  1. I feel guilty that I am not at the game. But what time would I have to leave work (early) to drive from west LA to Anaheim in rush hour traffic? I shudder to think. Wish this had been a weekend series so I could go to my first Twins game in CA.

    1. I attended a few games when I lived in Torrance/Redondo area, but I think those were weekend games. I would have definitely left work early otherwise.

    2. It honestly didn't occur to me until now that I was going to miss the perfect opportunity to get another stadium knocked off my list.

  2. Revere - 19 SB
    Mauer - 20 RBI

Spooky (when you return with the groceries), wanna bet that Revere finishes 2011 with more SB than Mauer RBIs?

(Note that I didn't ask it the other way around)

    1. I'm always eager for a pro-Mauer bet. It only took us 110 games, but consider it done.

Hey, we can pay off this bet in person, if we want.

      1. Back so soon? I was just shutting down. But you do realize I phrased it so that you were taking the Revere action? I may defend Blackburn sometimes, but I'm not completely gone...

        1. Oh, hell, I see now.

Uh, yeah, I'm not going to bet against Mauer there. Especially since Revere doesn't get on base often.

I might change my mind by the end of the game, though. When the bet is an orange, I probably don't need to be all that careful.

  3. Rhu, you may be holding down the fort solo (Sean did post once). I am headed home, will listen on the car radio. Figured a Torii strikeout means I can leave on a happy note.

    1. I'm sorta around, but I'm gonna try to go to bed soon. I've not been sleeping well lately, so I might go to bed early tonight. Or stay up until I'm absolutely exhausted to try to cut down on the pillow thinking.

  4. Oh, hey. I just noticed that the Ace portion of our rotation is pitching tonight. Sweet.

  5. Quick questions for those who do not know the answer already, how many homers does elm'n have this season?

    1. Kevin James is going to be so zany in that movie. And yes, I know I have already made that joke. I will continue to do so.

    1. MLBN told me today that Pedroia has a 25 game Fenway hit streak. Career BA in a state tops that.

      1. Last year they showed Cuddyer's traditional Triple Crown stats on Sundays. That might be the only thing dumber than career BA in California. Shockingly, the Cali list was a list of four guys who all hit a lot in general.

  6. Anyone else try Out of the Park Baseball for the iDevice of your choice? Decided to dabble around with it a little bit as the game started and suddenly it is 3-1 and you guys are telling me Delmon hit a homerun!?!? Miss a little, miss a lot.

            1. Zack, it's pretty easy.
              M-I-E-N-T-K-I-E-W-I-C-Z!

Now that he and Grudzielanek are retired, I need a few new players with Slavic surnames to memorize the spellings of.

  7. This new pitch count thing during every pith is extremely annoying. I loved how sports coverage had gone back to being very minimalist in Fox NFL games and World Cup games, but this is not a step in the right direction.

    1. I recently watched in HD for the first time in a while and was annoyed by the pitch tracker on every pitch.

      1. I'm dumb, just realized it is unfortunately here on my standard-def feed. No clue how long it has been there.

  8. Yeah, it's always those walks that seem to score, except for the thousands upon thousands of times they don't.

On one hand, I want to see a comparison of leadoff walks scoring vs. leadoff singles. On the other hand, that's a lot of research to prove something I already know.

    1. Dave Smith from Retrosheet.org did that research for a SABR convention a few years ago that I attended. Walks scored just as frequently (but no more, no less) than singles.

        1. Well he also runs Retrosheet, so I think he had all the data in a database on his comp and it was fairly easy for him to manipulate.

  9. Anytime you throw 175 pitches in an inning and only allow 3 runs you have gotta take it.

    1. Even if you allow 4 runs it is still an acceptable outcome with 200 pitches.

  10. Wow. He was 1 for 1 against Piniero with a HR coming into the game. And I picked Mauer in HRBTS...

  11. Next year Delmon can be the DH. Maybe when it's irrelevant that he doesn't have a D, he'll work harder on his O? Morneau/Mauer can DH against tough right handers.

      1. I can't wait until 2013 when we lament the fact that elm'n no longer plays for the team when the 7th batter in the batting order comes up with a man on base and the Twins down one.

        1. I promise you I will never lament the fact that Delmon no longer plays for this team, if and when that comes to pass.

    1. Game 162. I was at that game. I still have my last regular season game* at the Metrodome certificate.

      *except it wasn't.

  12. "As a former pitcher, I didn't want my defense to be charged with errors..."

...what does being a pitcher have to do with it? Is he really suggesting he's noble for preferring the hit to his ERA so his defense's feelings weren't hurt by an error?

  13. Woah!

And as @SamMillerOCR points out: Delmon Young is now 3-for-3 with 3 homers off Joel Pineiro for his career.

        1. I had that one too but I didn't make it clear. Delmon was the only Twin to have a homer against Pineiro on the HRBTS board coming into the game.

  14. This pitcher is not very good at baseball. The White Sox should trade for him next year.

  15. Wait, they brought in a LHP to face Cuddy with the bases loaded. That doesn't make sense.

      1. Ron Roenicke's managerial career is far to young to discuss, but Bud Black and Joe Maddon must have learned a thing or two working for Scioscia.

  16. MLBN talking about "going with the stats" for picking Takahashi to pitch to Cuddyer. Keep citing this year's stats while completely ignoring in three times the sample size last year that righties hit better against him.

    1. MLBN had a great opportunity to really get the right analysts who would call teams on their BS. Instead, they went with the same old traditionalists who can't understand why BA might not tell a very important story. It's a drag.

              1. By the way, in the full version of Jon Miller's discussion of newer stats, Miller looks better than he did based on the excerpt that made the film. He says that as a broadcaster, it would take too much time to break these statistics down and introduce them. But at least he realizes that they're useful. Yet, he still pronounces OPS as "ops".

      1. Suck it, Scioscia.

My only hope is that when Ozzie quits/is fired/retires from the ChiSox, that Kenny Williams/His replacement/His replacement's replacement finds a way to hire Scioscia to manage the Sox.

  17. I feel like Sweatsocks has been in there for ages, but that's only two innings for him.

Bless y'all that stick with me tonight. This one's going to be a lot longer than last night's.

        1. Yeah. I have three sleeping kids set to wake up at 6:00 and the wife's still in the hospital with the new one. I'm going to watch the rest in bed. Bring home a win.

          The Tigers will fade.

        2. I've got to work on my Survivor entry since I have all day meetings tomorrow, so what the hell. I'll be around.

            1. I'm actually really happy with my idea. Now to see if I can pitch it properly. I'm much less confident in that.

  18. Okay, so the hot, mosquito-filled cabin lasted a lot longer than I thought it would, but I'm here now.

So, let's get this all out.

    Et tu, Baker?
    DelmOOn!
    CUDDY!!

    1. Baker had that amazing combination of bad location and bad luck in the third, and the Angels fouled everything off.

He didn't look as bad as the line to me, but after a 46-pitch inning I'm not surprised he came out.

      1. I was kind of half listening on the radio, and I could practically hear the bad luck through the radio. Still disappointing.

        1. Tough part is, he was hitting his spots pretty well in the first couple of innings...only 8 pitches in the 2nd. I began to hope that the bullpen was in line for a night off.

              1. Someone said before that Liriano's pitches + Blackburn's mind would be one hell of a pitcher.
I think Sagesmoke's mind needs to be in the picture, too.

                  1. Not brains, but mental makeup.
I didn't want to use "guts" or "drive" or "will to succeed" or whatever the hell else.

  19. Rhu_ru: Paul Molitor was the trivia answer.
Only player to hit for the cycle against the Twins and also play for the Twins.
May 15, 1991 he hit for the cycle in the HHH.

  20. Dick says Cuddyer is reminding him more and more of Paul Konerko. Cuddyer "means that much" to the middle of the Twins lineup.

Dick, you can just like him, and say he's good, without making a stupid comparison.

      1. He made a point to mention clutch hits. I really, really want someone to point out to him that clutch hitters are a product of viewer perception, not reality.

        1. Nobody remembers when Cuddyer had three HRs and four RBIs for like the first six weeks of the season.

  21. God dammit they're bumping Dan Haren to pitch tomorrow? Ugh.

I sure wish the Twins had traded for him last year.

      1. repository:

On July 25, 2010, Haren was traded to the Angels for starting pitcher Joe Saunders, and minor league pitchers Rafael Rodríguez, Patrick Corbin, and Tyler Skaggs

      2. Tyler Skaggs was probably the center piece of the trade. They also sent Joe Saunders, a reliever named Rafael Rodriguez, and a single-A starter named Patrick Corbin.

      1. I heard the radio guys say something. I wondered if the Royals had waived him or released him or something like that.
Pitching like that isn't going to help his ERA of 11.6. (Now 13.5)

    1. If it means the Twins score 11 runs every game for the rest of the year, I gladly accept our new pod people overlords baseball players.

  22. has anyone watching the angels feed noticed that whenever a pitch comes in, or a play on the field is made, they crank up the crown noise. it's really annoying.

    1. I hope we're saying the same thing about Kevin Slowey after he gets called up on Friday to pitch for Blackburn and is lights out all the way until the end of the season.
