"What about Ha Ha Tonka?"
"Yes."
"Lydia Loveless?"
"Yes."
"Scott. H. Biram?"
"Yes."
"Bobby Bare Jr. or the Bottle Rockets?"
"Dad! Those all come from the same label!"
"Yeah, right Lisa. A wonderful, magical label."
That's how I feel some days. Whenever Bloodshot announces a new artist on their label, I figure there's a 50/50 chance they're soon gonna be my new favorite band.

*Definitely one of my "favorite" album purchases of all time. I bought this double-CD album at the Tower Records in Piccadilly Circus when I was there for New Year's '98. I knew about three songs on the album (Radiohead, Oasis, Bush), but it exposed me to a bunch of great bands who were "big in Europe" but hadn't really crossed over (at least to mainstream Twin Cities radio).
Any chance that SY track is acoustic? I know that Thurston & Lee did a few acoustic radio shows alone on that tour. (Which now appears that maybe it should have been a sign of the impending split.)
Nope, not an acoustic version.
I really shouldn't take the time to expand upon these, so I won't...

1 & 2 - Remnants of a past taste that I'd be happy to purge from my library if I ever did that kind of thing.
5. When this song comes on I'm always kind of surprised by it, and, you know, kind of enjoy it.
7. Possibly my favorite Amy Winehouse (but probably only because Rehab was so overplayed)
Bonus: It makes me so happy that this song came up in a list. I had totally forgotten about it, but yup, the Muppets do music well.
"Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops)" - Blu Cantrell
Whatever summer it was this song came out was the first time I met/stayed with my really good friend in the Cities. He'd just moved down there, a friend of a guy I went to college with. We went down to stay with him one weekend. I primarily went down to play the Dance Dance Revolution machine at the Maplewood Mall. Anyway, as we drove around that weekend, he had KDWB on in his car the whole time. We heard this song and "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" by Eve & Gwen Stefani every time we got in the car to go from one place to the next. It went from annoying to hysterical pretty quickly as we started to predict exactly when it would come on.
Anyway, the moral of the story is that seeing this on your list has put "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" in my head all day, so thanks PHIL.
Sorry.
Also, I've heard a bluegrass version of "Hit 'em Up Style" by the Carolina Chocolate Drops. It's interesting the first time, and after that it, like the original, is bad.
1 & 2: The only two of yours that I might have had on my iPod. I don't, but I might have.
I always get "Hit Em Up Style (Oops)" confused with Tweet's "Oops (There Goes My Shirt)", which I've had on my iPod with frequency.
I find it surprising that you wouldn't have had some of the others. Is that an indictment of my music?
Not all of it, but the closest I ever got to the BeeGees was almost going after ABBA's "Dancing Queen" a few years back. I was afraid it would only push me deeper into depression, so I relented.

Has anyone ever changed a battery in an iPod? I have some serious battery issues with my 32g ipod. I know there are videos on youtube and you can buy a battery for relatively cheap on-line but was wondering if anyone had actually done it successfully. I really don't want to buy a new ipod but I know it might be in the cards if I can't the battery issue solve.
As an alternative has anyone done iTunes Match? It looks pretty interesting. iTunes will look at your entire library and save it to the cloud, including cds you ripped, music you got from a different service, or even illegally downloaded. If they have the song in iTunes they will use that version at the highest bpm. If they don't they will use your version. Then those songs will be available to any device you own and with a wireless connection. I would then have my entire library available to my 16g iPhone. It costs $25.00 a year for the service. Something I'm seriously thinking about. Thoughts?
i needed a new battery. i walked into the apple store, handed them my ipod and $50, they went in the back a grabbed a new (well, most likely refurbished) ipod.
This is what I'm afraid of. See I keep meticulous records of what songs I play (for instance I make sure and play every song on my ipod once a year). I don't sync the iPod with the home computer because the rest of the family's crappy songs are also on it. If they gave me a new ipod would I lose all that history?
if it's not synced on the computer then how do you keep track of it?
but yes, it's a blank ipod. if everything's in itunes though, it will just add it on the ipod with resetting everything (i can relate as i like to keep track of play counts, and have had it reset a couple times so far).
I've changed the battery with good success two or three times in the past. The case will get scuffed up a bit in the process, though. Still, I use the thing for music, and $12 or $15 or whatever is much less than $50.
There are detailed instructions available for all of the iDevices. Some are more difficult to repair than others though.

Goodbye, Lane.
How's the rest of that R. Saadiq album? I only have the title track.
Damn good. He leans heavy on some retro influences, but those influences are solid as hell.
Thanks.

And the bonus track is because I love Spitta and I'm glad his new album finally dropped.
I felt the same way about Matador Records as you do about Bloodshot, AMR. If it said Matador on the spine, quality was within. In addition to seminal records from the likes of Pavement, Yo La Tengo, Cat Power, Belle and Sebastian, and Guided by Voices, they had a slew of other "lesser" acts that released some very cool music on the label: Bettie Serveert, Quickspace, Interpol, Chavez, Silkworm and Helium, to name a few. It was also the home of Teenage Fanclub's debut and Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville.
And then, probably ten plus years after you've kindof moved on, they go and sign Sonic Youth!
Modest Mouse – World at Large
The White Stripes – Seven Nation Army
Blink-182 – I Miss You
MGMT – Time To Pretend
Modest Mouse – Dashboard
Arctic Monkeys – Mardy Bum
Cage The Elephant – Ain't No Rest for the Wicked
Gorillaz – Clint Eastwood
Metric – The Police And The Private
The Cardigans – Lovefool
This is a list I can get behind. "Time To Pretend" and "Love Fool"? Nice.
The bass riff on Seven Nation Army is to die for.
Yiup!
I have noticed that crowds at sporting events (mainly soccer) will chant that bass part from Seven Nation Army (whooooaaaaa whoawhoawhoa whoa).
I often forget just how much I loved Elephant when it came out. What a great album.
I think I remember reading that it's not actually bass, Jack White just used some crazy pedal effect to make his guitar sound like a bass.
i also believe this to be true, though i don't think it's that crazy of an effect.
.
Deep Water - Portishead - Third
Pigs in Zen - Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking
Standing in the Shower ... Thinking - Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking

Red Star - EMA - Past Lives Martyred Saints
Hotel Yorba - The White Stripes - White Blood Cells
Drunkship of Lanterns - The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium
Monsoons - Puscifer - Conditions of My Parole
Shocking list.
The Hives have a new album out called Lex Hives. I have given it a couple of listens and its a good, but not great album. Its sounds like a rougher version of their last release The Black and White Album, and with less The Neptunes influence. Tyrannosaurus Hives remains my favorite Hives (and one of my favorite, 'inner circle HOF') album.
Some standout songs are: '1000 Answers', 'Patrolling Days', 'These Spectacles Reveal the Nostalgics'
Agreed, Tyrannosaurus Hives is their best. I haven't heard much that makes me want to get their latest.
I should really give it a try. I've never disliked a thing they've done, including Black and White Album (different and scattershot as hell, but good).
I'm not nearly as excited for this as I would've been maybe two or three years ago, though.
Ugh, The Black and White Album. What a terrible idea that was. I'm glad that they're going back to a rougher sound, but I don't think they'll ever recapture the infectious lighting-in-a-bottle energy of their early stuff.
Oops, this is supposed to be in reply to dw's Hives discussion. I'm struggling today.
01. Walk On By – Dionne Warwick
02. Faded Love – Patsy Cline
03. Mr. Magic – Grover Washington, Jr.
04. Fool for a Cigarette – Ry Cooder
05. Pencil Thin Mustache – Jimmy Buffet
06. Nowhere Man – The Beatles
07. Johnny B. Goode – Stray Cats
08. Tobacco Road – Johnny and Edgar Winter
09. There’s a Tear in My Beer – Hank Williams, Sr.
10. Wild West End – Dire Straits
This list probably ought to carry an Old Fart warning label on it. Also, none of the songe from it came up today, but I've really been enjoying Love is a Four Letter Word by Jason Mraz.
09. There’s a Tear in My Beer – Hank Williams, Sr.
I would maintain that you never have to put the Sr. behind Hank's name. HWII should always be identified as Jr. but Hank needs no such identifier.
As far as I'm concerned there is only the one Hank Williams.
nah, but the good hank williams' skip a generation.
Ok, I'll give you III.
Are you ready for some AssJack?
I didn't see this post last week, but thank you for referencing the best Simpson's episode of all time as well as one of the greatest exchanges from that episode. Others include:
The morning when Homer's not talking to Lisa
The "It's still good, it's still good"
And of course the whole educational video on meat.
