  1. Rochester and Pawtucket played to a ten-inning, 3-3 tie yesterday. Virgil Vasquez started and pitched 3.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits. Andrew Albers, Mike O'Connor, and Bruce Pugh combined for five shutout innings. Nate Hanson was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

  2. It's a Wednesday morning concert presale code day! How does Alice Cooper at the State Theater July 14 and 15 sound?

The presale starts at 10:00a today! Code is: TRUSTROCK

Available at Ticketmaster or the State Theater Box Office.

    1. I'll be using the Dawes presale later this week. Anyone else planning to go?

      1. I'd love to, but weekday shows are a challenge, especially with Sigur Ros* the following evening.

*nibbish, is this thing happening? I didn't pick up tickets as we never confirmed re: GA floor or balcony (reserved or GA)...if you did, what did you go with?

        1. I haven't picked anything up yet. I wasn't sure which I preferred myself. We should probably just make a choice and go with it.

        2. The Dawes show is in July (I can't remember the date, nor can I seem to find the presale stuff in my email anymore).

          1. Ahh, that makes more sense. They're at Electric Fetus on April 2...that's what I thought you were referring to.

nibs - I haven't convinced my wife to go so I may just get a sitter and the tickets and surprise her. Money is tight right now so cheaper is better.

              1. In that case, if you find the presale info you should share it. We saw them on New Year's eve 2011 at the Varsity and had a really good time.

                1. Ah, here we go. Wednesday July 10 at 7:30. $20/ticket. Presale on Friday at noon with password: stories.

Edited to add: I saw the free show they played last year the State Fair. Very fun.

          2. Did anybody see that the Alabama Shakes are playing in the Cabooze parking lot this summer?

  3. Spent quite a bit of extra time at Chicago Midway and didn't get home until midnight, but I did get to hear an airplane restroom's smoke detector :/

  4. Culled from the 4ltr to describe Denver's 13 game win streak:

The Nuggets' streak sits at 13 after an impressive win in OKC. How afraid should the West elite be?

Ahem. Denver is part of the elite.

    1. That's kind of like when Mike Celizic came out and said "When the Yankees are not great, there can be no great teams." Opinions about franchises and their strengths are so ingrained in their heads that these idiots can't get around the idea of a bad team getting good.

    2. not to listen to ANY of the game commentators or the studio dudes. They lack a "go-to" guy during crunch time -- a superstar. To be elite, you must have at least one, if not two, superstars. Hence, not elite. QED.

One is reminded of Portland circa 1977 and Seattle circa 1978-79. But I guess that buttresses the point.

      1. I don't know how they will do in the post season, but I've seen them play a few times this year. They are one of the most exciting teams I have ever seen.

        1. no doubt. And I absolutely love listening to jon barry get all giddy about how they score 148 percent of their baskets from inside the paint, and how delirious jeff van gundy gets every time Jevale McGee comes on the floor.

  5. What's with all these night spring training games that are on TV? What's the point of them being at night then?

    1. better local ticket sales?
put them on at night so the local RSN's can get people to watch and sell ads?
maybe some teams want to put the players in a night then noon start the next day situation?

    2. The point of them being at night are so that the players can get back into the swing of playing night games, which much of the regular season they are. /non-cash grab

      1. Ah, but getting the players into the swing of playing night games is supposed to help them win more games, which management needs because more wins = more money. Cash grab!

    1. The gym at my Dad's HS is 7,000+, roughly the same size as the gym at Drake. At one point, it was the second largest basketball venue in the state of Indiana after Hinkle Fieldhouse at Butler.

    2. Not fair because the 4ltr expects to lose viewership without UK advancing in the NIT. QED.

    1. Huh. Interesting choice for the article. I'd think if you wanted insight you'd go with the Trix Rabbit.

      1. Well the Deadstring Brothers would have been the absolute wrong choice.

    1. Watching Jeter excel is not only great or Yankee fans but good for baseball in general.

      Oh mama.

      1. Given the amount of mouth service already given to Mariano Rivera before his victory lap of a final season, I'm going to strongly considering avoiding baseball in Jeter's final year. I expect it to be a non-stop ballwashing.

        1. I expect it to be a non-stop ballwashing.

I've heard ESPN on-air "talent" and NYC sportwriters are already fighting over who gets to give Jeets fellatio before every game during his victory lap season (price is double for playoff games, you don't even want to know what they're willing to do if Yanks in World Series that year).

      2. Proof of his greatness:

As a Red Sox fan, I hope he rebounds. Baseball is better with Derek Jeter.

      3. I could watch the Captain work on spreadsheets all day long and never get tired of it.

        1. Gahhh, I hate it. He still uses a lot of Lotus 1-2-3 commands and doesn't use much of the updated functionality.
          Array functions, Jetes, array formulas!
Plus, he hasn't turned off "GETPIVOTDATA" which just drives me bonkers.
I'll be happy when he retires and I'm not forced to watch him stumble across his computer screen trying to figure things out anymore.

    2. this sounds odd, but I dislike Jeter, but at the same time have respect for him. ESPN and other outlets praise him up to be Godlike, and thats annoying. He always seems to get a clutch hit against the Twins and that is frustrating, and he plays for the Yankees, and I cant fully embrace a Pinstriper.
But he is one of the all time great players. He had 216 hits last year and he is 38 years old! He also seems like a guy who likes to play baseball even though he has a nice fat contract.

      1. I largely agree. If he was the same player for the Royals, where he'd get 1% of the media attention, I'm sure I'd have a more positive attitude towards him. He's a pretty obvious HOFer to me, but as HOFers go, I don't think he's particularly special. For instance, Jeter has 69.3 rWAR and Larkin has 67.1 rWAR. None of the WAR stats are perfect, but that comparison doesn't really bother me. (Whereas Yankees fans would probably froth at the mouth over such a suggestion.)

Amusingly, I see that Jeter has never won an MVP award, and has only been top-5 in the MVP vote 3 times. Those seem like exactly the sort of things that would be held against him if he was a Royal instead of a Yankee.

      1. If the inside of that trombone is anything like the inside of my trumpet, I wouldn't want to be the first guy taking a shot. Ultimately, I suppose I wouldn't want to be any of the guys taking a shot.

          1. Also a (former) trumpeter who was disgusted by what I found whenever I used my snake.

            1. Also a former trumpeter. I never cleaned my trumpet, I just passed it down to my brother.

              1. Seriously, we all have a lot in common. (also a former trumpeter, but I did clean my horn from time to time. no, that's not a euphemism)

        1. As the proud owner of a biology degree and with a working knowledge of high-proof alcohol, I'd say the second shot should be pretty safe- after the first shot clears the bore and disinfects the workings, so to speak.

(I also played trumpet, and I also would not drink anything that came out of said instrument)

      2. I see some process of elimination in the comments suggest this guy is probably from Wisconsin, which makes the whole "Everclear-from-a-trombone" thing make sense.

        1. Everclear from a trombone? I wonder which song it was. I'm guessing "Father of Mine" but they all sound the same.

          1. Oh, well done- I missed it on the first read on the sidebar, glad that it clicked when I saw it in context.

  6. Tonight's lineup:

    1. Aaron Hicks, CF
    2. Brian Dozier, 2B
    3. Joe Mauer, C
    4. Josh Willingham, LF
    5. Justin Morneau, 1B
    6. Ryan Doumit, DH
    7. Chris Parmelee, RF
    8. Jamey Carroll, 3B
    9. Pedro Florimon, SS

If Plouffe can't get ready in time, this probably the Opening Day lineup vs. Verlander.

    1. Well either way its probably 8/9 of the lineup barring injury. Seems like they might slow play Plouffe anyway.

    1. Setoguchi is on some sort of awesome hotstreak right now. 13 points in the last 11 games.

      1. You know who else has turned it on? Bouchard, that's who. That game was so ugly through 30 minutes, I couldn't figure out how they were up by 2 goals! Nice win.

        1. it helped that a Det goal was disallowed because the refs said it was played with a high stick, even though replays showed it was off of Heatley's hand

          1. Considering how poorly they started (tonight and this season), I'll take a win against the Red Wings any way I can get it.

          2. Saw a closer replay that showed it tip off of the high stick before hitting the hand.

  7. The Heat are spotting Cleveland 19 right now. This is going to really break the Cavs when Miami comes back.

      1. Bill Simmons poses teh question: if the Cavs win, are the fans allowed to storm the court NCAA style?

          1. Tej Sahota ‏@boatical 1m
@bruce_arthur kid was wearing a shirt that said COME BACK, WE MISS YOU. LeBron gave him a low 5 as he was being dragged away by security

  8. If the Heat can cut it to 10 by the 4th they are still in this.

        1. If you think I didn't put down on the Heat +750 at half time tonight you don't know me.

  9. From the twitter:

    Seth Rosenthal ‏@seth_rosenthal 3m
Y'all actually watching Cavs-Heat are missing out on Walt Frazier chuckling every time Mike Breen gives him a score update.

    1. David Aldridge ‏@daldridgetnt 2m
I am reminded Cleveland actually led by 27 in the third, 67-40. Since then, Heat on a 48-14 run. That's just incredible.

  10. The Cavs broadcast is showing the stat breakdown between Wayne Ellington and D-Wade right now.

    1. Those who sit close enough to get on the court usually can't afford to pay for the beer needed to get that drunk.
