Friday Music Day: March 23, 2012

In which we anticipate meeting the Spoonsman.
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0_zzCLLRvE

Yesterday was the first day since we moved AJR to her toddler bed. Then we moved LBR into the crib (from the bassinet). At the same time, our fridge started burning or something, and all our exposed food smelled like burning plastic and we decided after the repairman came that we needed to defrost and clean to get that smell out. And LBR's sleep schedule was all mucked up by EAR trying to figure out if we need a new fridge or not. And then AJR decided after two naps and one entire night in the bed that she was going to push it and keep getting up. And HPR took his entire shower with the curtain on the outside of the tub. This was the type of night for which Dominoes was invented. Long way of saying I've got no real music thoughts... other than "Lydia Loveless, Peaking Lights, Lydia Loveless, Peaking Lights, ... "

Post your random ten and I'll see some of you tonight. Oh, and is it cliche to still wear the DePaula jersey?

    1. Wait... The Main TV Theme from Flight? That's kind of a wasted spot on the list... you should have just picked one of theirs and listed it instead. I think we would have all understood.

Although now I'm picturing Bret drumming with silverware. Also an orca.

      1. Heh, it's short, but sweet - and without fail, good for an eyeroll from the wife.

There are any number of songs (even a few from the second season of the TV show) that would have been better, though.

        1. I love so many of them, but I think their single best song came from the 2nd season. It's not hard to figure out.

  3. 1. Everybody's Fool Evanesence

    * I watched parts of Four Brothers last night. AndrΓ© can act? Wait, I wrote that wrong. Can AndrΓ© act?

    1. He strikes me as someone who has some very specific acting skills. I wouldn't expect a wide range though. I still love him playing all the roles in the "Hey Ya" video though.

              1. Yeah, it could've have been simply a lesson in irony (and it might be to the singer, I wouldn't know), but it really transforms the song. Them's some depressing lyrics for a stomping party song.

                1. The New Standards are pretty awesome. They apparently do an amazing Christmas show every year too. Check out their bio.

    1. For some reason, I have the urge to listen to music by Dave Grohl, Bob Mould or David Harrington.

  5.

  6. Drat. Forgot to put a list together. Time to go generate an exemplar pandora station.

    1. Alright, Pandora is really grouping these similar artists... This might take a while.

  7. 'Follow You Follow Me' - Genesis
'Driven To Tears' - The Police Zenyatta Mondatta
'Hackensack' - Fountains of Wayne Welcome Interstate Managers
'Second Chance' - Peter Bjorn and John Gimmie Some
'Train Kept A-Rollin' - The Yardbirds Ultimate! *

'The Power Of Love' - Huey Lewis and the News The Heart Of Rock and Roll
'Take It to the Limit' - The Eagles
'Double of Nothing' - Booker T & the MGs Hip Hug-Her
'2000 Miles' - The Pretenders Learning To Crawl
'Young Conservatives' - The Kinks State of Confusion

    * I heard a commercial on the radio about the Yardbirds playing at a casino in the sticks of Iowa. I dont know if I would want to see a show by a band that had a rotating cast of performers. According to the Wiki page, 2 original members are on tour. A few years back, the Freeborn County Fair had The Guess Who. I was kinda excited to see that show, but learned Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman are not part of the show and only the drummer had kept the name alive. I suppose if one likes the band and the songs it doesnt matter who is playing.
Anywho, speaking of the nostalgia circuit, Tommy James and most of the Shondells are out there preforming and still sound great. Here is 'Crystal Blue Persuasion'

    1. I may be mistaken, but I think that's the first sighting of Huey Lewis and the News in the 4 some years of FMDs.

  8. Here we go. I made sure to only pick songs that I actually have, so it's a little more accurate than Pandora would otherwise be.

"New Soul" - Yael Naim - Yael Naim
"With Or Without You" - U2 - Joshua Tree
"Walk Like A Man" - Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons - Maid In England
"Tighten Up" - The Black Keys - Brothers
"Time To Pretend" - MGMT - Time To Pretend(EP)
"A Teenager In Love" - Dion - Single
"All In My Head" - Kosheen - All In My Head
"We're Going To Be Friends" - The White Stripes - White Blood Cells
    "Come On Eileen" - Dexy's Midnight Runners - Too-Rye-Ay
"No One's Gonna Love You" - Band of Horses - Cease To Begin

By the way, I have been listening to an old Kosheen album - Resist - a ton this week, and loving it. If you like drum & bass or techno at all, I highly recommend it.

    1. "nEW sOUL" - yAEL nAIM"

Wow, haven't heard that since the says of the iPod commercials.

Solid list, btw... lots of great stuff.

  9. 1. Heaven is a Truck -- Pavement
    2. Paint it Black -- The Rolling Stones
    3. I'm Not Talking -- Hypstrz
    4. Pride (In the Name of Love) -- U2
    5. Peace in the Valley -- Johnny Cash
    6. The Have Nots -- X
    7. Lone Wolf -- The Blasters
    8. Before the Lobotomy -- Green Day
    9. Providence -- Sonic Youth
    10. Roy Walker -- Belle & Sebastian

    Bonus: Overtown -- Charlie Pickett

    1. You'll find it acceptable if I doubt the veracity of this list, based solely on the fact that it contains no GBV, won't you?

        1. I had always chalked up the fact that they appeared so often to the fact that they have 70 to 80 songs per album, and you have all of their albums.

          1. I don't have all their albums but they do take up 10 percent of my 7600 song ipod library (750 songs being about 1/2 of GBV/Pollard output) so odds are I'm gonna get a GBV song in there.

            1. really, only a 65% chance of getting one in ten.
It's about even at 7 songs (52-48 in favor).

  10. No iPod again today, so I don't have a random 10. I am listening to Pilot Talk II by Curren$y. Spitta is probably my favorite current rapper. I love that each of his records/tapes has a pretty set theme and sound. I love his flow. Everything he does is right in my wheel house.

Here's one really dope song. Here's another, which has an actual music video. There's strong language, and the video is probably NSFW so I'll just give you that warning.

So, yeah. Check him out if you haven't and you like that sort of thing.

    01. Lady Godiva's Operation - Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat
    02. Please, Mrs. Henry - Dylan & the Band - The Basement Tapes
    03. I Loves, You Porgy - Miles Davis - Porgy and Bess
    04. There She Goes Again - Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground & Nico
    05. It Would Be So Nice - Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
    06. I Will - Beatles - White Album

    09. Pomp & Pride - Toots & the Maytals - Time Tough
    10. Laugh Kills Lonesome - Michael Nesmith - Tropical Campfires

  12. So I'm playing Robert Plant & Alison Krauss' Raising Sand in my office today. It's been a little while since I've listened to it, one time through made it clear how amazing it really is. I would say that, hands down, this is one of the greatest albums of all time.

    1. this is one of the greatest albums of all time.

I would say it is a very good album, one I like a lot and listen to still. But I just wouldn't go that far.

      1. I'm willing to. Top 10 for me.

What says you for greatest ever, off the top of your head?

        1. What says you for greatest ever, off the top of your head?

My Lord, depends on my mood. Here are some contenders:

Get Happy -- Elvis Costello (50 song bonus track version)
Bee Thousand -- Guided By Voices
Ike Reilly -- Salesmen and Racists
          Wilco -- Sky Blue Sky
          Bizarro -- The Wedding Present
Wowie Zowie (50 song bonus track version) -- Pavement
Howl -- Black Rebel Motorcycle Gang
Live at Budokan -- Cheap Trick
Perfect From Now On -- Built to Spill
          American Recordings -- Johnny Cash

          1. American Recordings -- Johnny Cash

Yep, there is one of those blind spots. That or Unchained.

        2. I'll jump:
          Plastikman - Consumed
Ha Ha Tonka - Novel Sounds...
          Tricky - Pre-Millennium Tension
Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Lie Down in the Light
          The Knife - Silent Shout
The Field - From Here We Go Sublime
          Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
          Meat Puppets - No Joke!
          The Orb - Orblivion
Merle Haggard & the Strangers - Mama Tried
          So So Radio - Dustcovers

I'm keeping off Lydia Loveless and Peaking Lights because I don't have enough distance
I should probably put Jimi or Marley or Patsy or Roy on there, but other than Axis: Bold as Love, they're more about the singles for me.

I haven't done something like this in a long time, so I've probably got some huge blind spot today. Is it Björk? Would Medúlla be above anything on that list?

          1. My iPod just reminded me that I have to get Current 93's Black Ships Ate the Sky on there somehow.
Which also reminds me that Coil's And the Ambulance Slept in his Arms... makes a good case.

        3. Wow. I'd probably end up much more commercial. In no particular order, the must haves for me:

Robert Plant & Allison Kraus - Raising Sand
They Might Be Giants - Flood
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Bruce Springsteen - Born In The U.S.A.
Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning Glory?

          And the maybes:

          Michael Jackson - Thriller
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
Meatloaf - Bat Out Of Hell
          Chumbawumba - WYSIWYG
The Avett Brothers - I And Love And You

Might not be enough distance on Spoon/Avett Bros., but man do I love those albums.

          1. boy, I wouldn't even put that Springsteen, good as it is, on the Boss's top 3-4 (Born to Run; Darkness; The River; The Wild, The Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, with the first three in no particular order at the top).

            1. I can't really play this game, but I will anyway. Here's a few on my list of must-haves in no particular order. I'm not including compilation albums that were important to me, such as Decade or Time of the Zombies or Ray Charles Anthology, all of which definitely made impressions on me.

movie soundtrack to Fiddler on the Roof
              Springsteen, The River
              Dylan, Highway 61 Revisited
              Van Morrison, Moondance
Neil Young, Rust Never Sleeps, After the Gold Rush, and Harvest
Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon
Led Zeppelin, I, II and III
              The B-52s, The B-52s
Johnny Cash, Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison
              The Pretenders, II
              Metallica, Metallica
Talking Heads, 77, but also the single "Take Me To The River" off of Fear of Music

            2. It's the one I really grew up with, and it still just strikes a cord for me. With "Born In The U.S.A." and "Glory Days" I feel like it can make a solid case for being his best.

          2. I can't believe I left Andre 3000's The Love Below off my list. Probably take off Bat Out Of Hell or possibly Thriller in it's place.

        4. In no order, and more "favorite" than "greatest".

...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - Source Tages and Codes
          Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
          Sigur RΓ³s - ( )
          Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory
          Radiohead - OK Computer
The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America
          DJ Shadow - Entroducing
          The National - High Violet
          Pixies - Doolittle

Yeah, a double dip of Oasis. It was them or Radiohead, and I like Morning Glory just a touch more than The Bends.

          1. Ooh, The Bends probably should have made the list, probably Daydream Nation too.

            1. Yeah, now that I'm giving it more thought The Bends has to be on that list somewhere. I just don't know which one I'd want to take off.

                1. I know it. But dammit, I love it so much.

You're right, though. The Bends can have its spot for another one or two years.

Truthfully, I just thought of the xx album. I'm still too near that one, too, but I probably haven't played an album straight through as many times as that one in the past 3 or 4 years.

                  1. I meant distance in that I'm currently in my first infatuation with the album, I mean, I've got albums from 2011, 2009, 2008, 2007, and two from 2006 on my list.

We truly are living in the good old days.

                2. It's been two years, dude. That's plenty of time to know whether something is truly one of your ten favorite albums ever.

                  1. It is. I was just trying to come up with a rationale other than "The National? Meh." in order to persuade him.

                    1. I knew I'd lose you with that.

Honestly, I don't know enough of that album. Like what I've heard, but it doesn't strike me as top-10 all time album material.

Of course, I have Chumbawumba on my list.

                    2. It's tenuous, but I did put "favorite", as opposed to "greatest". That album is chock full of songs which, depending on the mood, can devastate or soar. I've tried explaining this to various people, usually without success. It just seems to be an album that you either 'get' or you don't.

                3. I've been tempted to put The Meadowlands on top of my list since about 6 months after it came out. Nine years later, I feel the same, so I guess it's time to put it up there.

        5. Let's see... favorites (like nibbs) in which just about every song hooks me in some way, in no particular order:

          Arcade Fire - Funeral
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - Born to Run
The Hold Steady - Separation Sunday
Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue
          Cake - Fashion Nugget
Michael Franti & Spearhead - Everyone Deserves Music
          Radiohead - OK Computer
          Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
          U2 - The Joshua Tree
Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory?

          1. For some reason Illinoise is one of those albums that I just don't like. Chicago is an awesome, awesome song. The rest of album completely lets me down.

        6. It's a very fluid ever-changing list, but here are 10 off the top of my head:

The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
          Elvis Costello - Get Happy
          Velvet Underground - Loaded
          Bob Marley - Exodus
          Monkees - Headquarters
Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
          Clash - London Calling
Ennio Morricone - Once Upon A Time in the West
          Neil Young - Decade
          Johnny Cash - Unearthed

          1. That would be my Marley album, if I would have had one. Maybe if he had grabbed the 14 best tracks from it and Kaya as a double-album...

        7. I always struggle with this. The first three or four are pretty much in order, then it's just kind of a jumble after that.

          The Wrens - The Meadowlands
          Ween - The Pod
New Kingdom - Paradise Don't Come Cheap
          UGK - Ridin' Dirty
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
boris - boris at last: -feedbacker-
          Sonic Youth - Sonic Nurse
The Raveonettes - Chain Gang of Love
Butthole Surfers - Hairway to Steven
          Hot Snakes - Suicide Invoice

I'm pretty happy with this list, I suppose.

            1. Did you ever hear any of Vast or Vordul's solo stuff? Some of it is pretty great.

It's a shame there was never a follow up to The Cold Vein, the production is ridiculous.

        8. Top 10...err, whatever - I like these ones (in no particular order)

The Beatles - The White Album
Nirvana - Unplugged in New York
          Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
          U2 - The Joshua Tree
          Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
          Pearl Jam - Ten/Vs.
Band Of Horses - Cease to Begin
Bill Evans - Portrait In Jazz
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II
Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue
Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks/Blonde on Blonde
Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory?
          Broken Bells - Broken Bells

    2. These are album I can go back to, listen twice a day, and still not get tired of them. I guess thats more 'favorites' than best, but I dont think one can ever label a 'best album' because there is so much music out there, and so many categories... anywho no order

The Kinks - Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire)
The Kinks - Lola Vs Powerman and the Moneygoround, Pt 1
The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed
      The Beatles - Abbey Road
Elvis Costello - This Years Model
      The Pixies - Doolittle
      Squirrel Nut Zippers - Hot
      White Stripes - Elephant
      Led Zeppelin - II
      Pretenders - Pretenders

its a safe list (I guess it reflects my personality, playing it safe), but like I said, these are album I can listen to 300 times a year and never get tired of them.

  13. 1. Boom Boom Satellites “4 A Moment of Silence (Trapezoid Mix By Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto)”* Push Eject
    2. Steve Reich “Piano Phase” Early Works
    3. Ha Ha Tonka “The Horse in Motion” Novel Sounds of the Nouveau South
    4. Peaking Lights “Owls Barning” Imaginary Falcons*
    5. Linfinity “The Game” Halloween Single 2011

    6. Twilight Circus Sound System “Carousel” Horsie*
    7. Tracey Thorn “Oh, the Divorces!” Love and Its Opposite
    8. Coil “Answers Come In Dreams II (Remix by Jack Dangers)” The Snow EP*
    9. Sonic Youth “Theresa's Sound-World” Dirty*
    T. Kate Simko “Beneath” Lights Out
    B. Autechre “Second Bad Vilbel” Tri Repetae++

    Notes:
    1. Everything that Jack Dangers did around this time sounds almost exactly the same. He just uses the same hip-hop drum beat and applies different sounds to it. In this case, most of those sounds are sampled from BBS's "4 a Moment of Silence", but basically this song is no different than "Prime Audio Soup". Not that this is bad or boring, just that a compilation of MBM's biggest hits and remixes of 1995-2000 would be.

    3. Read a recent interview with Brian Roberts of HHT. He said they'll be touring this summer, but that while the band is taking a break from touring, they've written a bunch of material and will record in fall 2012 for a planned spring 2013 release. Good, because if I can't set my watch by their touring/recording/release schedule, I don't know what I'd do. This will be their fourth album as HHT. BITBB was released in 2007, NSOTNS in May 2009, and DOAD in March or April 2011, so I pegged a March-April release for Album 4, but hadn't heard that they'd started on the material for it.

    4. I'm so in love with their album from last year, 936, that I checked out their earlier work, when they were noisier. It's okay, but things really came together on 936. Kindof reminds me of Zola Jesus's work before the Stridulum/Valusia EPs: Not great, not awful, but I would have never listened to it had it not preceded the transforation to fantastic that got me hooked. Also, both came out of a hazy, noisy place like Ariel Pink but without sucking like Mr. Pink. And, both artists now live in California after leaving Wisconsin behind.

Digression: I think that because 2011 didn't have many overly-acclaimed megaworks by bands like Arcade Fire or Radiohead that I felt I should listen to more at the year's end, I gave myself the freedom to listen to whatever I felt like, and ended up really digging on Peaking Lights and Lydia Loveless more than I would have otherwise.

    6. Until 936 came along, this was definitely my favorite dub album, Holland's finest. It now may only be my second-favorite.

    8. Jack Dangers day! A bit before Dangers got so same-y, there's a bit more variation in his sound here. This was the first thing I ever heard from Coil, other than their remixes of Nine Inch Nails (The Fixed EP). I saw this at Ernie November's ('Kato), probably in spring 1995 on a day when there wasn't much else that intrigued me, so I went for a cheap EP. I didn't realized it was out of print and that I could come to love Coil much more than NIN. This doesn't sound much like anything else Coil did, it's basically "Minimal House" about a dozen years before that become the predominant sound in the "Techno" world.

    9. R.I.P. Mike Kelley, died less than two months ago.

    1. Might be our usage, but bassinet: little, just for newborns, might rock.
Crib: Bigger, uses a "crib mattress", can hold less-acrobatic toddlers.

        1. Same here. When I was younger you'd played the Beatles if you wanted to get laid; the Stones if you wanted to get F'd up. The Pretenders if you wanted both.

    1. Latest M. Gladwell book Outliers defines the 10,000 Hour Rule - the key to success in any field is less about intelligence (still needed) but more about practicing a particular task for 10,000 hours - cites example of Beatles in Hamburg.
