Pixel Perfect Memories: CDX

Release Date:  2006
System:  Flash
Developer:  Preloaded

You remember how most full-motion video games suck?  This is not one of them.

A marvelous Flash game produced by the BBC, CDX certainly uses the engine for all its worth.  You star as a prop collector who is down in Tunis when you break your legs in a motorcycle accident.  Suffering from retrograde amnesia and confined to a wheelchair, your only connection with the outside world from your tiny apartment is your computer (which thankfully has broadband) and your telephone.  The plot revolves around a dagger, one of the props you bought in your previous job; apparently, it is a rare artifact that some pretty important people would do anything to get their hands on.  Your job is to learn more about the dagger while saving yourown skin.

While the game takes only about two to three hours to complete, it is packed with so much atmosphere and ingenuity that I would recommend it to just about anyone.  Live actors are used, and they are mostly excellent, especially the antagonist in a brief but powerful role.  Puzzles are fun and fit seamlessly with the environment. And if you're at all a history buff, there is plenty of juicy information to whet your appetite. The only annoyances are a couple of pointless red herrings and an early arcade sequence that is quite boring. Thankfully, the game ends with an intense, deliciously smart arcade game that puts an exclamation point on this jam-packed adventure.

  1. I've been working on Bioshock and Assassin's Creed II. I love buying games way after they are released and are damn cheap.

Assassin's Creed II is definitely better than the first in pretty much every single way. Its great to hear competent voice acting. I'm also glad I got these two games right at the same time. Assassin's Creed II is a great way to come down from the intensity of Bioshock. I can only play it for a couple hours at a time before my nerves need a break.

That's what I usually do. FIFA 11 was the first time I'd bought a current year game since FIFA 06. And then I hardly played it anyway. On a related note, if anyone's interested in a PS3, I'm selling mine before the move.

            1. Yep, can't take it with me because Czech TVs are PAL, not NTSC. My brother doesn't want it - him and all his friends are 360 people. It's got a ethernet cable, HDMI cable, two controllers and 9 or 10 games. Drop me an email at acm006 via google's mail if you're interested and we'll try to work something out.

  2. I'm putting every video game related minute into Red Dead Revolver. The character of John Marston might be one of my favorite video game characters at this point. The shooting mechanics are decent (and the dead eye makes things a lot more forgiving, as well). The missions are varied and interesting, and none have frustrated me to this point (though I may not be to the race that Cheaptoy referenced in a game log a week or two back). I never thought I'd actually finish a Rockstar game, but barring catastrophic 360 failure (but what are the odds of that, right?), it's happening with this one.

I did boot up Babel the other night, but only got a couple of screens in before my wife decided that vacuuming and laundry might be a better use of my time.

    1. LA Niore is still the first and only Rockstar game I have finished.

  3. I'm playing everything, as always. I'm finishing the evil playthrough of inFamous, which is way less fun than the heroic playthrough, as I suspected it would be. I had an Alice marathon in the past few weeks, blasting through the original American McGee's Alice, which is pretty good but has one enemy early on that's nearly a game-breaker, and then the sequel from just a couple of months ago, which is tons of fun. Now, time to finally finish Mass Effect 2.

Because I have PlayStation Plus, I'm messing around with all sorts of (free, for me) casual games right now as well.

I'll be getting God of War III in the mail in a few days. My old company is still sending me swag. I assume they'll notice, eventually, that I don't work there anymore.

    1. The one and only game I own for the PS3 is Infamous. I finished playing it, and felt like it must have been written by chimps.

      1. I was really bummed by the writing of inFamous. That company, Sucker Punch, has gameplay down just fine but they don't have very good writers. Their Sly series on PS2 worked pretty well for them - light tone, enough story to keep the player moving but not enough to highlight the fact that the writing is average at best. With inFamous, though, it really seemed like the writing took a step back. One character actually says "You just don't get it, do you?" which is a line that writers make fun of for its ubiquity despite the fact that nobody has ever said it in real life. Then, the final twist...sigh. Not only obvious, but extremely overused.

I hear the sequel builds upon the original in every way, which is comforting, but I'll still wait for a few price drops.

  4. I recently finished another Telltale game called Puzzle Agentand am about to start on the sequel. It's very similar in style to the Professor Layton games. The puzzles seem to be slightly easier, but there is less droning dialogue to bog things down. On the other hand, the game takes place in a fictional Minnesota town and everyone says ya betchya and ya knooooow I love snoooow.

Anyway, if you like the Layton games, you'd like these.

    1. Puzzle Agent looks like it could be right up my alley. The original is on Steam for $5. Is that how you'd recommend acquiring the game?

      1. That's the going rate. A month ago they had a deal where if you bought the second game ($9.99) the first one was free. Don't think that's the deal anymore, though.

I don't know how long the second game is, but the first one's pretty short. But hey, five bucks.

  5. I haven't had much time for games in the last month as I've tied together the loose ends at my last job. I'm hoping that now with more free time I can play some damn games. They're paying me out the week of vacation I was owed, so I'm going to buy Deus Ex: Human Revolution tomorrow. Pretty excited to try that out.

    1. Oh, hey, let me know how that is. I'll be eager to try it once it makes it to the Platinum Hits discount.
