October 3, 2012: Milestone

For Cabrera? Nah, for me, as I turn 35 and another season of baseball is over. I'll watch pretty much any postseason MLB game, but please, PLEASE let the Yankees and Tigers be featured as little as possible.

  1. Sorry to infringe on the forbidden zone but we can finally say this for the first time.

    Spooky for president!

      1. Just looked at your FB: you were born 29 days too early to be in the 4Q77 club. Bummer, dude.
Just me, Spoons, Nick Punto, Randy Ruiz, Willie Bloomquist*, Eric Chavez*, Orlando Hudson, Buddy Carlyle*, Jack Wilson*, and Grant Balfour.
        Overall, 175.3 bWAR

BJHess, you're in the lame-o 3Q77 club with Strategery, Eric Hinkse*, Mike Maroth, Mike Ryan, Brent Abernathy, Glenn Williams, and Vicente Padilla*. Only 50.2 bWAR. So sorry.

        *Notable non-Twin and non-WGOMer.

          1. Nothing has made me feel older than finding out that I am old enough to be the father of so many Citizens.

Actually BEING the father of multiple Citizens could go either way.

              1. If I had fathered a child when I was 18, that child would now be 35 years old. I am now muttering Joe Schultz's favorite compound word under my breath.

                  1. My father would be 48 now if he was 18 when I was born (and my birthdate remained the same). In another way of looking at it, I'd be 50 instead of 30 if my father was 18 when I was born (if his birthdate remained the same).

                  2. +2 years. I need to figure out the day when he's exactly double my age now, since I think it will happen this year or very early next year.

                  3. Mine would be 50 instead of 61.
If I'd made a baby at 18, he or she would be 14! But to do that, I'd have had to be...uhm..having..well, you know laughs nervously, turns red and mumbles something unintelligible as he walks away

              2. You are old enough to have fathered 35 year olds? Not me, boyo.

I am old enough to have been capable of it. Not quite old enough to have been experienced.

            1. Wily Mo Peña
Born ten days after you (per fb), debuted Sept 2, 2002 at age 20.
Final MLB game Sept 25, 2011.
Played 127 games for Softbank Hawks of NPL, where he hit .275/.333/.486/.819 for the fourth-best slugging and seventh-best OPS (second and fourth, respectively in the Pacific League).

              So I don't think he's retired.

Armando Gallaraga is one of two players who are the closest to your birthday while being younger. He's not retired. (The other guy, Melvin Dorta, got a cup for the Nationals in July 2006 and another in Sept 2006.)

              1. Heh, I never realized Wily Mo Pena was younger than I. I always thought it was Jeremy Bonderman. Thanks for making me feel less old!

                1. Now that I see what you were going for, I'm pretty sure that April 2nd, 2003 is the first date where someone younger than me played in a major league game, and that was Jeremy Bonderman.

            2. Huh, I'd never thought to look that up. Strictly speaking, it looks like Jamie Vermilyea is the first MLB player younger than I am, though his entire major league career was pitching 6 innings for the Blue Jays in 2007. Still better than my major league career, I suppose.

Looks like Manny Delcarmen is the next closest--he's still kicking around in the International League, but I kind of doubt he'll see much more time in the majors going forward.

                1. I (may) share a birthday with Pedro Strop. Kevin Mulvey is a few weeks older than me and I'm about a month and a half older than Darin Mastroianni.

                2. But was he the first player younger than you to play?
Randy Ruiz is player closest to my age while still being younger, but Aramis Ramirez was born the next year and debuted before anyone born after me in 1977. Adrian Beltre was born a year and a half after me and debuted less than a month after Ramirez.

                  1. Both are true for you, Magoo.
If you had been born two months earlier, it would have been Felix.

                  2. Of the players born in 1986, the earliest any debuted was 2007. Of the 2007 debutees, I'm only older than Hughes, so he's the first player younger than me to play in the Majors. His debut was April 26, 2007. I was 2 months from my 21st birthday and a little over 2 weeks from graduating from Drake.

            3. Has anyone younger than you managed a game? I don't think so, but it seems to be more difficult to find lists of manager ages.

  2. Does anyone know if Capps is gonna pitch tonight?
If not, he should be 60-day'd and call up Slama!

      1. What do you know? You're right.
9th inning in the Monday night loss against the Yankmes.
        1.0 IP, 5BF, 2H, 0R.
Groundout, single up the middle, linedrive single to RF (runner to third), groundout FC at home 6-2-5-1 (runners to 2B and 3B), lineout to CF.

    1. If they call up anybody, it won't be a pitcher since the 4, 5 and 6 hitters in the lineup are out.

        1. So far, what 35 is about to me is learning that a person who's seriously curbed his drinking in the past month probably shouldn't have tallboys of this and this in the same two-hour span.

            1. No, no. I had them last night (and thankfully, didn't work today. It's not an all-time great hangover, but I've been somewhat uncomfortable all day).

  3. The Twins have locked up the fourth pick in the draft, so it is safe to win a game tonight. Woo-hoo!

      1. The Astros might pass on him but I doubt the Cubs would. I've seen a couple mock drafts predict the Twins take Sean Manaea from Indiana State, who was the best pitcher in the Cape Cod League. Of course, this is months away and we still have another college season to play out before the draft.

  4. This year, I've been averaging about two funerals per month. Today is the third of October, and I already have two funerals scheduled for this month. That's not a good sign.

    1. While it doesn't apply to the two this month, one of the reasons I have so many funerals is that ours is the only church in Gettysburg that will do a funeral for those without a church affiliation.

  5. The most AB Mauer's had this year is 6. I've adjusted my outcomes tables after last night's performances and cut down the max AB from 10 to 6. Bolded entries for Cabrera and Trout are lower than if Joe goes 6-6 (his max outcome).

  6. So I just finished the third season of BSG last night. My basic reaction is:

    Spoiler SelectShow
      1. I can respect that. I'm going to pick that back up when I'm done with BSG (I'm >half way through Season 2). Still... get caught up. There's some interesting stuff.

    1. I'm still really ticked off about this.
Add whoever's decision it was to my list with Scioscia and Ventura.

        1. No, I blame Leon Czolgosz.

Scioscia, Ventura, and Czolgosz, let me address you personally:
You're on my list of people that I don't like. Be careful, because I'll be watching for you, and if I see you, I'll try my best to put a minor inconvenience in your way.
          Have a mildly unpleassant day,
          -AMR

  7. I fully admit to being a nerd, but this weekend might bring that to new heights. Thanks to my affiliation with this, I'll be going to my first comic convention. At least I'll be a vendor, and not an attendee.

    1. I'm going to my first official "comic" convention later this fall. I've been to three anime conventions (with another scheduled for next spring), and one fantasy convention. I'm 'bout that life I guess.

      1. thanks. Now if someone besides (ahem, in addition to) Bootsy on the original would respond 😉

  8. greetings from Ireland North. The weather here was perfect today, and allowed me to enjoy Belfast Lough from the deck of the Salty Dog. I'd tell you that I tipped out a bit of the black for my homies, but that would be a lie.

    1. Wrong end of the County, but one of my favorite renditions of the song nonetheless.

              1. Doesn't he struggle during day games, period?

I wonder where he's going to end up next year, something tells me he won't be a Ranger.

            1. Yeah, this is a wild game. Anyone who's not watching it needs to start. 7-5 A's in the bottom of the fourth. They've scored six in this inning.

              1. I'll be Gameloggin' this one with you, spoons. Too much craziness has already happened for me to turn this one off before it ends.

                1. I'm here for the next 15 minutes or so. There's a running store about 2 blocks from me that hosts free group runs every Wednesday night. I need to get out and do something, so I'm gonna go for a run at 6.

        1. How is it that every single team (besides the Twins) can find about four relievers who can come in an strike out everyone?

              1. Yes, I just got nibbished. (AMR's response may as well have told me to suck it.)

                1. Actually, I read "can strike people out"
Robertson can get strikeouts with that K/9 in the high teens, but he can't strike everyone out with that K/BB barely north of 1.00.

    1. He's been really useful for the A's, at least by fWAR he's been above average three straight years now. He's also not all that old. I could see him playing 'til age 35 or 36.

      1. Totally, my comment comes from having seen him play for or against (I can't remember which) the Bisons in 2003/4.

      1. I did too! The West, too!

I guess the Yankees could still be the wild card, right? I guess the Rangers could come back in their game, too (though I really hope they don't).

    1. Plenty of great bits in that thread.
I do think [the Diamondbacks] win the division with ease, though. -- They're 81-80 right now, 13 GB.
CYN: R.A. Dickey -- I doubt it, but it could actually happen. socal's prediction might be the best longshot one.

        1. rWAR seems to be the ruling metric for season awards now and Dickey is in third.

          Rk WAR
          1 Clayton Kershaw* 5.8
          2 Johnny Cueto 5.7
          3 R.A. Dickey 5.5
          4 Gio Gonzalez* 4.6
          5 Jordan Zimmermann 4.4

He's close enough though that there's a reasonable chance. Kershaw might have some anti-repeat bias against him and now Dickey revealed he's been pitching through pain all season.

    2. Well, if the Tigers win today they'll have won the exact number of games I predicted. I'll just disregard all my other picks (which were horrible) and be proud of that.

    3. I might hit on ALCY, NLROY (probably), got a hit on Braves as NLWC and Gints as NLW.
Also, I had Tigers and Cards in playoffs.
Is Mauer for AL Comeback likely?

I am still mad at myself for finally giving up on the O's in my preseason predictions. If I hadn't, I'd've had them take the division and Showalter as AL MOY:
"Plus, Showalter's still in Baltimore, and he's gonna get the team to the cusp before someone else gets them to the promised land."

      Phil went 4-for-6 on divisions.

  9. So, if the Rangers lose, and lose the play in game, how many MVP votes do you think Michael Young will still get? You know... being the least valuable player in baseball this year and all on a team that will potentially end up failing out of the playoffs specifically because he was playing for them.

  10. Wow. The 13-game comeback by the A's is almost complete. This will be the fifth occurrence of that feat.

This will also be the third time in history that a division winner only spent a single day all alone in first place. The last time was the 2006 Minnesota Twins, but you already knew that.

      1. Honestly I meant to put this under your Young comment above, but couldn't find it when I was scrolling. Can't stand that guy.

      1. Yeah. Crud. I was just thinking how cool it was that his son was born right as his team pulled this great comeback. I feel horrible for him.

    1. as someone that could have been in a similar situation if not for some very cognizant and proactive doctors, i can only feel empathy, but mostly profound sorrow on his behalf.
