  1. Just did a 2-bridges run this morning in Cambridge, and learned how long Harvard bridge is.

  2. I cant remember the last time it was only 65 degrees and comfortable humidity at 6am. crazy.

    1. When it's 65 degrees at 6 pm, let me know then you'll really have something!

  3. Billions and Billions. For the mathematicians in the Nation

    1. The U.S. should adopt the long system so the deficit won't look nearly as big.

  4. Greetings from Europe! This trip has been fantastic so far. The Croatian coast was incredible, and New Gal and I are having a blast on our first day in Italy. Hope all is well for everyone back in the states.

  5. Back for my second attempt to pass smog. I did all the little things right, so I should pass the ever-living fire out of the test.

    1. Fial.

the car will be given its unconditional release.

the smog test guy was telling me stories about how other people have failed because of simple-and-cheap-to-fix problems (e.g., clogged fuel filter). My car runs great, but he pointed out that the cat had over-heated, suggesting that way too much unburned fuel was getting to it. He regaled me with how the Bureau of Auto Repairs had, in tests, gotten a cat to fail in 12 seconds. This was not cheering me up any longer.

Anyway, he suggested I take it to a smog diagnostic place. I did. I talked with the guy there -- he said ~$135 for the diagnosis, but that my car likely had internal engine problems and that he wouldn't bother doing the diagnosis if it were his car. Engine rebuild? I don't think so. Blue book on my vehicle is in the $300-$400 range (not accounting for the fact that it can't legally be driven after tomorrow).

So now I am applying to the Bureau of Auto Repairs for eligibility, in 30-60 days, for its vehicle retirement program, which would pay me $1,000, if funds are available, to take it to a registered chop shop for dismantling. Even though the car runs great and still gets 25-28 MPG. Ugh. Oh, plus, I have to pay the registration fees tomorrow. w00t.

That's not the Twins Way. You did the first part right--you gave it some rest and then brought it back, rather than putting it on the disabled list. Now, though, you have to send it out on a minor league rehab assignment and have it fail there before you can give it its unconditional release.

      2. Seems like there would be some kinda snake-oil treatment you could buy from a late-nite 888-number outfit that would blow out the carbon, let you pass the test, and trick those gubmint shysters.

    1. These maps are so bizarre. This week's seems relatively sane compared to last week. Of course St. Louis would rather watch Mets/Dodgers than the Royals. Some of this seems to be that NL cities get NL games and vice versa. Or getting games that feature a division opponent at the expense of watching a team that's located closer.

    2. Greetings & felicitations to our comrades in EMont! (Eastern Montana).

  6. From LEN3:

Righthander Kyle Gibson, on the comeback trail from Tommy John surgery, will pitch an inning for the Twins' Gulf Coast League team on Tuesday.

    [crosses fingers]

  7. Well, it has been a pretty [redacted] week for me, but Mrs S just gave me a Vitamix for my birthday (early). So I got that going for me, which is Awesome. Smoothies at the S house!
