November 18, 2012: Rested, Hopefully

This is my first chance to sleep past 6 for about a week and a half, so I hope my body plays along. If you see me here early, I'll be in a bad mood. Well, worse than normal.

  1. Unicorn sighting

Adelman still raving about Rubio. "He's so smart." Says RR knew all the plays and where everyone needed to be despite being out

  2. Back from Joplin, MO. Sore and tired, but we made a (minuscule) dent in the rebuilding process there. Still a large swath of open lots through the town where the tornado ravaged it, with new construction mixed with bare slabs, scrub growth, and dead twisted trees.

I spent the morning with half of our group of ten pitching remains of a torn-down house into large dumpsters, and the afternoon we all mudded and sanded drywall (which I despise), but I had a cheerful and willing heart. It was neat to work with a couple young college grads from the NYC area with the Jewish Disaster Response Corps, as well as seeing the great work being done by volunteers in Americorps.

We spent the second day painting and cleaning a section of one of the host churches in Joplin. It has housed over 3000 volunteer workers since May 2011, and had taken a beating, so it was nice to give it back some TLC. I have to say that the church where we stayed was very kind, giving us pretty much free reign, and the men's group cooked us breakfast Saturday before they had their own breakfast meeting. At this point I'm sure it's pretty much old hat for them to have "guests" staying there, but it was very welcoming.

While there are lots of other areas needing help in the news lately, it's good to see that organizations are still keeping Joplin on their radars.

  3. I dont know how good Gophers hoopster Rodney Williams is (can he make it in the NBA?), but my goodness he can jump and dunk with the best of them.

    1. After I tore my ACL (but before I got around to going to the doctor to actually get it diagnosed a month later), I went bowling. Twice during the first five frames, my knee completely caved in without absolutely zero strength. That experience bowling was one of the reasons I decided to finally get checked out.
