In nominations for things that deserve their awards:
M.I.A.'s "Bad Girls" gets a music video nom.
Past FMD-discussed singles by Gotye and Fun[period] got lots of mileage for their authors/performers.
Frank Ocean also has the potential to win a lot, and the Alabama Shakes got nominated a few times, too.
Best New Artist nominee Hunter Hayes is, as far as I know not a pseudonym for Citizen-in-exile Carter Hayes.
I'm happy to see that they got rid of their female/male split categories. Why does Taylor Swift or whomever need to win for best solo vocal performance, best female vocal performance, best country perfomance, best solo country performance, and best female country performance?
Also, I see they consolidated many genres like Tejano, Polka, Zydeco, Native Hawaiian, etc. into fewer broader categories, like "Regional Roots Music", and "Regional Mexican Music (Including Tejano)".
Björk got nominated for the worst thing she's ever released.
"Niggas in Paris" is nominated for best rap performance. I suggest that Kanye and Jay-Z celebrate by performing it constantly between now and the ceremony. Or at least perform it at the ceremony during each and every commercial break.
Due to the Sept 30 cutoff for a release to be Grammy-eligible, the Weeknd will not be eligible until Next year. Which means that "Wicked Games" or "House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls" could win a Grammy about two full years after everyone on earth could have had them.

Here's the full list.

    *Notes:
    1. This was my entry into Ms. Bergman's music. Wanted to hear the original, and then really dug it tons. This is from Axel Wilner's first bunch of stuff as The Field.

    4. One of my fave songs from 2011 (well, it was on a 2011 album, and that's when I heard it, but I believe the video was out in 2010, maybe even before she signed). "Baby, don't you want me to bring you those drugs?"

    7. Remixed by Sufjan Stevens (no relation, former bandmate, album contributor), I believe. I usually skip it.

    T. I really need to get a copy of this fantastic reggae compilation, which I discovered because it's the only place (outside of original vinyl releases) where one can find the Tamlin's cover of Randy Newman's "Baltimore" (in the style of Nina Simone).

    B. Now that I'm re-listening due to the "re-issue", I'm digging this album more than I did at first. It's instrumentation is claustrophobic and paranoid like the best dubstep from Burial or Kode9. I was just looking for the pop hooks of House of Balloons.

  8.

  9. Thinking about the Grammys and the Weeknd more, I want "House of Balloons" nominated for Best song or Best R&B song or whatever for the 2013 Grammys (which will be awarded in 2014). That's a songwriter award, and Siouxsie and the Banshees get co-writer credit.

Also, I was wrong. If the Weeknd gets a House of Balloons Grammy nomination for 2013, it would be awarded nearly three years after the music was unofficially released.

        1. I'm 29 years old, and I like watching the Grammys with Linds. I don't even really know why it's entertaining, since we never agree with any of the awards and the performances are mostly awful. We look forward to it every year, though.

          1. Were you to young to have caught Rollins Band?
Denis Leary, in one of his old standup specials talked about how when he was young, he got to see JFK and Lee Harvey Oswald killed on live TV. From that point on in his life, he was afraid to turn it off. That's what Rollins Band at the Grammys is for me.
(I think it was Leary, it's been a while.)

              1. I missed it, but this is comment #125,000. The Twins sucking has depressed activity, but the Wolves are trying to compensate at least.

                1. Way to go AMR...I know it was midnight, but "There it is. Thx." is the best you can do for #125,000!?!

                    1. Oh - well then...
Way to go AMR brianS...I know it was midnight 4:38 pm, but "There it is. Thx." "Leary, apparently. But he doesn't claim that he personally saw those events on live TV." is the best you can do for #125,000!?!

Hmm, that isn't nearly as satisfying.

  10. 1. Sugarland – "Keep You" – Love on the Inside
    2. Original Broadway Cast – "Seasons of Love" – Rent
    3. Barenaked Ladies – "In the Car" – Stunt
    4. Barenaked Ladies – "Go Home" – Maroon
    5. Postal Service – "Recycled Air" – Give Up
    6. Marc Cohen – "Walking in Memphis" – College Mix CD
    7. Blueprint – "Feel Me" – Blueprint Who
    8. Guster – "All the Way Up to Heaven" – Lost and Gone Forever
    9. Dum Dum Girls – "Bedroom Eyes" – Only in Dreams
    10. Enya – "Book of Days" – Paint the Sky with Stars

NOTE: 10 was randomly selected, but I think it was my iPod telling a certain someone that Enya will still come up on Friday random music days.

  11. This list apparently brought to you by songs I can't believe are singles.

    1. "All You Need Is Love" - The Beatles - Single
    2. "Everybody Hurts" - R.E.M. - Automatic For The People
    3. "If You Leave" - Nada Surf - Single
    4. "The Rain, The Park, And Other Things" - The Cowsills - Single
    5. "Professional Distortion" - Miss Kittin - I Com
    6. "Hey Hey What Can I Do" - Led Zeppelin - Single
    7. "Authority Song" - John Cougar Mellencamp - Uh-Huh
    8. "Take Me To The Riot" - Stars - In Our Bedroom After The War
    9. "Run Into Flowers" - M83 - Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts
    10. "Loaded" - The Idle Hands - Single
Bonus: "P Control" - Prince - The Gold Experience

    2. Every time I hear this song now, I think of The Office, since they used it brilliantly in an early-season episode. Then I get over that and just enjoy the song.
    3. It was on a soundtrack for The O.C. but I don't count that kind of compilation as an album.
    4. I think some of Jeremy Messersmith sounds like this song.
    5. A hold-over from my days listening to Brian Oake's "Freedom Rock" which was how I learned about indie music before The Current came around. Solid song.
    6. Their only single ever, according to the last guy who edited the wikipedia page before I got there.
    9. Another "Freedom Rock" song. Also very good.
    10. Still one of my favorite local tracks ever.
    B. Yup.

    1. Their only single ever

If that means the only song that was released only as a single, never on an album, I think that could be true (even then, it was released as a B-side with Immigrant Song). Otherwise discogs lists a whole slew of other singles.

      1. Listen to his "Freedom Rock" show. It's a bit too patronizing, but it's otherwise really good. Especially for a major station.

        1. Not gonna happen. He has diarrhea of the mouth and will never, ever shut up about all the music he "discovered."

  12. I have just now decided I don't hate - heck, I even kind of like - Mumford & Son's "I Will Wait For You".

      1. doesn't that gif pretty much guarantee that ABC/4ltr will be using Mumford & Sons music on sports broadcasts for the next 25 years?

  13. So since this year has been such an excellent year for rap, I went to check out the Best Rap Albums list. Woof.

I love Rick Ross, but God Forgives, I Don't doesn't live up to its excellent title let alone Teflon Don. It's too bloated. He should've saved some more of the heat from the mixtapes he put out earlier in the year for the album. Based on a TRU Story is probably my favorite thing on the list. And only about half of that has held up for me on repeated listens. I think Tity Boi works best as a change of pace guest. One verse/album. In that context, he's better than just about anyone else out there.

I haven't listened to the others (I don't particularly like Drake, The Roots, or Lupe and I just haven't gotten around to Nas) but I can say with some degree of certainty that RAP Music by Killer Mike is a glaring omission. I'd go so far as to say it's a classic album. The production is absolutely bonkers, and Mike is, despite all the recent accolades, one of the most underrated and distinctive voices in hip hop today. I would probably put The Stoned Immaculate by Curren$y on the list too since it's fairly excellent. It's a pretty good overview of what he's been doing for the last several years, with slightly more expensive production & guest spots. It's an excellent album. I assume Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City will be nominated next year since I think it missed the cut off?

Obviously Drake is going to win this going away, but hey. At least this portion of the awards I can comment on. Still, I probably would've nominated Trap God by Gucci Mane if I had my say, so I'm not sure how valuable my opinion on this all is.

    1. I'm trying to think of the last year I was still into (and up on) rap. I think dubstep (the cool UK kind: Kode9 and the Bug) might have replaced it in my brain.

      1. I fell out of it for years, but in the last five or so I've really gotten back into it. Like to the point of not listening to much else. I feel way out of the loop in pretty much all the other types of music I listened to except for a handful of bands/record labels I still keep close tabs on.
