April 28, 2013: No Meltdown

The Wild were playing a far inferior team on the last day of the season with several ways to get into the playoffs, and yet somehow, they did in fact make the playoffs. As a Minnesotan, I'm a little stunned.

  1. Wild Playoff Chase

    They're in!

The Wild got no help from Detroit or Columbus, but they ground out a 2-1 victory against the Avalanche to secure the 8 seed in the playoffs and an opening round series against the best team in the NHL, the Chicago Blackhawks.

No one is going to favor the Wild in this one (one of my non-WGOM friends texted me "Is it possible Chicago wins this series in 3 games?"), but I think the distinction of going from being a non-playoff team to a playoff-caliber team is an important one for Minnesota. Even if they get swept, the first playoff appearance in 5 years is an accomplishment, and hopefully something to build on.

    Round 1

    1. Chicago v. 8. Minnesota
    2. Anaheim v. 7. Detroit
    3. Vancouver v. 6. San Jose
    4. St. Louis v. 5. Los Angeles

    1. Pittsburgh v. 8. Ottawa/New York Islanders
    2. Montreal/Boston v. 7. Ottawa/New York Islanders
    3. Washington v. 6. New York Rangers
    4. Montreal/Boston v. 5. Toronto

Boston plays Ottawa tonight in the season finale.

If Ottawa gets 2 points - (2. Montreal, 4. Boston, 7. Ottawa, 8. New York Islanders)
If Ottawa gets 1 point - (2. Boston, 4. Montreal, 7. Ottawa, 8. New York Islanders)
If Ottawa gets 0 points - (2. Boston, 4. Montreal, 7. New York Islanders, 8. Ottawa)

    1. I know you're trying to keep our Blackhawk fans off guard, but it was a dominating 3-1 victory!

    2. I've read every post here about the Wild with a tiny sad trombone playing in my head. I don't care who they play.

    3. Schedule for the series.

      Game 2 - Friday, 8:30 PM @ Chicago
Game 3 - Sunday, 2 PM @ Minnesota (on NBC)
      Game 4 - Tuesday, 8:30 PM @ Minnesota
      Game 5 - Thursday @ Chicago
      Game 6 - Saturday @ Minnesota
      Game 7 - Sunday @ Chicago

  2. i just mentioned this on FB, but i uploaded a video of the boy to youtube (since all the families are elsewhere a lot of crap gets thrown into the cloud for their consumption), and there was a warning that the video might not be able to be viewed in all countries. we has some music playing on the stereo, and apparently youtube picked up on the specific thelonious monk song that was playing in the background and there are potential licensing issues. i'm not sure what to think about that.

      1. speaking of ads, boy, my mobile version of the Bookface suddenly has a lot of ads in it. Seems like every third post is a commercial.

        1. You knew it would go there - and I would imagine sometime in the future you will be PayPalling to Post to your Pals.

Oh, and I ended the day there with this mad-dash:
Billy Joel for four songs, Charles Bradley for three songs, Andrew Bird for three songs, Jill Scott for one song, and Ben Harper/Charlie Musselwhite for five songs.

Lastly, dinner was at Boucherie. OMFG is about the best way to describe it.

  4. Is private school worth it? Just ask this girl who couldn't get in to Brown. Boo hoo. So she went to NYU instead.

"Not getting into Brown was the best thing that's ever happened to me," said Assaf, a vice president of sales at S.W. Basics of Brooklyn who ultimately ended up studying at NYU and has been accepted to the Harvard Business School.

The private school environment, according to Assaf, too often tended to engender in her and her classmates "an entitlement mentality."

hahahaha! [ok, the story is actually about her $28k/year high school, but it is perhaps the dumbest thing I will read all week]

    1. nibs looks like he's had a few, too, but then, he always does, what with the giddy smile.

What do you use for chess, again? I downloaded three chess apps but I don't know where to find you.

Also, forgot to mention WBC caps from the last two days. Here's yesterday and today's WBC totals:

I think the only teams I didn't see the whole weekend were the Rockies and DBacks.

Oh, and for t-shirt jerseys, the only ones I can remember seeing were a green Petunia Red Sox, a "Nomah" Red Sox, and a Clayton Kershaw. Someone today was rocking a Tony Perez throwback that was spectacular but also about to get incredibly muddy.
