6, BELOIT SKY CARP 5 IN BELOIT

Danny De Andrade doubled home a run in the first and Cedar Rapids scored three in the second on three hit batsmen, two walks, and a wild pitch to go ahead 4-0.  Beloit scored two in the bottom of the second, but Cedar Rapids scored one in the third on three more walks and another hit batsman.  But Jay Beshears hit a two-run double in the third and homered in the fifth to tie it 5-5.  There was no more scoring until the eighth, when a walk, a passed ball, and a De Andrade RBI single produced the game-winner for Cedar Rapids.

Batters:  Danny De Andrade was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  Kyle DeBarge was 2-for-5 with two runs.  Jaime Ferrer was 0-for-2 but was hit by pitches three times.

Pitchers:  Alejandro Hidalgo struck out four in three innings, but allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks.  Cole Percival pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and striking out two.  Paulshawn Pasqualotto pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.

Opponents:  Fenwick Trimble was 3-for-5 with a run.  Jay Beshears was 2-for-5 with a home run (his third), a double, and three RBIs.  Colby Shade hit a home run.  Gabe Bierman pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and two walks and striking out two.  Jack Sellinger struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

DUNEDIN BLUE JAYS 7, FORT MYERS MIGHTY MUSSELS 3 IN FORT MYERS

Homers by Jean Joseph and Sam Shaw gave Dunedin a 3-1 lead in the third.  Yasser Mercedes hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third to tie it 3-3.  But it was all Dunedin after that.  Joseph singled home a run in the fourth to make it 4-3.  It stayed close until the eighth, when Dunedin scored three more to put the game out of reach.

Batters:  Yasser Mercedes hit a two-run homer, his second.  Fort Myers had only two hits.

Pitchers:  Adrian Bohorquez struck out five in three innings, but allowed four runs on three hits and two walks.

Opponents:  Bryce Arnold was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, a run, and an RBI.  Jean Joseph was 2-for-4 with a home run (his second) and three RBIs.  Sam Shaw was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth), a walk, and two runs.  Gage Stanifer struck out four and walked three in four shutout innings, not allowing a hit.

Stats:  Jay Thomason has an OPS of .979.  Cole Peschi has an ERA of 0.83.

ST. PAUL SAINTS 3, COLUMBUS CLIPPERS 2 IN COLUMBUS (10 INNINGS)

Finally able to get a game in, the Saints decided to play a little extra to make it worth their while.  Petey Halpin singles home a run in the second and Will Brennan homered in the third to make it 2-0 Columbus.  But our own Will, Will Holland, homered in the fifth to get St. Paul on the board and Mike Ford singled home a run in the sixth to tie it 2-2.  It stayed there until the tenth, when a sacrifice fly plated Manfred Man Anthony Prato.  Columbus was retired in order in the bottom of the inning and the good guys won.  Columbus has twelve hits, but stranded thirteen and went 1-for-12 with men in scoring position.

Batters:  Ryan Fitzgerald was 2-for-4.  Will Holland hit a home run.

Pitchers:  Zebby Matthews struck out five in four innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks.  Michael Tonkin (remember him?) struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Darren McCaughan pitched three shutout innings, giving up four hits and a walk and striking out two.  Brady Feigl struck out two in a perfect ninth.

Opponents:  Johnathan Rodriguez was 4-for-5 with a double.  Will Brennan was 3-for-4 with a home run (his third) and a walk.  Kody Huff was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and a run.  Petey Halpin was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Parker Messick struck out nine in five innings, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks.  Zak Kent struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

FRISCO ROUGHRIDERS 6, WICHITA WIND SURGE 1 IN FRISCO

Keyber Rodriguez singled home a run in the first and tripled one home in the third to give Frisco a 2-0 lead.  Rubel Cespedes had an RBI single to get Wichita on the board.  It was all Frisco from there, however, as they got two in the sixth and Luis Mieses hit a two-run single in the eighth.  As Mr. Jinx used to say, "I hate those Mieses to pieces!"

Batters:  Tyler Dearden was 2-for-3.  Rubel Cespedes was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Pitchers:  Christian MacLeod pitched three innings, giving up two runs on five hits and no walks and striking out one.  John Stankiewicz struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings.

Opponents:  Keyber Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs, and a run.  Luis Mieses was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.  Sebastian Walcott was 2-for-4 with two runs.  Florencio Serrano pitched three perfect innings, striking out one.  Ryan Lobus struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Larson Kindreich pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.

Carter Trice put the Cubs ahead in a trice, delivering a first-inning RBI single.  Kaelen Culpepper homered in the third to tie it 1-1 and Kevin Maitan doubled home a run in the fourth to give Cedar Rapids the lead.  The Kernels then scored five in the fifth on six singles to take control of the game.  Jose Salas hit a two-run double in the eighth.

Batters:  Khadim Diaw was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.  Nate Baez was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run.  Kaelen Culpepper was 2-for-5 with a home run (his second) and two runs.

Pitchers:  Jeremy Lee pitched five innings, giving up one run on five hits and no walks and striking out four.  Spencer Bengard pitched four shutout innings, giving up four hits and no walks and striking out two.

Opponents:  Carter Trice was 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Ivan Brethowr was 2-for-4.  Reginald Preciado was 2-for-4.  South Bend doesn't win much, but they have some players with cool names.

TAMPA TARPONS 12, FORT MYERS MIGHTY MUSSELS 4 IN TAMPA

It started well.  Fort Myers took a 4-0 lead in the second on two-run homers by Miguel Briceno and Jefferson Valladares.  But Tampa matched them with a four-run third, took the lead with two in the fourth, added one more in the fifth, and put the game out of reach with a five-run seventh.  Each team made four errors, but Fort Myers went 2-for-17 with men in scoring position.  Twins Baseball!

Batters:  Jay Thomason was 2-for-5 with two doubles and a run.  Miguel Briceno was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk.  Jefferson Valladares was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer.

Pitchers:  Starter Dylan Questad struck out five in three innings, but allowed four runs on six hits and a walk.  Xavier Kolhasser struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

ST. PAUL SAINTS 6, COLUMBUS CLIPPERS 4 IN COLUMBUS (GAME 1–5 INNINGS)

Jeferson Morales hit a two-run homer in the first.  It was 3-1 after two, but Columbus got three in the third to take a 4-3 lead.  Not to worry, though, as Mike Ford led off the fourth with a homer to tie it.  Morales struck again in the fifth, again leading off the inning with a home run, and Anthony Prato had an RBI single for an insurance run.  Rain came in the top of the sixth, and the game was over with a Saints win.

BattersMike Ford was 2-for-2 with a home run (his sixth), a walk, and two runs.  Jeferson Morales was 2-for-3 with two home runs (his third and fourth) and three RBIs.

PitchersMarco Raya pitched three innings, allowing four runs on three hits and five walks.  Travis Adams struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up three hits.

Rained out.  Will be made up tomorrow.

FRISCO ROUGHRIDERS 3, WICHITA WIND SURGE 2 IN FRISCO

Abimelec Ortiz hit a two-run homer in the third to give Frisco a 2-0 lead.  Noah Cardenas singled home a run in the fourth to get Wichita on the board, but Frisco got the run back in the fifth.  Jake Rucker singled home a run in the sixth to again cut the margin to one.  Wichita had the bases loaded with one out, but a line drive double play ended the inning.  They would again get a man into scoring position with one out in the eighth, but a pair of fly outs ended the inning.  Wichita had thirteen hits, but only two runs.  They stranded ten and went 2-for-9 with men in scoring position.  Twins baseball!

BattersBen Ross was 3-for-4 with a double.  Ricardo Olivar was 3-for-5.  Kala’i Rosario was 2-for-4 with a run.

PitchersConnor Prielipp pitched 2.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk.  Aaron Rozek struck out five in 4.1 innings, giving up one run on four hits and no walks.  Cody Laweryson struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

South Bend scored two in the first and two in the second to take a 4-0 lead.  Kyle DeBarge hit a two-run homer in the third to cut the lead in half.  But South Bend added two more in the fifth and one in the seventh to go up 7-2.  An error gave Cedar Rapids two in the eighth, but that was as close as they could come.

Jeremy Rivas hit a three-run homer in the first to put Springfield up early.  Wichita tied it in the third on a bases-loaded walk and a two-run single by Rubel Cespedes.  An RBI single and a sacrifice fly in the fourth put Springfield back in front 5-3.  Andrew Cossetti homered in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-4.  From there, however, it was all Springfield.  Ramon Mendoza homered in a two-run sixth, Miguel Ugueto hit a two-run homer in a four-run seventh, and Carlos Linares singled home a run in the ninth.

Danny De Andrade homered in the second to put Cedar Rapids on the board, but a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth tied it 1-1.  In the bottom of the fifth, however, Kaelen Culpepper hit a three-run homer to put Cedar Rapids in the lead to stay.  A ground out scored a run in the seventh, and Culpepper hit a two-run single in a three-run eighth that sealed the victory.

Fort Myers scored early and often, getting all ten runs in the first three innings.  Three of them came in the first, as Byron Chourio led off the game with a triple, Jose Salas followed with an RBI single, and Jay Thomason followed that with a three-run homer.  A wild pitch and a sacrifice fly brought home two in the second.  Clearwater got their lone run in the bottom of the second on a Raider Tello homer, but Fort Myers responded with five in the third.  Maddux Houghton singled home one, and later in the inning Salas hit a grand slam.  Three Fort Myers pitchers took it from there, limiting Clearwater to just four hits for the game.

It was actually close for seven innings.  There was no score until the fourth, when Jeremy Rivas put Springfield on the board with an RBI double.  Wichita got the run back in the bottom of the fourth on a solo homer by Kala'i Rosario and took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on an Aaron Sabato RBI double.  Wichita then exploded for nine in the eighth.  The first run scored on a walk, an error, a wild pitch, and a balk.  Wichita got the benefit of four more walks and two more wild pitches in the inning.  They also got three singles before Jorel Ortega hit a pinch-hit grand slam to close out the inning.  The Wind Surge scored nine runs on just four hits.

Fort Myers scored on a wild pitch in the first and Tampa scored on a double steak of second and home in the second.  In the fourth, Angel Del Rosario delivered an RBI single.  The pitching took it from there, as four Mighty Mussels pitchers limited Tampa to one run despite allowing seven hits and five walks.  It helped that they struck out eleven.  Tampa stranded twelve runners and went 1-for-12 with men in scoring position.

Batters:  Angel Del Rosario was 1-for-4 with an RBI, the only RBI for either team.
