July 21, 2012: It’s in the Air

My promotion last night makes four people who are regulars of either here, the Casa de Leche or both who've significantly increased their quality of life in the past week. It's time to play the lottery, Citizens.

  1. Congratulations, spooky. May this be the start of many more good things for you and your family.

    1. So if I go into Best Buy and tell the guy at the counter "I know Spooky" he/she will set me up with a sweet deal on a home theater?

    1. which raises the question -- should TK get a bust plaque in the real HOF?

Losing career manager record, thanks to having been at the helm of some truly talent-deprived teams (5 90+ loss teams), but two World Series titles. I'd like to see him so honored, but have no idea what the criteria should be for managers.

      1. Two rings aren't enough to be a HOF'er, not with his record. There are a lot of stinkers that could get in with that criteria. I think the two rings are a great honor -- leave it at that.

  2. I just realized nobody here mentioned Aurora, Colorado yesterday. Not that it has to be talked about (after all, drunk drivers kill more people every day than this guy), but it's sad that random shootings happen often enough that none of us feel compelled to say something. Everyone was glued to their televisions for Columbine. Yesterday, people seemed to take it in on radio/TV when it was convenient to do so.

I think I also read once that everyone was glued to their televisions for the Apollo 11 landing, but Apollo 13 didn't get much fanfare at the time.

        1. You tell me. I found out about it through Facebook.

Columbine happened in the middle of the day in April, when networks could hit it live and carry it into the evening news. Aurora happened at midnight, in the summer when TVs are typically off and people are on-the-go. Coverage, at least on TV, is going to be less (and less viewed) regardless of the magnitude of the tragedy.

      1. I watched the live coverage of Columbine from my apartment in Sweden with almost everyone who lived on my floor. Most folks were Swedish, a few Germans, and an Irish guy and all were glued to the coverage late into the evening. I had no idea this had happened until late yesterday, and at that point I felt like I would have gone straight to the forbidden zone.

    1. I just didn't have much to say besides the fact that it's really sad and that it's crazy that some people want to blame Batman rather than talk about a) mental health treatment or b) forbidden zone stuff.

      1. Quite literally my thoughts as well. Well that, and a few more choice expletives.
I do have to admit that occurences like VA Tech and Aurora (where it's a grown-up doing the shooting) do cause me to question some of my forbidden zone beliefs.

          1. My forbidden zone beliefs are based on Mauerism, which has nothing specific to say about this, but promotes good strikezone awareness and firm control of your bat at all times.

    2. Someone did mention James Holmes (some guy on Facebook being confused with the shooter) yesterday, but I had no idea what it was referring to. I finally saw a headline and figured out what had happened. My memory of Columbine was watching it while there was still shooting and/or explosions still going on and kids being rushed out of the school by SWAT teams. By the time 90 percent of the people knew about Aurora, the guy was already arrested and victims were already at the hospital. Still, I flipped through channels about 11 last night and at least five channels were dedicating large amounts of time to the tragedy.

    3. To be clear, I'm not upset nobody said anything. I just found it interesting. What level or type of tragedy does it take to move us enough to talk about it? If 9/11 happened again at midnight, there certainly would be talk all over the board about it. Is it the likelihood of it directly affecting us personally that is the main factor? Or is the main factor how current the tragedy is and if people are still in the process of dying/being rescued?

Perhaps the timing of Columbine (during evening hours) was perfect. Jonesboro happened before Columbine did, and I remember absolutely nothing about it.

      1. Unknowingly, I referred to paying money to see Lydia Loveless instead of Batman at the same moments that people who had paid to see Batman were getting shot for that decision. But then my yesterday was just packed and I never got back here to connect the dots.

      2. I don't think it is a matter of how much of a tragedy it is or how many people die or are hurt, but how much drama can unfold on TV and the Internet. What was so unique about 9/11 is not only was their so much destruction and loss of life but that it unfolded on live worldwide TV. Almost no one saw the first plane hit the Twin Towers but then you had a burning building with thousands of people needing to be rescued then the second tower was hit on live TV then a plane hit the Pentagon (not sure of the exact order here), then the first tower collapsed then another plane crashed then the second tower collapsed. We didn't know if another plane would hit something and all air travel was stopped throughout the country and much of the world. With Columbine, so many people remember that because they actually watched it unfold on TV. There have been many other school shootings but none have been captured on TV the way this one was. By the time I heard about Aurora, we knew all the details. The shooter was captured and we knew how many had been shot and killed. If I was to comment on it, it would essentially be "Yeah, that really sucked." Any other type of discussion would include Forbidden Zone topics, which isn't allowed here and I am glad for that. Today I would comment that a friend of mine's niece and nephew were invited to see that screening of the movie, but decided not to and of their friends that went, one was killed and another was in the hospital with three bullet wounds, but I didn't know about this until this morning.

    1. If Roy and the Russian are still coming, one more wing and I think it's a good offseason.

      1. Don't get me wrong, I am awfully happy with how things have been to this point. I was just commenting on the pigmentation of the team.

    2. Backup center: solved

Really pleased with that since it was rumored he was given another offer.

  3. Hey, the Dude has 3 Homeruns for the Diamondbacks with probably one more at bat in maybe the 8th but for sure in the 9th.
