Greetings from G-town in the Fatherland. It's Sunday and I'm in the office (gotta be productive, you know, since the NFL is on this afternoon and evening!). It's also Sunday and the last day of the month, so a little accounting is in order
My brother was in SBGville this weekend. He's a construction worker and he's been onsite in California since about April, getting home only a couple days a month. Yesterday was the first time I've seen him since he first went out there and it turns out he's been on his own weight loss program, unbeknownst to me. My brother and I look alike, but he's got a substantially different build from me: he's short (5'11) and very muscular. He is much thicker than me normally, but he looks very trim right now. I was pretty impressed. He has been running, but he hurt both of his feet (stress fractures in both). So, that's not too good. I told him to ride the bike, that's what I do. I like the bike because it is low impact. I might add running on the treadmill a little in the future, but I really don't like the running, mainly because the bouncing makes me feel uncomfortable (which means I'm jogging more than running). When I was in cross country and track, I constantly battled shin-splints, which is probably why I didn't like it very much.
Anyway, one of the things I wanted to reward myself with on this diet was to go out and buy a new belt. I had moved three notches in already to the tightest notch, but still the belt was very loose. So, I thought, hey, I can go out and buy myself a cheap belt that will be an interim belt during the weight loss period. This morning, on my way to work, I devised a different plan. I went out to the shop when I got here and got out the drill and drilled two holes to approximate two more notches. Even with the two new notches, I can put the belt to the tightest setting and I probably could go another inch, but my bunched up pants would feel uncomfortable. The notches are an inch apart, meaning that I've lost about five inches around the middle. I think I'll keep adding notches to this belt for a while. I expect to lose about 12 inches around my waist during this process. No sense buying another belt to wear for a couple of months. Drilling holes in the belt is free. And kind of fun.
I was very, very tired on Saturday night, so I rested. Tonight, I'm going to ride the Air Dyne and Mom and Dad's. I hope to ride the next three nights and then it will be a travel day.
Day 68
Weight: 251.0 <== heavy scale, that's really about 248, the best I can figure. My last day here last trip (Sept. 19) I was 256, so that's five pounds in 11 days
Total Loss: 33.5 <== actually about 36.5
September Loss: (actually we'll document that tomorrow)
Week Loss: 0.8 <== actually about 3.8
Notches on the belt: 5
I finished my week going to the gym for full workouts on Thursday and Friday, and some light work on Saturday. Life events have settled down lately, so I'm hoping to get back to a schedule of full workouts M/T/Th/F with light recovery-type workouts on W/Sat and a full rest day on Sunday. Deadlifting on Friday went really well--the good days are always more motivating than the hard days.
I was down to 163 pounds after my workout on Thursday, which had me concerned, but in retrospect, I think I was just really dehydrated. I've re-focused on getting my fluids and I'm back up around 168-170 again.
Nutrition this last week was really good-lots of veggies and home-cooked food.
Light workout for me today. Mile walk on the treadmill at 3.5 pct grade, then the "kickboxing" routine and stretching. I was going to do some home repair (replacing some washer-like doohickeys on the shower door), but Home Despot didn't have the needed parts and I was too late to go across town to a real hardware store.
so I went to Office Depot (for printer ink) and Walmart (for Afta, plus BONUS: I bought the Director's Cut of The Exorcist for five bucks. w00t!) and the grocery store.
Tonight: pork chops, green beans (fresh from the garden), grape tomatoes and steel-cut oat tabbouleh.
Hey now, I don't consider 5'11" short.
My nutrition this weekend was awful because I went back up to my parent's houses. Too much hefty food laying around and I just couldn't help myself. I told my wife, though, that I want to try to get back to a more vegetarian diet with meat only a couple times per week. Hope we can do it.
The average adult American male is 5'8", I think. That seems short to me, but I've read it in a couple of places. I could sleuth around now to be sure, but I prefer to assume I'm tall, just in case that's wrong.
I believe that certain ethnicities tend towards shorter statures, so perhaps that could be why 5'8" seems short (as it does to me).
Also, men shrink as they age past their 60s (a bit) so that could be part of it, too, "average man" including a bunch of seniors, and I believe shorter men have somewhat longer lifespans (all else accounted for).
from this blog post citing CDC data.
The decreasing gap from age 15 to 21 is kind of fascinating.
So 5'10" is the new average of 21-year-olds.
While 5'8" was the average of 21-year-olds a century ago.
I'm 5'9", I've always felt short. It probably doesn't help that J is 6'2"!
naw, 5'11" is short. π
*sets all doorframes at 6'½"*
I am working on improving my productivity this morning.
