2013 Game 10: Mets at Winter Wonderland

NWS predicts 35 degrees and dropping temperatures tonight. The Twins might be able to break the coldest game record two weeks into the season. They also predict the precipitation potential as holding at around 50% through the night, so this may be one of the few (only?) games where it actively snows.

Except for the freezing temperatures part compounded by lack of sun, some slight flurries might be preferable to rain. I am sure the players will take solace in that.

Jon "I'm from Ohio and snow is no big deal" Niese
vs
Vance "Sacramento doesn't get snow" Worley

  1. Ah, forget this. I'm gonna go try to see Jurassic Park in 3D.

//only movie time is at 9:40? [redacted].

  2. Steve Rushin ‏@SteveRushin

Twins down 5-0 after one third of inning + free coffee at Target Field could mean caffeinated version of Ten Cent Beer Night in Cleveland.

  3. Mets announcer: "How cold does it have to be before you cancel the game? Below freezing? Below 30?"

            1. Maybe the game started at 71 and got cold fast? There are a few that have temps listed in the low 80s with snow.

        1. Looking through the cold games, according to Retrosheet, and some of them also don't make sense. Looking at the plausible games, I think upper 20s degrees is the limit, and that's rare.

    1. I'd let the home team bat first. I'm thinking neither pitcher will be particularly sharp.

        1. LOP was a great read - and good watch - I killed several hours on my return flight from Argentina with it.

      1. NBBW opines pity for the Points-South players who have to deal with this (D.R., P.R., Venez., etc.)

  4. I think Punto was having flashbacks of getting socked by FOTF when he was standing behind Kemp's tirade.

  5. with Drew Butera not on the roster, who will pitch the 9th inning of this blowout?

  6. So Correia is pitching like we thought Worley might, and Worley is pitching like Gleeman thought Correia might. Interesting.

      1. Worley's career numbers: 3.59 ERA, 3.54 FIP, 3.83 xFIP. He'll be fine, assuming good health (which is assuming a lot given the way things have gone the last couple years).

  7. The Buffalo Buffaloes could not have, in its wildest dreams, imagined the kind of season John Buck is having this season.

      1. That ball must have stung when it got out there. Being cold and all. Also and it was a rocket.

      1. I would if I could, but Comcast once again is not showing the FSN+ channel for the 2nd time this week, and the other day they cut the Wolves game off at 11pm.

        1. Watching the Jazz feed on League Pass. Do I root for the Wolves because it is the right thing to do or do root for the Jazz as it is essentially rooting against the Lakers?

  8. John Buck has an interesting trade history. Parts of trade including Carlos Beltran, Mark Buerhle, and RA Dickey

  9. with his walk earlier this game, Aaron Hick now has more walks (3) than hits (2)

  10. Nephew just signed up with National Guard. Proud of him, but also watching CNN posts on DPRK.

  11. FSN running a Twitter poll: who was the better pitcher the Twins got in the Viola trade: Aggy or Tapani

not a fair question because Aggy's beard is worth like 25 percentage points.

  12. So the Mrs. and I were thinking of going to this game but given the weather we decided against it. We did decide to have a nice evening at home watching the game with popcorn, beer, candy etc. Thank God we stayed home, but still not as nice an evening as he had hoped.

    1. I don't know who this refers to. My pick for best pickup of the offseason is Jamie Hersch.

...wait, I think you're saying the same thing here.

  13. Mets broadcast doing a poll for how many games Quentin should be suspended.

4th option: same number of weeks that Greinke is out.

    Mine: break Quentin's collarbone.

    1. My problem with same number of weeks that Greinke is out is that 1) Greinke put his shoulder in a bad spot and is at least in small part to blame. He didn't have to taken on Quentin. He wouldn't be the first pitcher to chuck his glove at the batter and hope his 1B gets there quickly (Of course that's easy to say from behind a keyboard, I know. But I also know from experience that you can actually think quite a bit in a small time frame about how, or even if, to respond to someone bearing down on you like that) and 2) I think you punish the action, not the result. Charging the mound should have a standard ban (10 games or whatever [unless the batter takes his bat with him, then it's obviously more serious).

It's unfortunate that Greinke got hurt, but I don't think that you punish a batter depending on the injury to the pitcher.

          1. Im surprised Quentin didnt get injured too. 131 is his highest games played season.

  14. Twins hit a hard fly ball and it falls into the OF glove. Mets hit a hard fly ball and it ends up in the second deck.

  15. The Yankees just turned one of the weirdest triple plays in the history of baseball.

  16. It looked like the refs should have at least considered a flagrant on that and-one for Rubio. It wasn't a hard push, but shoving a dude in the back while he's in the air is extremely dangerous.

    1. to be fair, Morneau crushed that ball and it hit the very top of the right field power alley wall

  17. just saw a replay of that Yankee triple play. crazy! and Alexi Casilla was involved

    1. That's what I was thinking. Actually I'm over 50 and he looks a lot older than me. Also where are Topeka and Santa Fe.

  18. Did they finally stop deciding to call that stupid "transferring the ball" rule? Or is this ump just a poopy face?

  19. Bert: Twins have a lot of long relievers in their bullpen.

    We call them groundskeepers, Bert.

    1. Is it possible to cite errors to suggest a player is not good and mock errors as a useless stat? Seems inconsistent.

      1. OK, how about he has a career -12.7 UZR/150. But at least he has the best K/BB rate on the team. I'm sure he'll keep that up.

  20. So the wife asks, "is this what's going to be like the whole season?" I said, Yeah, the pitching is really bad. She then asks "why, why can't we get good pitchers?" To be frank, I didn't have a good answer.

    1. Mrs. Buffalo just said "14 is a lot of runs to score in a baseball game".

  21. You could see that hanger and anticipate Mauer lacing it for a hit even before he did it.

  22. I reallllllly wish I could watch the Wolves game on FSN+ like promised because judging by twitter its a real slobberknocker

    1. At one point or another, they've tried to murder each and every one of our point guards.

  23. This may be Hicks' first game to not record a strikeout. One more plate appearance guaranteed to keep the streak going.

  24. with 2 hits tonight Joe Mauer is now at batting .302
also, Vance Worley's WHIP now stand at 2.42

  25. Hicks has two hits and has three runs scored and three RBIs. So, he might be hitting.051, but it's an impactful .051.

  26. That weather was fit for neither men nor Vanimals. They really shouldn't count a game played in those conditions, but I guess they're going to. So, we'll just have to settle for 156-6!
