FMD 7/27/12: Waterama

I'm off to Glenwood for Waterama weekend.

Ten Random music thoughts.
1. I finally got myself a new computer. So I can add and remove tracks from my iPod!
2. It had been more than two months. I can't believe I hadn't more cold sweats.
3. First things added? Lydia Loveless bootlegs (recorded by me).
4. So I've been able to listen to her new songs. I've counted four.
5. Plus, she's got a few good covers in her sets. Elvis Costello's "Allison", Conway Twitty's "Wedding Bells", and Gin Blossoms' "Hey Jealousy" (though my recorder failed me before that).
6. I don't know what I did to my recorder, but I missed recording her entire solo acoustic encore. She played "Things I Do"!
7. I go on a two-week Lydia Lull and then in concert I'm all excited about her stuff again.
8. Her set last Saturday night didn't start until 12:20 or so. I know they may do things like that in big cities on the coasts, but that's un-Minnesotan!
9. That's now her fourth show in town in 8 months. So by my calculations, she should be back in town in October and again in January.
T. I know I wrote up Lana Del Rey's first singles last year. I still like them. Her album impressed me less, but it's still good. But this cover of "Video Games" is weird. I think Boy George's vocals in it are great, with a touch of grit and rasp that makes me want to re-listen, but I really don't feel that there's a connection with the material, or something. Now maybe Lana can cover "Karma Chameleon".
B. Is there a chance that Boy George has been releasing good music lately, and I just can't be bothered to find out. Maybe he could cover some Conway Twitty.

Now, show us what you got!

    1. So, Cheaptoy or anyone else had New Glarus's "IIPA"?
I'm still so in love with Leinie's Big Eddy take on the IIPA.
I haven't actually liked anything from Leinie's since 2002 or so.

      1. I have, indeed. It is excellent, although I don't know if there's any to be found anymore. I haven't had the Big Eddy, though, so I can't compare.

        1. My measuring stick here is Hopslam. Hopslam is angry with hops, Big Eddy IPA* is warm and inviting with basically the same flavor. Maybe a little sweeter, too.

*There's also a Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout and a Big Eddy Imperial Wee Heavy. Both were decent, but nothing that made me say "I'd get cases of this if only it was that price for a sixer. Also, that could ruin my liver or relationships.

          1. The New Glarus would fall closer to the Hopslam. Packed full of citrusy hops, but maybe a little more balanced than the Hopslam.

    2. Motorhead are great to begin with, but after downing a whole lot of any kind of beer they become the greatest thing ever!

That comment holds a lot of truth.

    *Notes:
    1. I've got the three albums from Badmotorfinger through Down on the Upside on my iPod. I've left most of the grunge I listened to in High School behind me, but Soundgarden, who was my favorite even then, still sticks with me. Is it Cornell's vox? I don't know, I never really got into Audioslave (not that I tried, either), but I think it's Thayil's guitar. He has little flourishes that remind me of the leftfield-ier stuff of Tom Morello (who approached the guitar more as a sampler, or so it appeared to me when I listened to RATM), while still being grounded in classic rock riffs, and never sounding cheesy or showoffish. As far as I can tell, a Soundgarden reunion tour would be the only thing that could get me into the Target Center or Xcel Center for a concert. I have a standing promise with a former co-worker that we'll get tickets if the tour ever materializes.

    2. Sister-in-law's boyfriend's band. Droney, shoegazey. Sigur Ros minus wierdness and budget?

    4. I love my (physical) copy of Oval's Systemisch, which arranges the sound of CD skips into elegant ambient pieces. Yet I never really listened to anything else from the man/band. So I tried this. I'm not so into it. CD skips are there, but the elegance is not. This song at least is more about CD-skips rather than using CD skips as a tool towards something greater. (For some reason, the comparison that comes to mind is record-scratching by DJs. Invisibl Skratch Picklz and their like use scratching as the message, while Fog's Andrew Broder used it to communicate personal atomization [I'm thinking of the song "Pneumonia", which is probably the best song out of the Twin Cities since Prince.])

    7. Gotta be the best ever title for a collection of non-album Vinyl singles onto one CD.

    8. Oh that wonderful Late 70's reggae.

    T. The first pop song memory is my Dad singing along with this album. The next time I remember him singing, it was with Roy Orbison's "Blue Angel".

    E. This is a decent pop single. Anyone else familiar with this band? Would checking the rest of the album be worthwhile, or is this an atypical standout?

    1. Thayil's guitar

if i recall correctly, soundgarden has some of the strangest guitars tunings. it was to the point where i didn't bother learning a lot of their songs because i'd spend most of my time tuning and re-tuning (EEBBBB? what the hell is that?!). when i saw them on the superunknown tour, i was imagining the dedicated guitar tuning roadie must mutter under his breath all show long.

  15. Just watched Wilco live at the Newport Folk Fest on NPR All Songs Considered on-line. Fantastic as usual. They played two Woody Guthrie songs with two of Woody's grandchildren (who are probably in their 30's). I don't think they are professional performers but I literally had goose bumps. It was tre cool.

Programming note. The Alabama Shakes will be playing 1:00 Saturday on All Songs Considered. If you can get to it on what promises to be a nice Saturday afternoon, you should try to check it out. Not sure if NPR is archiving the video.
