The game:  Mazatlan scored in the first when Isaac Paredes doubled and scored on a Munoz single.  Culiacan tied it in the second when Eric Meza doubled and scored on an Alan Sanchez single.  Mazatlan took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Munoz singled, went to third on a Giansanti double, and scored on a sacrifice fly.

It was all Culiacan from there.  In the fifth Chavez doubled and Pena homered to put Culiacan up 3-2.  It stayed 3-2 until the ninth, when Chavez singled and Wing homered, bringing it to the total of 5-2.

WP:  Barreda (4-2).  LP:  Carlos Morales (2-1).  S:  Alberto Baldonado (9).

Record:  Mazatlan is 15-18, in eighth place, seven games behind Obregon.  They are only one game out of sixth.

Next game:  Mazatlan again hosts Culiacan tonight.

Lara Recaps: Games Three and Four

As we are catching up, the recaps will be shorter.  We hope to get back to full recaps tomorrow.

LARA 7, MARGARITA 6 IN LARA (11 INNINGS)

Sunday

LARA 6, MARGARITA 2 IN MARGARITA

Tuesday

Yonathan Mendoza's RBI triple in the eighth broke a 2-2 tie and Lara scored three in the ninth to put it away.  Gabriel Moreno was 3-for-5 with two doubles.  Mendoza was 2-for-5 and had a double to go along with his triple.  Ex-Twin Logan Darnell started and pitched four innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits and a walk and striking out two.

Record:  Lara is 3-1, in first place in the West Division, a half game ahead of Magallanes.

Next game:  Lara is at Zulia tonight.

Gigantes Recaps: Games Five and Six

As we're catching up, the recaps will be shorter.  We hope to get back to full recaps tomorrow.

Sunday's game was rained out.

LICEY 8, GIGANTES 5 IN LICEY

Monday

Licey scored seven runs in the second inning.  Wellington Castillo hit a two-run homer in the inning.  The Gigantes were led by Richard Urena, who was 2-for-3 with a walk, and Jose Siri, who was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Starter Rogello Armenteros lasted just 1.2 innings, allowing six runs (two earned) on five hits and no walks and striking out one.

Yermin Mercedes hit a two-run homer in the top of the tenth.  Carlos Peguero hit a solo homer in the bottom of the tenth, but of course it was not enough.  Dustin Crenshaw started for the Gigantes and pitched 4.2 innings, giving up one run on seven hits and no walks and striking out four.

Record:  The Gigantes are 2-4, in sixth (last) place, but just 2.5 games behind first-place Licey.  Due to rainouts, there are large differences in numbers of games played.  Licey has played just five games, while Escogido has played fifteen.

Next game:  The Gigantes are at Escogido tonight.

Mazatlan Recaps: Games Thirty, Thirty-one, and Thirty-two

As we're catching up, the recaps will be shorter.  Hopefully we can get back to full recaps tomorrow.

NAVOJOA 4, MAZATLAN 1 IN NAVOJOA (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Sunday

Navojoa scored all four of their runs in the sixth.  Christian Zazueta hit a three-run homer, his sixth.  Mazatlan was led by Maxwell Leon, who was 2-for-3 with a double.  Francisco Rios struck out eight in 5.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit and two walks.

Lara Recap: Game Two

LARA 10, ZULIA 4 IN ZULIA

Batting stars:  Jecksson Flores was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two RBIs.  Joantgel Segovia was 2-for-4 with a triple.  Osman Marval was 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs.  Yordanys Linares was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Yonathan Mendoza was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs.  Rene Reyes was 2-for-5.

Pitching stars:  Raul Rivero pitched 4.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and no walks and striking out two.  Vicente Campos retired all five men he faced, striking out two.  Yapson Gomez pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Oscar Campos was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer.  Jorbit Vivas was 2-for-4.  Christian Fernandez pitched two shutout innings, giving up only a walk.

The game:  It was actually scoreless through four innings.  In the fifth, however, Lara broke through.  Segovia led off with a triple and Gabriel Moreno followed with an RBI single.  Moreno stole second and scored on Mendoza's double.  A popup was the first out, but then Cesar Izturis singled to put runners on the corners.  Linares then singled home a run and Flores doubled home another, making it 4-0 Lara.

Zulia cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, as Grenny Cumana doubled and Campos hit a two-run homer.  In the seventh, however, Lara took control.  Two walks and a Linares single loaded the bases with none out.  Flores singled home one run, Marval singled home two, and a sacrifice fly made it 8-2 Lara.  Lara added two more in the eighth on singles by Mondoza and Deiner Lopez, an RBI double by Edward Barboza, and a sacrifice fly.  Zulia got single runs in the eighth and ninth but never threatened to get back into the game.

WP:  Vicente Campos (1-0).  LP:  Cesar Jimenez (0-1).  S:  None.

Notes:  Lara had sixteen hits.  Everyone had at least one hit and six of their players had two.  Even the one substitute that used, Barboza, had a hit.  Thirteen of the hits were singles and the other three were doubles.

The wind was two miles an hour in from left.  Living where I do, where a fifteen mile an hour wind is considered normal, that sounds wonderful.

Record:  Zulia is 1-1, tied for third with three other teams, one game behind Caracas.

Next game:  Lara hosts Margarita this afternoon.

Mazatlan Recap: Game Twenty-nine

NAVOJOA 2, MAZATLAN 1 IN NAVOJOA

Batting star:  Maxwell Leon was 1-for-4 with a home run.

Pitching stars:  Edgar Torres pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks and striking out three.  Juan Ramon Noriega pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.

Opposition stars:  Felix Doubront pitched seven innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks and striking out five.  Asael Sanchez was 2-for-3 with a home run.  Omar Renteria was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Christian Zazueta was 2-for-4 with a double.

The game:  Navojoa scored in the first when Renteria singled, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Zazueta's double.  Leon homered with two out in the third to tie it 1-1.  Mazatlan got all three of their hits in that inning, as two singles followed, but a fly out kept the score at 1-1.

The only other score came in the seventh, when Sanchez homered.  That made it 2-1, and that's where it stayed.

WP:  Doubront (4-2).  LP:  Torres (2-3).  S:  Carlos Bustamonte (5).

Notes:  Isaac Paredes was 1-for-4 and is batting .378.  Jose Augusto Figueroa was 0-for-1 and is batting .333.  Carlos Munoz was 0-for-4 and is batting .314.

Torres lowered his ERA to 2.98.  Noriega has an ERA of zero.

As noted above, Mazatlan had only three hits and got them all in the same inning, the third.  I wonder what the record is for most hits where you got them all in one inning.

Record:  Mazatlan is 14-15, in seventh place, 6.5 games behind Obregon.   They are a half game out of sixth and one game out of fifth.

Next game:  Mazatlan has a doubleheader in Obregon this afternoon.

Lara Recap: Game One

The Venezuelan League started last night.  Our randomly selected team to follow in that league is the Cardinales de Lara.

ZULIA 6, LARA 4 IN LARA

Batting stars:  Deiner Lopez was 2-for-4.  Jecksson Flores was 2-for-5 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Luis Oviedo struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Leonel Campos struck out two a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.  Jesus Sanchez pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Grenny Cumana was 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs.  Jose Salas was 2-for-4.  Elvis Araujo pitched four shutout innings, giving up two hits and one walk and striking out two.  Danny Rondon pitched two perfect innings and struck out one.

The game:  Zulia scored in the first inning on two walks and an Ali Castillo single.  It stayed 1-0 until the fifth.  Zulia loaded the bases with none out on a Jose Salas single, a walk to Pablo Olivares, and a single by Daniel Brito.  A walk forced home one run, an error brought home another, and another walk forced home a third.  Jorbit Vivas then had an RBI single, making the score 5-0 Zulia.

Lara made a game of it.  They got on the board in the seventh on a hit batsman, a walk, a balk, and a ground out.  In the eighth Flores singled, a hit batsman and a walk loaded the bases, and two more walks forced home two runs, cutting the lead to 5-3.

That was as close as Lara would get.  Zulia scored once in the ninth on two walks and a Cumana single.  Lara got that run back, but no more, in the bottom of the ninth on a walk, a Flores double, and a ground out, but a fly out ended the game.

WP:  Rondon (1-0).  LP:  Nestor Molina (0-1).  S:  Silvino Bracho (1).

Notes:  Molina started for Lara.  He pitched four innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits and four walks and struck out three.

There were fourteen walks in the game.  Lara pitchers walked eight and Zulia pitchers walked six.  Four of the game's ten runs were walked in.

Lara leadoff batter Yordanys Linares was 0-for-5 and struck out four times.  I don't know anything about him, but I suspect that if he continues to do that he won't be the leadoff batter for long.

Lara was 0-for-7 with men in scoring position and stranded nine.  As you can see above, two of their runs were walked in and the other two scored on ground outs.

Record:  Lara is 0-1, tied for seventh, one game behind Zulia and Caracas.

Next game:  Lara is at Zulia this afternoon.

Mazatlan Recap: Game Twenty-eight

MAZATLAN 3, HERMOSILLO 1 IN MAZATLAN

Batting stars:  Hector Mora was 2-for-4 with a double.  Ricky Alvarez was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Carlos Morales pitched six innings, giving up one run on six hits and no walks and striking out four.  Alejandro Soto pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk and striking out one.  Roberto Espinosa pitched a perfect inning, striking out one.  Jesus Pirela struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Irving Lopez was 2-for-3 with two doubles.  Alex Robles was 2-for-4.  Rafael Martin struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

The game:  Mazatlan opened the scoring in the second.  An error and a walk put men on first and second with one out, and a Mora single made it 1-0.  Mazatlan scored again in the fourth on walks to Ramon Rios and Ricardo Valenzuela and a double by Edson Garcia, making it 2-0.

Hermosillo got on the board in the fifth when Lopez led off with a double and scored on a pair of ground outs.  Mazatlan got the run back in the seventh when Carlos Munoz singled, Alvarez doubled, and Rios singled, leaving the score 3-1.

That was it.  The last seven Hermosillo batters were retired, and the score remained 3-1 Mazatlan.

WP:  Morales (2-0).  LP:  Jose Cerda (0-1).  S:  Pirela (6).

Notes:  Isaac Paredes was 1-for-4 and is batting .390.  Jose Augusto Figueroa was 0-for-5 and is batting .339.  Munoz was 1-for-3 and is batting .327.

Espinosa lowered his ERA to 2.12.  Pirela is down to 0.84.

Hermosillo was 0-for-6 with men in scoring position, stranding six.  Mazatlan was just 3-for-15, but getting fifteen at-bats with runners in scoring position is always a good thing.  They stranded ten.

Despite the low score, the game again took over three hours, coming in at 3:05.  Apparently the length of games is not just a major league baseball issue.

Record:  Mazatlan is 14-14, in seventh place, seven games behind the Yaquis de Obregon.  They are a half game behind sixth-place Jalisco, and also a half game out of fifth and just a game out of third.

Next game:  Mazatlan has an off day today.  They are at Navojoa Saturday.

Mazatlan Recap: Game Twenty-seven

MAZATLAN 3, HERMOSILLO 0 IN MAZATLAN

Batting star:  Maxwell Leon was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Matt Gage struck out six in six shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk.  Roberto Espinosa pitched a perfect inning.  Jesus Pirela pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Jorge Castillo pitched 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and four walks and striking out none.  Alan Rangel pitched two perfect innings.

The game:  It was scoreless until the third.  Ricardo Valenzuela doubled and Jose Augusto Figueroa drew a one-out walk.  Leon singled home a run and Isaac Paredes doubled home another, making it 2-0 Mazatlan.  It stayed 2-0 until the eighth, when Leon homered.

That's pretty much it.  Hermosillo did not get a baserunner until the fourth, when a leadoff single and a one-out walk put men on first and second.  They also put men on first and second with one out in the seventh.

WP:  Gage (1-0).  LP:  Castillo (1-2).  S:  Pirela (5).

Notes:  Paredes was 1-for-4 and is batting .405.  Figueroa was 0-for-2 and is batting .373.  Carlos Munoz was 0-for-4 and is batting .327.  Anthony Giansanti was 0-for-1 and is batting .310.  Giansanti came out of the game after being hit by a pitch in the sixth inning.

Marco Antonio Rivas struck out the only man he faced and has an ERA of 2.70.  Espinosa's ERA is 2.25.  Pirela's ERA is 0.93.

Despite the fact that it was a 3-0 game and there were only eight hits, the game took 3 hours and 6 minutes to play.

Record:  Mazatlan is 13-14, in seventh place, eight games behind the Yaquis de Obregon.  They are a half game behind sixth-place Jalisco.

Next game:  Mazatlan again hosts Hermosillo tonight.

Gigantes Recap

The Gigantes game against Estrellas was rained out.  Rain has played havoc with the Dominican League schedule.  There are teams who have played as many as eight games, and teams who have played as few as three.  The Gigantes remain 2-2.  They are in third place, a half game behind the Toros del Este and the Tigres del Licey.  They were scheduled to play Licey tonight, but it appears that game has already been postponed.  Their next game will be Friday, when they host the Toros.
