  1. Ya know, I can take an opening day loss at the hands of Verlander. Much better than the thrashing we got from the Orioles last year.

  2. in Financial Aid application news, FAFSA is about ten billion times easier to complete than is the College Board's Profile Online.

  3. Worley gave the Twins a quality start (just barely) in the first game of the season. Last year, the Twins didn't get a quality start until Game 9. Who started that game?

    1. Hendriks? I remember him losing his first start post-food poisoning allowing just a homer or two.

      1. Very good. He allowed just 1 run to the Rangers. The Twins lost, of course, since he didn't get a win until late in the season.

      1. SWA from now on. At least their websites are much less misleading, and their customer service actually provides a service. I haven't flown anyone but SWA the past 10 years, and now I remember why.

        1. Yea. Pretty much every non-SWA experience I've had in the past decade has been...questionable.

          1. Delta used to claim that they love to fly... and it shows. I can't imagine if they hated to fly.

                1. I'm not a small dude, I'm also not morbidly obese, but I swear that united has made their seats more narrow some how.

                  1. I've probably flown about thirty times but have never had a bad experience, outside of a "connecting flight" where the second flight took off ten minutes early for some reason, leaving my wife and I behind. I keep waiting for the law of averages to catch up and lay a huge beatdown on me, but so far, so good.

  4. O.k. Now that the Twins season has started, it's been 22 years since their last World Series appearance, which is exactly how long it took between their 1st and 2nd appearance.

  5. So there are people going to concerts around the Cities tomorrow night, right? Are we going to be able to get some kind of mini-caucus going beforehand?

    1. I've got tix for Joy Formidable (as does Pirate and Sheenie right?) Where should we caucus?

      1. I'll chat with Sheenie tonight about our pre-show plans. Anywhere semi-near First Ave should be fine.

        1. Follow-up: looks like doors open at 7 and the show starts at 8 (with two openers), so they probably won't take the stage until 930-10ish. We're very flexible on meeting up ahead of time (even outside of downtown if it means we get to see CoC). I'm delegating responsibility on making a decision to the rest of you.

          1. I'm flexible on where and when, too. I don't know what the details are on CoC's show (other than I think it's in St. Paul) so I can do whatever if it works out for us all to get together.

                1. What time you thinking about getting to the show? You think ~7 works for meeting at the bar, or should it be earlier?

                  1. I'd probably be there later than 7:00p. What time would you be heading into the Ave?

                    1. Same here, but I should make it. Pirate - I'll shoot you a text if I can't.

                    2. Sounds good, CoC. free, I'm not sure when we would head over, but I would bet not until at least 8ish when the music starts. Maybe even stay a little later than that.

                    3. Sounds good, I'll see you guys then. I think Pirate's about right on when we'd head over.

                    4. Heads up: the ballgame starts at 3 today. Means that the neighborhood (and it's bars/restaurants) is likely going to be pretty busy when we're looking to meet.

      2. nibbish and I are still working out the details for catching Sigur Rós - neither his spouse nor mine jumped at the chance to attend and it's a long trip for a Wednesday night show (my words, not his). That being said, a mini-caucus wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility.

        1. About that...

My car made up my mind for me today by exhibiting some intermittent electrical issues. I'm not trusting it to take me to the cities tomorrow, so instead, I'm going to sit and listen to Sigur Rós records and be irritated.

  6. I see we've got some cool new banners. Or at least one.
With a cream jersey in front of a garage door. Is that Hoey?
Seems like the banners page could use updating.

  7. Did the Double Dam Rumble on Sunday.

On the way back, we were starved, and pulled over to a Panera restaurant in Canton, CT.

I ordered a smoothie and a small serving of Rustic Penne Bolognese (meme pasta - 8 clams!). While we waited for the food, I inhaled the smoothie, which was good.

They called our name for the food - NBBW went over to pick it up, and checked the contents of the bag. The pasta dish was about 1/2 cup of pasta in a smallish container.

NBBW: Is this really it? $8 for this? Are you kidding me?

Panera Guy: Yeah, that's the size of the small pasta dish.

NBBW: You gotta be kidding me.

Panera Guy: Umm, yeah they recently raised their prices. (Nice toss to Corp. there)

NBBW: You gotta be kidding me.

PG: Umm /*senses a NCBS (nuclear customer blowout situation)*/, no problem - we can fix that - let me add some more pasta.

And, it wasn't that good - 2/14 on NBB rating scale.

    1. The one time I ate at a Panera, in Grand Island, NE, I wasn't impressed. Food was okay, but it was expensive.
I wouldn't mind hanging out there and drinking coffee while I used their wifi, though.

      1. Their peasant/country bread is good, but their pasta adventure seems to be a disaster.

        1. Yeah, I guess I've had their bagels and bakery items before when someone brought them to the office, and those are pretty good. Just seems like they get a little out of their comfort zone when they start making meals, I guess.

          1. We recently discovered Goldberg's Bagels in West Hartford. Great bagels, and environ, but horrible coffee.

    2. (Nice toss to Corp. there)

Well, I'm not sure why you'd expect him to say "we." It isn't likely that the store had anything to do with the raised prices, and it's even less likely that he did.

      1. True. But he is the face of the franchise to us. Who else would carry the flag on whatever they are trying to do?

        1. From there, I guess I have to say I don't equate people with their jobs, as far as food service and retail go. If he was a manager or even a supervisor, I'd expect him to take ownership, but a line-level employee...I don't know.

      2. This is why passive voice exists, and it's one of the rare occasions when I'd actually condone using it. "The prices were recently raised."

      1. Agreed. Or the Miller Park one, where's essentially a photo of the roof. Ditto for the Trop, but it's the Trop. The picture of US Cellular is also pretty bad; there's very little to identify the park. If not for the Elvis, Dodger Stadium might be the best photo. I'm a sucker for wide-angle shots like that, but the sea of blue and white in the packed stands is great.

    1. TIL: El Presidente is the Astros' bullpen coach.

Two quick outs to start off the ninth. He might finish below 115, which isn't too crazy for the first start of a season.

        1. I wouldn't call it a solid single either though. I missed if Andrus got close to fielding it, but thought he did.
