    1. I used to get "Dusty" and "Buffalo" mixed up. I would even hear Son of a Preacher Man and think, "Oh, man Janis was super talented." Kids...I tell you what.

      From the repository:

In November during the Memphis sessions Springfield suggested to Wexler (one of the heads of Atlantic Records) that he should sign the newly-formed UK band, Led Zeppelin. She knew their bass guitarist, John Paul Jones, from his session work on her earlier albums...Wexler [then] signed Led Zeppelin to a $200,000 deal with Atlantic.

well, that was a pretty rockin start to the morning.

    1. 'Flight of the Passing Fancy' - Squirrel Nut Zippers Hot

I thank God every day that I was too old to get into the "3rd wave" of ska (or was it the 4th wave?).

      1. they got lumped in with the swing movement that was bubbling up, but they were more hot jazz than swing

'Flight of the Passing Fancy' is an instrumental off Hot (their most popular album because of the song 'Hell')

    * Infinite Love Without Fulfillment - Grimes - Visions

    * No Pride - Green Day - Insomniac

** This obscure classical guitarist. You've probably never heard of him, he only released one or two super-rare CD-Rs.

I got Grouper - The Man Who Died in His Boat after I heard "Vital" a couple of times and kept coming back to it. That song reminds me of Chelsea Wolfe a little bit. After taking in the whole album, if Wolfe is "doom-folk", I guess this is "drone-folk"? I like it, although it might be a little more subdued than my usual tastes. Of course now I see that Kranky is the label that put it out (The label of Stars of the Lid, Winged Victory for the Sullen, Tim Hecker, etc.) and that makes a lot of sense.

I wonder what Maynard James Keenan has been up to? (video not obscene, but maybe not something to play at work)

    Well, there's that.

    1. Two thumbs up, one each for the rendition and video.

**must be obscure, couldn't find his stuff anywhere.

    *Notes:
    1. Jimi Hendrix Experience cover.
    2. There's a markéd similarity between the intro of this song and Pearl Jam's "Better Man". I don't think that it can be coincidence.
    4. Sounds like a bluegrassy-acoustic country with multi-part harmonies. I should learn what their studio recordings sound like.
    5-8. Well that's a varied mix.
    9. Brian from Ha Ha Tonka recommended this local group, who had toured with them. Their lead vox alienate me, like Kings of Leon strained to sounding like Glenn Danzig (at least how I remember Danzig).

  6. 1. Michael Franti & Spearhead - "Keep Me Lifted" - Chocolate Supa Highway
    2. Better Than Ezra - "Beautiful Mistake" - How Does Your Garden Grow
    3. P.O.S. - "Little Kicks" - Ipecac Neat

    9. Fitz & The Tantrums - "Pickin' Up The Pieces" - Pickin' Up The Pieces
    10. Blueprint - "Welcome Home" - Adventures in Counter Culture

    1. I kinda wish Madonna had continued her Like a.... series. Only two songs? The possibilities were endless. At least she could have done Like an Actress.

    1. I saw Megadeth in concert Spring of 1986 in Washington, D.C. It was a great show but unbeknownst to me a women I kinda worked with (and who I was starting to lay the groundwork in pursuing) also worked at the bar where Megadeth was playing. We bumped into each other at the show and she was very distraught with the audience she had to serve. Unfortunately, she associated me with all the longhairs and headbangers and I basically lost any opportunity to hook up.

        1. I know! Although in 1986 I had significantly more hair than I do now, it was by no way the definition of the word long.

*I won’t deny it - I still like this song.
**I actually kind of enjoyed this one. Apparently Gosling sings and plays music too. I find myself generally dismissing those actors who also do music (Depp, Leto, Costner, Crowe, etc.) and vice versa (Jagger, White, Bowie, Common…list goes on). How about you guys? Do you give either group a chance in a new medium?

    1. I dunno. Bowie did a pretty good turn as The Man Who Fell To Earth.

And Sting played a pretty good Sting in David Lynch's version of Dune.

      1. also, Frank is great in The Manchurian Candidate, Deano had a lot of entertaining roles (I love the Matt Helm movies; I liked him in Katie Elder and, of course, he had a long run with Jerry Lewis), etc., etc. Lots of singers with some acting successes.

Going the other way, I think Travolta was better known as a pop star (albeit a one-hit wonder) than actor at the start of his career as Vinny Barbarino.

        1. My recollection is that Travolta was already known as Vinny Barbarino, and that's what led to his one hit, rather than the other way around. It was a long time ago, though, so I could be wrong.

          1. Is he an actor turned singer, or a singer turned actor? I can't decide. But as Our Greatest Living Thespian, he stands apart.

              1. some would say that his whole career has been an act.* Eh, Bootsy?

*that said, he's a longtime favorite of mrsS, so I'm treading lightly. And I like a lot of his stuff.

        2. I guess I hadn't thought of the Rat Pack - good point there. Also, I guess it's pretty hard to ignore Streisand's success: 2 Oscars, 8 Grammys, 5 Emmys...

          1. yea, the first miniseries is really good, despite less-than-awesome sets and special effects. And, most importantly, none of those stupid weirding modules. Those things offended me in the film, beautiful as so much of it is.

    2. Will Oldham started out as an actor, and actually appears to approach his music as playing the character Bonnie "Prince" Billy. I've only caught him in his bit role as a freakish hobo guy in Wendy & Lisa.

  11. continuing the alt-j discussion from earlier, i'm still not sold on it, and i pinpointed one annoying aspect: the vocals. they mostly sounds like someone doing a bad adam sandler impression of adam sandler doing that one annoying, childish voice that he does.

    1. I came across an acoustic clip of some band from Iceland with both male and female singers. The clip I caught was with the female singer (who's definitely the under-bill). She had a real odd diction and I thought "what if alt-j was an accent?", then this band would be Mumford & Sons with a female singing with a heavy alt-j accent.

I looked for better clips but it was mostly the dude singer (in which case they sound more just like M&S) and never got back to it.
